Concerning Tick Branch, in Webster county, the Americus Recorder says: "A nun lost his calf which had a bell on. He heard the bell in the branch and went aft.-r his calf. The bell was in the posses- fimi of a large tick. The ticks had eaten up the calf, and were ringing the bell to call the cow up that they might eat her.” Athens Banner-Watchman: Think of brandy thirty-two years old. It will make thf mouth of a prohibitionist, as well as those who imbibe, water. A gentleman in Athens bought a ease of brandy thirty-two years ago, for which he paid - ftifl, and in looking over some ancient effects found a bottle of this brandy. The stopper was like putty and the brandy like nectar. It will do to think of, but not to drink. The White Star Line steamboat comt pany, of Rome, has brought suit agains- (iordon county for damage caused by de tention at the bridge in that county on the Oostanaula river last November." There were heavy rains, almost a flood at the time, and the river was so high that it was impossible for the boat to pass under the bridge. The boat was detained for six days and now sues for damages. Lafayette County Messenger. The death of Rail Clowdis, ol Chattooga, is mention ed elsewhere. No one wan better known a» a joker than he. During the war Gen. Sherman called at his house. The whole earth in that neighborhood was blue with Yankees. Rad went to the door, and as soon as he took in the situation lie said: “General, I am glad to see you, but I didn’t think you would bring your whole family with you.” Oglethorpe Echo: Mr. E. L. Johnson, of Crawford, once accepted the appoint ment of justice of the peace in one of the districts of Oglethorpe county. Boon after he was qualified, a couple presented them selves to be by him made man and wife. It was his first and lie did up the job to the best of bis ability. The third night after the performance the groom of the occasion stole a horse and the third week after was sentenced to the penitentiary. This so dis gusted Mr. Johnson that lie" gave up Lis commission, saying that if his official acts were to have such bad effects he would perforin no more, and he has kept his word. LaFayette Messenger: At Dolf Strange’s a hen with an interesting brood selected a roosting place outside the fence, but near the house. It was a fatal mistake, in the morning the chickens were gone and the hen lay dead, the work of a night nawk. Liolfuid not give ihe corpse honorable burial, but left after peppering its breast freely with strychnine. The next morn ing lie found the prowler dead by the side of its victim and wet with the dews of night. It had come to its last banquet. James S. Bennett, an aged sire of seventy summers, wedded Mrs. Elizabeth Moody, a lady a few years his junior, in Pierce county June 12. They had been old sweet hearts in their youthful days, but some thing occurred to prevent their union and they separated. A negro mimed Jim Edwards was arrest ed at Birmingham Monday und jailed for passing a counterfeit half dollar. Detec tives suggest that the coin is the product efa gang of operators in Blount county, hut there is no evidence connecting Ed wards with them. Telegrams from Washington announce that Captain Marlin had recommended Dr. J- H. Winn for postmaster at Birmingham, and it is supposed thal he will be appoint ed. It has been thought all along that the doctor had the best chance. He is a stal wart democrat, being at present president of the Jefferson democratic club, and has been almost a lilt* long friend of Captain Martin’s. He lias been in Washington for a Week urging his claims. The iirst gun of the Chambers county campaign was tired at Fredonia last Satur day. Mr. J. H. Harris made a speech for the nominees; Judge Robinson, who is a candidate for probate judge, advocated his own cause, attacking the legality of the late democratic convention which con vened at LaFayette; and Mr. Williamson, who is also a candidate for probate judge, spoke in favor of his own cause. Clayton is a good organizer and a man of splendid administrative capacity. • liese are the qualities Which greatly help to make a good college president. His ap pointment gives general, if not perfect sat ■-’faction, and tiiis is a great point gained, which trustees may often overlook in elect- t'lg college officers. Gen. Clayton lias suc ceeded in all his important undertakings in life, and it has been truly s lid that “nothing succeeds like succe*s." Tl « h genem rejoicing in Tuhlwlur.s.i over the election of Genual r nvtm, and he and his family will nit'e't a warm welcome lure. Willie Kniekmeyer, in company with I several young men, was at Cape San BJas. 1 At the “haul over” they found signs of a wreck, Willie Kniekmeyer pulling out of the water a large brass-bound, rubber spring block-and-tnckle, with the words, “Patented June io, 1SS3,’’ upon one side* of it. No one. as far as the Times has been able to learn, has heard of nnv recent wreck at that point, and a supposition ex ists that some vessel unknown to anyone, lias been wrecked near the dangerous I point, and not a soul left to tell the tale.j There is visible in the water at that point ropes, pieces of plank, and otlu r signs of a wreck. Tuesday the Francis Miller tu*ka crowd down to view the wreck. Dr. T. M. Palmer, oil behalf of T. M. ; Carnegie, of Duugeness, presented to the 1 Fernandina boat club, Friday evening, a silver challenge cup, which was received there by express a few days ago. The cup is of solid silver, standing about nine inches in height, artistically chased with marine designs, aud hearing the inscription, "Car negie Challenge Cup.” It is a valuable gitt. The cup will be held by the club as the most preferred prize in the various contests of the near future, and it is ex pected that, the struggles to obtain a tem porary possession of ft will result in n bet ter cioss of boats being brought into the club. Arrangements are nearly completed for a regatta July 5, and every member who owns or can borrow a boat will prob- j ably enter the same for the race. For several days John E. Norris, a wealthy merchant of Louisville, Ky., lias been in Jacksonville making himself gen erally agreeable. Mr. Norris called and invited Miss Lelia D. Jones to take a ride, which she readily consented to, and while driving around and admir ing the beauties of Jacksonville it was pro posed and agreed that they proceed to the residence of Rev. Dr. Tally and there be joined in the tie of matrimony. The hap py couple on their return to Mrs. Patter son’s surprised her by relating the romance and of a sudden change of name of the young sister, Congratulations were ex tended and all are now as happy as coaid he wished.
