No 1 Well take a walk along almost any street in the city just after dark, and you will hear a piano going in almost every house.” This remark was addressed to us by a gentle man who is himself a musician, so we asked: “Are they musicians, or are they just hanging away to hear the instrument make a noise?” “I think,” Raid he, “critics as a rule are too severe upon amateur performers. They are fond enough of music, hut the truth is the average young lady who professes to play does not expect to become a professional, and as a rule they have not yet developed enthusiasm nor patience enough to Vie willing to spend sufficient time in practice to cultivate the art as they should. We ought to have more choral societies, amateur bands and other associations for the cultivation of music. There has been an improvement in this direction within a few years, hut it is still so comparatively slight that we can hardly’call it more than a tendency.” “Look at that caterpillar weh in the shade tree there. If you will tell the readers of the En- ^cikhu-Si’n about it, I’ll tell you how to prevent such things as that.” We promised and he went on to say: “Tie a layer of cotton wadding round the trunk of shade trees. The caterpillars, unable to pass over the cotton, will then spin their cocoons on the trunk below. Afterwards the cocoons can readily lie removed and destroyed, the foliage Vicing unimpaired." Speaking of shade trees, we heard a gentleman who ape nils much of hi- time in Washington say Vh«* other day that l!road street reminded him of Pennsylvania avenc . This n account of tlie many beautiful shade trees. The ornamentation of Columbus with shade trees, however, is not a distitictive peculiarity of the city, and that lias never liccn claimed, bn* there are “beaut \ spots” which can \ ie with 1111> in any * ity in the United States, and lower Broad street is one of them. Then why should not all of our streets In* just as pretty? 11 is true that there is a lack of trees m many quarters of t hi city. As a general rule it ma> he said that wide streets ure ehnracteristic • if what may he eKiled modern city architect tire. If the streets were narrow ;m-i degenerated into question asked of one of our leading gunsmith the other day. He went on to say that people fr* * (juently kept them at home and sometimes slept with them under theii pillows. Among the most senseless of customs is that of sleeping with a pistol beneath the pillow. It is a habit that has cost scores of innocent lives, the latest case being that told in our columns several days ago, when a young girl mistaken for a thief by a half-awakened youth, received a fa tal wound. FREDERICK Broad Brook, Conn. 1. in Winch is the mother of the chicken, the hen which lays the egg or the hen that hatches it? ' This has long been a hone of contention in rural debating clubs. It lias not yet. so far a? aur information goes, been tackled by the Seale debaters, but we proposed to furnish them with ’till more interesting and difficult problem. sc \ m*. r w as atllicted V< VRS AMI Midi, ealp. fat Ih . it ; A gentleman down town has a garden, some chickens and a pet rabbit. In the garden is alien’s nest and in the nest are several eggs. Eor some weeks the pet rabbit has made a practice of lying at night and quite frequently through the day on the nest containing the eggs. One day during the week a chicken was hatched from one of the eggs. The process of incubation has been close ly watched and the gentleman knows that no hen has been near the egg since it was laid. Now the question we present is: “If a hen lays an egg and a rabbit hatches It, which of the two is chargeable with its parent age?” ‘‘No, we sell very few pistols these days. The people have either quit carrying them, or the country is well supplied. I think very few are carried on tlie person these days.” This was the reply made in answer to the nth Ec/ema on the ears and neck, w hich the druggist, \ . yur remedies, prnmmneod <>m of the worst ca.-v that had come under his notice, lie advised m to try you< Cuticura Remedies.and afterlivi dav- iise my scalp and part of my face were entire I cured, ami i hope in another week to have m ears, neck and the other part of m\ face ( tired „ , HKlOiAN SLADE. 120 E.
