H., special to the Hart ford Times says: I have just visited a remnrknhlt past ire. ten mile's from this city, in 1 in* town of Epson, close hv the track of tin Suncoek Valley rajlroad, whieh is "perilledJ*y tin Concord railroad and runs \\ il hin 700 feet of tin* pasture houmlary. The pasture nm- tains ;d*om forty acres, and is covered with a fair growth of arnsn. The original growth was jiiin*. It is situated on a hill side. tfent- lv sloping towards the south w hert th»* railroad crosses the loot of the hill. It is owned hy a respectable fanner, and some years ago! after he hud be^un to pas ture it. he noticed that when tin' cattle came up to tlie stables, in a rainy or muddy time, their feet would look as if painted or discolored, and it would be many flays be fore it would disappear In the wartime a young man dug: up some of the earth in this |msture, mixed «»ii with it, and puint< d a barn in the neighborhood; and it looks as well to-day as when first painted. I never saw a building look better Unit had been painted that length of time. It stands within forty rods of the . -pasture, or. as it may be called, tic mine. ■ The imint is of a ruddy-brow nish yellow, a <1 Is judged to be lire proof, as it is largely composed of oxide of iron. Hunting it a 1 little makes it darker, and more burning makes it a beautiful dark red. That whieh was put on this barn was not prepared in anv way. no grinding or washing was re quired; it was simply run through a com mon sieve to get nut the grass roots: there is no grit in it to overcome, and it is only required to be sifted for the purpose men- J tinned. The deposit begins at the very grass roots, and runs down to tin* depth <»f fifteen or eighteen feet, making the supply Well nigh inexhaustible. No grinding, blasting or splitting is re quired to get it. It simply lias to In dug out, mixed with oil, and is all ready for ( use without any work whatever, though ! that near the surface would be better sifted to get out twigs, roots, etc. Different shades of it can be easily produced by sub- j jeeting it t<> different degrees of heat lie- fore it is mixed with oil. It is damp when first dug, before the air reaches it, but it is ( ntirelv free from rocks, stones or grit. A brook runs through the pasture, and get ting my boots first w et in this and then getting this earth paint on them, I found ft extremely difficult to get off' except by ilie most vigorous scraping. John Briggs, a paint manufacturer in Boston, was given a sample of this paint, which lie used and pronounced it as good as the best imported Italian sienna, j was told that this grade of ochre or earth paint has a large consumption in this country, 1 not only for painting buildings, but for car roofs and in the manufacture of oil cloths and other fabrics, wood pulp, and manilla and other colored wrapping paper. It con tains a large amount or oxide of iron, like all earth paints. A chemical analysis, made by John Hol liday, chemist and assayer, of Boston, showed it to contain 7<J per cent, of iron oxide and 18 per cent, of silica, the rest being vegetable matter, moisture, etc. Where the samples for test were taken the ground lies quite level at an ele vation of some seventy feet above the Suncook river. To the north and east the* hills rise seve ral hundred feet, with immense outcroppings of rock, the formation being principally trap, granite, mica, schist and slate inter mixed with quartz—some of the rocks being heavily iron-stained. The samples for test were taken close to the grass roots, but then- was no appre ciable difference between that and samples taken from a d« pth of twelve or fifteen fieet. On line occasion some Boston friends sent Webster as a present an enormous sized plow to use on his place. Webster gave out word that on a certain day it would be christened. Tim day arrived, and the surrounding farmers for miles came in to witness the event. A dozen teams with aristocratic occupants came from Boston. It was exlmeted by every one that Webster would make a great speech on the aecasion, reviewing the his tory of farming back to the time when CincinnaUis abdicated tin most mighty throne in the world to cultivate turnips and cabbages in his Homan garden. The plow was brought oifi and ten yokes of sj ile iid Id oxen hitched in front. More than two hundred people stood around on the tiptoe of expectation. Soon Webster made his appearance. He had been calling spirits from the vasty deep, and his gate was somewhat uncertain. Seizing the plow handles and spreading his feet he yelled out to the driver in his deep bass voice: ‘‘Are you all ready, Mr. Wright? ’ “All ready, Mr. \\\*bster." was the reply, meaning of course for ids speech. Webster straightened himself up by a mighty effort and shouted : “Then let her rip ." The whole crowd roared with laughter, while Webster with his big plow proceeded to rip up the soil.
