9 DAILY ENQUIRERI-J&UN: COLUMBUS, GEORGIA, WEDNESDAY MORNING, JUNE 28, 1886. BEWARE QF BEER. Stni .InnM Prr.rhri on TMnpenmro lo a li.nre OnttH-rlmi nf Imllanapnlta Women The Mortal W ho H«« “(Ini n Deail-Surt 1 Thlnir on (lloi , j“la of >'o Arrount. INDIANAPOLIS, IND., JllllP 10.- Sam Jones preached this morning to about one thousand women, his sermon being spe- oially for wives, lie was suffering from slight indisposition, but in a short time he had full control of his voice and spirit, Wid the services were fully sustained through out. lie took the twenty-third psalm for the text. In the course of his sermon he SHid : The only reason why I think sheep turn to goats, is because goats turn to sheep. If the gnte is open for you to go in. it is open just as well for you to come out. Understand what I mean. I don't say men can’t fall from grace; hut I am so afraid that I will that I keen on movin’. The Lord knows how to worK us; He don’t tell you Presbyterians that you have got grace, because If you were sure of that you wouldn’t do another livin’ thing, (‘live a fellow a dead-sure thing on glorv and lie won’t do anything. Here’s fust - the difference between us: You Presbyterians and Bnptists don’t know you’ve got it. and are working like forty lo get if. And we Methodists know we have got it. and are workin’ like forty to KEEP KKOM LOSING IT. (Laughter.] We are both of us scared. I don’t believe much in that old Calvinistic idea; if you seek religion, you haven’t got, it; if youget it, vou can’t find it; and if yon find it vou will lose it.andjjif you lose it vou never‘had it. (Renewed laughter.] ) liki the Methodist (Jan better. If you seek it vou get it, and if you get it you can find it; and if,vou find it, you won’t lose it; and if you don't lose it. you will have It. Bister, vou go home full of religion and stay there and behave yourself, and in a week your husband will call in the neighbors to identify you. You will be so changed that he will scarcely recognize you. One woman left this hall yesterday and went home and got down the Hilile and prayed, and said: “I start out on my religious life to-day,” and if that is all the good 1 have done in Indianapolis I am more than satisfied to make at least one home happy. There is the secret of tlu evangelist’s pay—the consciousness that r have made homes happy is worth all the world to me. I get so many saying: “Our home bus been like Eden sinceyou j v ere here." Every time I get a letter like J that 1 think of MV POOR PALE WIFE, and my desolated home 1 hirteen years ago, | and I thank (tod that His blessed religion came to redeem me. Shortly after Brother Small was converted 1 got a sweet letter from liis wife, and she said : “If you don’t do anything else this is enough for all the j troubles and trials you will have in your j i.iinistrv.” Isn’t strange that a man guin’ about doin’ things like that should be . abused and maligned and slandered. Why, ! half the people in fndiannpoiis don’t know ( Whether I am a fool, a crank, or a dog. : Thank (iod, He understands mid does me justice. Never help the devil lay your husband in i n drunkard's grave. The hardest thing I can say, and I say it in all kindness, is that the biggest fool (iod ever looked at is a wife wlio stirs a toddy for her husbnnd. I Sisters, let me warn you, by every drunken I husband, father, ami son in the land, that I he became so through taking drams, and j r many of them by drinking toddies stirred [ by 1 heir wives. You go homo mid empty | out those closets. I’ll tell you another | tiling: There are plenty of women who j drink lager beer. Mv, my. my! Did you hear what Brother l’rieo said about beer i the other day? Ik said that it agreed with [ the Dutch stomach, but that it didn't agree with the human stomach. The idea of WOMEN PRINKING LAGER PEEK! Why, if you would take some of thut i Stull' and put it in your hog trough, and didn’t sweeten it nr anything, there isn’t a ; poor half starved hog in the lot that would touch it. [Laughter.] If you did deceive some poor hog into drinking it, ns soon as lie got sillier lie would leave this town and j you couldn’t drive him back. I've heard women say that they drank beer for their 1 health. \Vhen my wife andchildren can’t live without drinking heer, I am ready to preach their funeral sermon. Do you lienr that? I say the only hope of America to day is in the fact that we have sober moth ers and wives, and if the women should be debauched into drinking, like the men do, we would soon become a nation of hope less drunkards. The evangelists will have a full day to morrow, and on Monday night they will start for St. Paul. [JOHN KELLY S “PEDIGREE." Hi> Amuslnir (maun of IIis History unit Thomas t. (irmlj’s. Cortland Standard, When our townsman, Mr. Ueo. J. Mnger, was a resident of Lowvtlle and treasurer of the Lewis County Agricultural society, in 1882, he secured a promise from the late Hon. Shortly before the date fixed for i the fair lie wrote Mr. Kelly for a few facts I in bis history and Mr. Grady’s for publics- j tion in the Lowville papers. There* is a mystery in the suicide of Kina; Ludwig II. which will hardly be fully 1 explained while the present generation lives, says a correspondent. For the benefit or those who, after the custom of I criminal lawyers, raise the question : j Who is benefited oy the act? I submit a I few facts not mentioned thus far, but true, nevertheless. I do not draw any conclu sions, but history, later on, will render a final verdict. I There exists in Bavaria a very large es- I tate, owned by the house of Wfttelsbach, I the royal house of Bavaria. By legal pro- ! visions the income goes to the eldest i brother of the king or to the next of kin. I Prince Carl of Bavaria, brother of King i Ludwig I.. held the estate for many years, ; and adneo considerably to it. When he died of old age, a couple of years ago, the I question arose whether the income should I go to Prince Otto, the brother of King | Ludwig II., or to Prince Luitpold, the ! eldest brother of the late King Max II., and the prince who is at present regent of Bavaria. Ludwig II. decided in favor of his brother Otto. Luitpold, thinking him self wronged, took the matter into the courts, hut was, after long and tedious litigation, finally defeated. Since that time Ludwig and Luitpold have not been on verv friendly terms. As long os King Ludwig II. was alive the estate mentioned was administered in behalf of his insane I brother Otto. Ludwig iA dead and his brother Otto Is made king in name, while in fact Prince Luitpold rules. The latter, now being next of kin to the actual king, who has no brother left, will hereafter en joy the income of said estate, amounting to over two hundred thousand dollars an nually. Ludwig’s suicide has made Luitpold’s fortune, and the servants and attendants of t he dead monarch will surely not re ceive severe punishment for negelecfcing the c are and surveillance due to the poor insane man. These facts may possibly ex plain why the strictest orders were not , given and enforced to keep close watch j over Ludwig, upon whom it was known i that his disposition must have a sinister influence in the unsettled condition of his I mind. But we will not jud^e. Let the I dead bury their dead. The living, who, perhaps, played a silent part in the gloomy j tragedy, arc above our reach. Georgia Politics.
