—A correspondent of the Savannah
. News says: Abuse the Central Rail
road as much as people may, it never
will sell an emigrant ticket at reduced
rates. To all emigrants seeking
homes In Georgia, it offers cheap
transportation, but to emigrants leav
ing her genial climate and fruitful
soil It says to one and all, “full fare,
aud we wish we could increase it four
fold to restrain your wandering feet.”
—The Augusta Chronicle of the 22d
inst., says the deficiency In the cot
ton crop leaves the average farmer in
a bad way. Many of them have been
unable to square up this year’s ac
counts, aud many flue managers, who
have always worked independently
of their factors and grocery merchants
at least until July, are even now try
ing to arrange for supplies for the
coming season. This seems to be the
case generally in counties contiguous
to Richmond and the counties trad
ing mainly with Augusta.
—On the 5tli of January, 1878, tlie
Savannah Weekly News will appear
enlarged and in addition to the politi
cal and literary features it will have
a military-department, which will be
devoted to the interests of tlie citizen
soldiery of Georgia. Tlie issue of the
5th will contain a complete roster of
the Georgia State Troops, and each
succeeding issue will contain tlie his
tory of one or more of tlie various
companies. Lieutenant "Addison F.
Barnett, Adjutant of the Atlanta Bat
talion, will have charge of this de
partment, and being a son of the Sec
retary of State and a clerk in the De
partment, he will be able to give
prompt and reliable information.
—The statement for the eleven
months ending December 1st shows
that there has been a saving in the
city’s expenses of Augusta of $32,564
46, as compared with last year, and
the saving for tlie entire year wiU
show a saving of about $38,000. The
receipts have largely increased. The
difference inoueitemalone—business
licenses—shows a difference of $13,000,
the rioelpts last year being $17,000
and this year $30,000. The item of
incidental expenses lust year was
$2,200; this year $050—a difference of
$1,650. Taking it altogether, the
showing for tlie eleven months is an
excellent one for Augusta. Mayor
Meyer says that if he has the full co
operation of Council, the showing for
the next year, he is satisfied, will be
much better even than this. All of
the new Issue of city bonds disposed
of so far have been sold at par.
—Lawrence ville Herald: W. A.

newspaper war on Gen. Gordon be
cause he was defeated for the Mur-
sbalsbip. He does not seem disposed
to attack tlie other nieililx-rs who
signed the protest against his appoint
ment, and who, we presume, were
younlly responsible lor liis defeat.
Perhaps Mr. Huff belongs to that
combination, said to have been
formed last winter to beat Gordon tor

—The official cotton statement for
Selma for.the week ending tlie 21st
inst., shows the receipts for the week
u
were 0,092 bales, against 3,609 bales
same week,last season. The receipts
to date are 02,709 hales, against 59,810
bales, to the same date last year.
From this it will be seen that we
nave left last year’s receipts In the
lurch, and prospects are now that we
will close tills year twenty thousand
bales ahead of last year. The cotton
receipts for tlie past three weeks have
' >U '
simply been enormous.
