The cotton crop of the south is a big thing—
larger than a great many would believe who have
not taken the trouble to apply the figures. This
is shown by the fact that the acreage in cotton of
the cotton growing states lust year was 17.322,388
acres. The crop for the season was 5,774,66")
bales, equal to 2,742,966,011 pounds of lint or
about 8,228,89«,033 pounds seed cotton. The great
expense attached to cotton growing is the cost of
picking. The lowest price paid for picking in
any of the southern states is fifty cents per 100
pounds. As the crop amounted to 8,228,898,033
pounds the cost of picking was $41,414,449.
