THE STYLE OF FAVORITE AUTHORS.
flen U lio It mi III la- Item) If TIiiijt Wrote as The)
Talk.
No man who writes for posterity
can afford to neglect the art of compost-
tion. 1 ir. Johnson’s verbosity was a stand
ing joke among many of his contem
poraries. Of him Macauloy said that he
^ _ _ wrote in a style in which no one ever
and spoiled iiv"indulgent parent*, but aside | made lov<-, quarreled, drove bargains or
from a hmifihtv manner. was voted a good i «vcn thought. When lie wrote to his
fellow hv all his a<ajuriifitarx'C’S. It sncins ! mends he wrote good hnglish, but when
their zenith, the old gentleman had
tired from tin active management of his
large plantations and nlaced them in
charge of his only son Henry, who was
just home from Vale. Henry was petted
It
that soon after attaining his majority h
had invited, among many other guests, a
college chum to spend several weeks with
him. A continued round of gayety fol
lowed, which led to unpleasant results.
The young New Yorker fi ll in love with
the girl Henry had chosen for himself.
She was the daughter of a neighboring
planter, who had long before planned
with old man Auelare that their children
should he married when of .suitable age,
and while Henry had never openly avowed
his love it was understood that the matter
was settled. So it was with some anxiety
tii.it young Auelare saw John Redwood so
deeply smitten, lfis own guest endeavor
ing to displace him in Annie’s affections !
’Twas enough to cause jealousy to creep
between him and Ids college friend. For
a t.im«' he bore it. patiently, but his manner
toward his guest lost much of its former
wurml h.
Matters came a crisis when, without a
word of explanation. Redwood moved his
trunk to the village inn and began driving
out to the young lady’s home ev Ty evening.
The now thoroughly enraged Auclart
wrote a note asking for an explanation oi
his conduct. Redwood made no reoly. A
friend of Auelare then sought an interview
with a view to an amicable adjustment
and mutual explanations. Miss Annie was
meanwhile unconscious of being the cause
of any trouble.
Red wood only smiled superciliously at
thi' meditating party and fold him that
Auelare* might go to h , as he would wed
the girl or die, despite any interference <»t
Auelare. A challenge followed.
They met. accompanied by seconds.
The word was given “ready, aim’’ win n
an uncart hly shriek broke the stillness ol
the morning air, and Annie, pale and ex
hausted, threw herself between them and
fell fainting in Henry Aue.lare’s arms,
moaning as she did so: “Have my Henry.’
The fury of Redwood knew no hounds.
Jumping forward, lie leveled hisrevohei
at the pair, hissing, “To h II with you
both,’’ and fired. A low moan from An
nic and a crimson flood Howed from a
wound in her arm.
Tim seconds seen it d paralyzed and the
villain was about to fire again when from
out I lie bushes sprang old llero. the watch
dog and constant companion of tin swoon
ing girl. Clearing the open space at
hound lie fastened on tin* throat of t in
cowardly Redwood and bore him to tin
gr< mini.
lit r» tin seconds discovered that the ball
which had drawn the blood from the fair
Annie’s arm had penetrated a vital part of
poor Auelare, ana lie lay apparently in the
throes of death with his arms around the
fainting girl. Before they could act tor ex
citement Hero had finished his work, and
Redwood lay before t hem a corpse.
Henry got well, however, and lived to
enjoy a'’long life w ith Annie ns his wife.
HUMOR AS A COMMODITY.
he wrote* for publication he “did his sen
tencos into Johnsonese.” “He had Jhis re- j
ward,” says a writer. “His ‘Rambler’ lies
unread on our book-shelves; his talk, as
recorded by Boswell, will be perused by |
thousands of delighted sludedts.”
Carlyle’s extraordinary style undoubted- 1
Iv militates against his being more extern- |
sively read. The feelings of the ordinary |
reader after having read “Sartor Re.sartux'’ |
are similar to those experienced by Jurrold 1
on a memorable occlusion. “On the author |
of ‘Mrs. ('audio’s Curtain Lectures’ re
covering from a severe illness, Browning’s
‘Sordellu’ was put into his hands. Line
«i*t **’• line, page after page he read, but no
con*ie>m1.jve idea could he get from the
mystic production. Mrs. Jerrold w.u-> out,
and lie had no one to whom to appeal
The thought struck him that he had lost
his reason during his illness, and that he
was so imbecile that lie did not know it.
A perspiration burst from his brow, and
he sat silent and thoughtful. As soon as
his wife returned he thrust the mysterious
volume into her bunds, crying out: ‘Read
this, my dear.’ After several attempts to
make, any sense out of the first page or so
she gave hack the book, saying: ‘Bother
the gibberish! I don’t understand a word
of it!’ ‘Thank heaven!’cried J* rr. *ld,‘t lien

I one of tlm simplest things in tin* w
I make a good cup of entice, ami thi
I easily be. accomplished by applying a litl.lt
j common sense. If you put boiling water
; on coffee, and do not let it boil, you have
all the good qualities preserved. One rea-

j cause it is boiled. The style of codec is
| just a matter of fancy. I have made as
good coffee in an old tomato cun as I have

' in this matter from the Turk?*
j and Arabians, who grind tie ir cmTei

I ground as line as possible put it in a litth
\ bug of unbleached muslin, which should lx

of the grounds. If you use a cupful cf un-
i ground coffee you can make a quart of very
;'lro/ig, black coffee. In mailing coffet
many people sacrifice ihr or for strength.
Bitterness conics from boiling. When boil
ing water is placed on tin* bag of ground
coffee, it should stand at least tlirci
1 minutes before serving. Remember, the
longt-r it stands the stronger it becomes.
