New York, June !t. The {fraud Jury Hworn in for thin month for .Jud{fe (Jihkr- sh eve is ex pouted to do Home very credita ble work in indicting the alleged bribe givers in the Broadway surface railroad matter, and it ia hoped that this time the warrant# lump'd will be served. The fuel that seven indictments were found in April became noised about at the time, and for some as yet unexplained reasons the per sons indicted were not arrested. These indictments were presented against alleged bribe givers. While everybody was won dering why the warrants were not issued and it was understoood at the time that it called for the imme diate arrest of Jacob Hharp, the grand master of all the boodle men. The gentle men who frequent the district attorney’s office awaited the arrival of Mr. .Sharp, but the great boodle master did not appear with the detective as was expected. The detective returned alone, and those who hoped to see Mr. Sharp in the district al torney’s office were greatly disappointed. Day after dnv passed away and Mr. Hharp came not. Then bets were freely offered that Mr. Sharp not only would never be tried for bribery, hut would never be ar rested. April and May died away, and Mr. Sharp was still free to chuckle over his freedom and to swagger mid say “Who’s goin' to 'rest me, I'd like lei know ?" When the public clamored for the arrest of a bribe give r James Richmond was nabbed and held up to public gaze. This was satisfactory so far ms Richmond went but the public wanted Sharp. They fed that Sharp was the king bee, and that Richmond was only a follower. livers day or two il was semi-ollleially auuounci .1 that Sharp svas about to be arrested. Oe casiniially it was said that important evi dence which would make Sharp's cniivie tion certain was still lacking, and thin il would lie an unsafe venture to gather bin in until the i huin of evidence against him wus complete. The failure tourrest Sharp, aft. r so much was said concerning the dc termination of the district attorney, luu- excited much comment throughout the city. Kverybody who has take ans interest m the proceedings against tie boodle aldermen was long ago sutisfii e that Sharp furnished the money to Drill- tlie aldermen, and that il would lie higlif, proper lo place him on the road to Sing Sing. ( hie of I lie aldermen I .Incline) is in prison, iml the public appet ite for that soli of thing has not been appeased, and then is a wid. spend feeling that the rest ot tin bribe lakers and bribe givers should b. sent to the same place. There is also a widespread feeling the the prosecution of these people is iml being carried on with t hat ih-give ..1' swift ness which would satisfy the public hear, and (lie judges ofthe courts of general ses sions are wondering why Mr. Martini does not send some of the indicted aid. rim n before them for trial. They art asking why Mr. Martino thinks it nwit sary to send such eases before the enurt of I lye i- and Terminer instead of placing then, oh the calendars of their courts. Tin court’s of i >yer ami Terminer will adjourn at the end of this mpnth until September or < Vtnber, and Ibis is the luontli'lil which . the boodle aldermen are to lie disposed «•( in rapid order. i>u Monday a number of murder eases were set for trial in tbu', court, ami it is doubtful whether anyoi [ the indicted aldermen will be tried before the enurt adjourns .for the summer This will throw ipeir eases over until- Septum- her or ()qtober. That'the public may not be altogethei disheartened it is proposed Uj have som. j bribe givers indicted by the present gram! i jury. The indictments found in April | against the same men will probably be de stroyed, and waruu.t.s may be issued oi: [ tin-new ones. Perhaps Jacob Sharp and I the other alleged bribe givers may then in , arrested, and some time next fall or in the. j following spring one or more of them tnay | lie tried, it is highly probable Unit undei this state of allairs the only conviction U. | lie recorded for tile veal’ will lie that, oi i Jaehne. Judge tiililersleeve, in charging | the grand jury on Monday, ealleil tlieir al j tent ion to the fact that only one of the al i leged bribe givers, Richmond, had been ; arrested, lie said important information j. concerning the bribe givers would be laid before them by the district attorney. Af I terward, to a reporter, Judge Gildersleeve I said that lie thus addressed the grand jury j at the request ofthe district attorney, but' he did not know the character of tlie in formation in Mr. Martino’s possession. The politicians are winking at each other and wondering what will be the upshot of J the whole atfair. A gentleman well known ill this city, who returned from Montreal I yesterday, said to a reporter last evening | that it was positively not true that “Billy ' I Maloney had sailed for Kuro{>e from [ Quebec several days ago. This gentleman ' said further that oil Monday ho met Mtv1 lotiey in the bar room of St Lawrence hull. ' in Montreal, and 1 li.it Maloney was in a j Very unhappy frame of mind. Maloney | -saidtliat lie hoped that tlie district at- | tornev would dispose of tlie bundle eases i in short order, h.s he is anxious to return I to this city as soon as the aldermen are put ' ofthe way, or as soon as it !>ecotnes i evident that they cannot be convicted and 1 the prosecution abaudens the Struggle. I Keenan is still at the Windsor hotel, and Is j lamenting the fact that he is not here to ' In-Ip his party -now that John Kelly is j dead to take possession of Tammany Hall. | Keoium always believed that the hea'dquar I ters of the democracy of t his county should ,1'e in Tammany Hall, and it was lie who | several times planned attacks upon that ancient fortress in the hope of capturing it for the county democracy. He thinks that the time has arrived for a bargain between the Tammany Hall people and the county I ■democracy, and believes that if he were in J fiis eit.v lie could bring about a union of the forces and install himself as John Kelly’s successor. At this time he deplores his despicable plight more than ever, and I wishes that he had never heard of the I Broadway railroad franchise, lie fears | that he is alxmt to lose the grandest oppor | tunity of Ills life to secure a leadership lie , has so long coveted. His ! friends in this city, who I appreciate his ability, are grief-stricken I oyer his present position, and every effort , will be made to make it safe for him to come to this city ho that lie may take tin | reins in his own hands. Tin y are in daily j communication witti him and are acting I under his advice. One of Keenan’s friends said to the re{>orter : “it is a terrible tiling ! for us at sueli a time as this to tie bereft of John's personal advice. If tie were here, so that he could see things with his ow n eyes, he could shai>e the future of the democracy of this county and state, and if there was some wny of ‘ wiping out these infant alderniauie cases, we would have easy sailing. Now we are in a had box, and if the republicans do not take advant- of the morning papers spoke of it as a chair may be duo to the foot that a cushioned lining specially molded iilioii one of the royal chairs at Bucking ham palace, had been fitted into the famous throne. It was a curious coinci dence that at almost the same moment the so-called “heir" to the Sikh sovereignty should have been soliciting the sympathy of his compatriots In the Pimjnuh, while hen in London the empress of India should have been seated upon the verita ble Honed throne of that once potent nation. -St. James' London (Janette. M hut lluriiiiiti shjs iirSu|HMKlltlon. 1’. T. Barnum says in u letter: “If the proposition of iny name as an honorary member ofthe Thirteen club will aid in the smallest degree in removing the ridic ulous and shameful superstition which ex ists in relation to tlie number thirteen, I shall feel honored in being so proposed. In my autobiography I dedicated a chapter to No. XIII, and showed by a letter from inv clergyman what a fortunate and honor ed number it is. It is humiliating that in this nineteenth century the superstition still lingers among intelligent persons. No per son ought to be hanged Friday for the next fifty years. I am in Bill accord with your society, so far as it tries to expel su- perstltution in regard to No. 13, or Friday, or anything else. For fifty years I have, so far as possible, made it a point to start my enterprises Fridays.”—Philadelphia News. The etlcct of fashion in art is curiously illustrated by Mine. Sarah Bernhardt's famous picture of “La Jeune h'ille et la Mort,” a most sensational painting of u I beautiful and pallid maiden wooed by a i hideous spectre. It was lauded by critics and finally purchased for about *2800. Il | was repurchased for about *1800 and given , to the artist. When her possessions went 1 to the hammer the picture was knocked I down for *70, hut this price will probably j rise w il h t in fortunes of tlie actress. The Cheyenne Wyoming) Leader tells | of Hie dhcovery of a natural fountain ol oil in tiros Centre Valley. It is located in a cave in the mountains. In the centre is | a bubbling oil fountain, the oil being per fectly pure and ns clear as if fresh from the oil refinery. In fact it is the product of a | natural refinery and the most potent forces j are engaged in its manufacture. From deep down in the bowels of tlie earth comes a sound as of steady churning, and the oil mass heaves and shakes at intervals as the continued product of the natural re fining process is poured into it.
