Miles, colored, of this place, was seated on
the south hank of the classic Alapaha, pull
ing a mudeat now and then, he was some
what startled by seeing a full-grown door
plunge into the river a short distance above
him. The deer swam for the south bank
of tlu river, which proved too perpendic
ular for the animal to climb, and it swam
down stream. When opposite Miles he
threw his Ashing line over its nock, fast
ened the hook in its flash and drew it
near the shore. Tne water was ouite
deep near the hank, which maae it
all the easier to manage the deer. Miles
prevented it from landing, fearing to come
in contact with the saws under its feet,
and in a short time two hounds, which
had been chasing the deer, came up,
plunged in and soon drowned the animal
