Museum Monday, and were at once pre- m-nted to the museum by Mr. A’. V. Cox. Minis* ;er Cox. in his letter to his nephew, simply stated tii.uhehad secured the deceased in the Upper NLe region during his recent visit to Egypt. It •v supposed that the minister hud good reasons f,, r not being more explicit. It ha> been suggest- ... that the Sultan bestowed this mummy upon the minister ns a fitting return of the compliment . ul jd him by Mr. Cox when the latter presented Ins imperial highness with a copy of his book. It IW <..r. exhibition at one of the halls of the muse um. Prof. O. T. Mason, the curator of the de partment of ethnology, spoke of it as being an unusually fine specimen, one of the best in the c , un try. The beauty of this mummy is that the Pnen bandages with which it is swathed have rc-er been broken open. The mask and the cartoons or painted shields placed about the bandaged body are perfect. Persons who have n fondness for mummies or Egyptian antiquities w... find much to interest them in this specimen. The mummy case is of acacia, or locust wood, the exterior painted a dark color. The wood is w .nderfully well preserved. The mummy case I camels carved out of logs, and when closed ha« shape of a mummy. Upon this case is carved arid painted a face with a long, pointed beard. The interior was hollowed out with nn adze, so tint the mummy when placed in it exactly fits i it. This nice measurement indicates that the mummy case was made to order and not bought ; icudy made. This fact and other indications about the remains lead to the belief that the de ceased was a well-to-do citizen, though there are n . insignia of royal rank. The mask is rauited .,M<i gilded. The colors are still vivid and the gold leaf bright. Covering the body, from the chin down to the feet are painted panels or eec- j cents quart bottii tions cf a material like papier m:\che, formed by j compressing layers of linen together. These pan- j vis form u sort of pai.ited shroud. The colors used by the Egyptian artist are still bright. A peculiar sort of cement or stucco, the secret of which was carried to the tomb with the last of the old Egyptians, was smeared over the surface of these panels and the artist painted upon the stucco, which took the colors and has preserved them in this case for about 2.500 years. Four of these little sections, about the size of ordinary I p:aying cards, lie upon the breast of the mummy, i Upon each is painted the figure of the mummied I Osiris. These cards look so much alike that S'.-iue irreverent attaches of the museum call I them the four jacks, and speak of the dead gen- I tieman as holding a pretty good hand. The other I panels beneath the four jacks are highly orna- | mented and bear representations of various dei- i tie-’ and funeral emblems. The central figure is | that of Isis, with outstretched, overshadowing 1 wings. Unfortunately there was no coffin-plate I on the mummy case, so the identity of remains has not been established. It is considered as | settled by the cut of the beard carved upon the i wooden face of the case, and the general indica tions that the bereaved family spared no expense I in fitting out the mummy, that the deceased was j h man of wealth aud importance in thecommun- j ity.-N. HEAR THE WITNESSES. MS affile .1 a|)!t<*r and Mars. Providence Journal, May 25.] The mo3t noticeable astronomical event of the month of June is the approach of Jupiter and Mars. On the 1st they are 9 apart. Both planets are moving eastward, hut Mars moves the faster, and overtakes Jupiter. The two pianeta can be recognized by a glance at the western sky in the evening. On the 23th. at 5 o'clock in the morning. Mars and Jupiter are in conjunction, j Mars being 59' south. Unfortunately. 5 o’clock j in the morning is not favorable for observation, j as the planets arc below the horizon at the time, i On the evening of the 27th, however, they will 1 be near neighbors, and on the evening i of the 2*ih there will be positive proof ; that the phenomenon has taken place, for Jupi- | ter will be found shining brightly on the west of | Mars, instead of on the east, where he has been j see?! fur many months. The famous red spot on | Jupiter that ha.- been visible since 1878 seems j now to be increasing in brightnes.-, judging from the report of un observer at Caen. This observer is the owner of an excellent telescope of five inches aperture. For three yeai-he has sought in vain to obtain a view of the led spot with :iis instrument. He has recently succeeded, and had several satisfactory views of this wonderful fea ture on the giant planet’s di«k. BU KLK.VS AUM( ( SALYK. The best Salve iri the world for Cuts, Bruises.
