Chicago, May i’ll.—A disastrous lire oc curred in n large brick and stone structure nt the corner of Congress street mid Wa bash avenue eavlv this morning. The loss i will approximate .OOO.rsQO. Among the principal losers are publishers Bel ford, (.'lark ,t Co. and the large book bindery firm of Donahue & He.'int berry, The structure in which the fire originated is at 1 the northwest corner of tic- two thorough fares and six stories in height. The first alarm was turned in shortly before 5 o'clock, but before the arrival of any fire steamers the flames burst out of the building with such fierceness as to insure the destruction of the entire building and contents. In a short time after the Mare was discovered the building was; on fire from lop to bot tom. It was filled with material of the most Inflammable description. The occu pants were Beltord, Clark & Co., publish- err: Van Antwerp Bragg & Co., in the same business: Itonuohue & Henucherrv, hook hinders: R. II. Beale A Co., litho graphers. and the C'< ntrnl I.ithogrnping Co. Beltord. of Be)ford Clarke J: Co., places his les; at s.Vi'0,000, many valuable plates being destroyed. Next door was a five story building own ed by A. A. Slaughter, and occupied by the furniture film, of R. Iieimel & Co. This firm was burned out a short time ago. and was just going back, and had only a small stock on band. Their loss will not exc- d •J50C0. The most exciting part of the tire was a panic which occurred among the guests of the Hotel Brunswick, directly opposite the burned block. The heat was so intense every pane of glass ii the Wabash avenue, front of the hotel was broken, and the sashes and window frames scorched. The guests became alarm ed and without stopping to dress themselves, fled from the hotel. The loss by heat and water to the hotel is $50,000. Capt. Joe Keution. truck No. 21. was seri ously injured. In jumping from the truck on arriving at the fire he fell, and a wheel . of the truck passed over him. Both legs: were broken one of them was so mangled that ; t will have to be amputated. William Langdon, truck No. 1. was badly cut on the hands und right arm by falling glass. John Brenu and Fireman O’Neil, both of truck No, 1. were cut by falling glass.
