DAILY ENQUIRER * SUN : COLUMBUS, GEORGIA, TUESDAY MORNING JULY 27, \«86. ABROAD. A Columbuslte Enjoying the Comfort* of a Charming Summer Resort. Nome Interestlmf llomlp Uioul on Olil and II. torlenl INilnl- Curler’. Out shir, Not so I'rejio leront After All—Kalllnir in l.toe Oitli it flerto.HIO. Hpcria! Correspondence liii'iulror-Hiin. PrMWicii Halt,, Saybrook Point, Conn., July 24.—On the 201 h we left New York for this place. Taking the Shore . Line railroad, wo skirt uluiijc the Hound ; const of Connecticut, inuutitiff dozens of lit tle towns, each wi.h their bimy fa<'torlen- lnrae ana smn'i. Some, like Stanford, Bridgeport ami New Haven, are large places where an extensive business is done. All along aa we come, wt- get glimpsen of ; the sound and little baysoxtendinK up Into the Shore Line. On the edges of these are | large numbers of houses—some built only ; for siimmur residences for tiie wealthy i citizens of the larger cities. The ! bays arc full of little sail boats, for i the enjoyment of their owners, who, after three months of rest, return to their cities j wit h their families all tanned and browned, j but invigorated and strengthened by the health-giving salt air. As we pass along we see how industrious mull has, from a stony and sterile soil, con verted this into a most productive country. While you see many places too rocky to cultivate, yet all about in spots you will see that from every f tosslblo place the stones have teen gathered and made into everlasting fences and the ground has been converted into productive fields and such crops as a Uoorglan never dreamed of produced. Even the madam, little as she knows of farming, was struck with the quantity of grain produced, which, when cut, covered the ground. 1 always thought Carter’s story of his oats was something of an erag- f eration, but after seeing these, 1 believe— nlinost believe 1 think I almost believe, it might have been true. After a very pleasant ride qf one hundred and four miles m three hours we reached this place, and a delightful place it is. The hotel is an elegs ing four hundred and Mtty-live reel, long. ‘ • ■ • ■ 5 f 0 grass, the Nladam is constantly calling at tention to some beautiful wild flower un known to our latitude. Wild roses in great profusion and delicate tints arc seen, ( while the held is white with millions of field daisies of a size we never see j at home;. many of them fully fhe -in- of lilt “Dollar of our Daddies.” By the way no one who has not been in the- hnoit of examining wild flowers with a magnifying glass-has ever realized the b ,-aui ie’i. to be found even in the most aim- j pie of them. Try it and be thankful for the suggestion. A new world of beauty and wonder at the Creator’s skill will be - .lisr losed. With the advice to any of your readers, i whose health requires toning up, to visit i this piacc, w here, oi. most moderate terns, they find all they can require, I close for the week. T. IsK-liiiivnr in Mulavlii. X. V. Batavia, N. Y.. July 24.—Miss Clara Osthelmer. 17 years old, living at Corfu, n village ten miles wi st of here, where her father is an ngent for sewing machines, has had many admirers. The one most favor ed was Kdwurd biddings, lit years old, whose family arc wealthy. The villagers were not a little surprised when it was learned, a few days ago, that Mr.Ostheimer had forbidden fiiddings to visit the house, and compelled Clara to cease receiving his att l ntions. Cliddinga, learning that Clara’s parents bad arranged to send her away from home yesterday, went to a stable and hired a horse that is tied of foot and accustomed to long drives, lie then drove to the home of liis sweetheart and, leaving his horse standing at the door, went into the house. There lie found that the girl was prevented from greeting him by Mrs. Ostbeimer.who suspected that all was not right, biddings firmly held the mother while he crid to the girl to run and jump into the buggy. tilie followed his instructions without waiting for shawl or wrap. He promptly joined her and the two drove off. Mr. Osthelmer, who returned home almost im mediately, started in pursuit, following them for nearly ten miles and then losing sight of them. Mr. Osthelmer went to Cowlesville, while the runaways tinned east and went U> Attica. The father upon finding that he was on the wrong trail re turned and followed them to Attica, where he learned that the lovers had driven through the town about half an hour be- s his arrival. IFFY'S I THE W WHISKEY Duffy's Raw Beef Formula Tor Muliirin. 143 Catherine St., Elizabeth, N. J. Gentlemen—My trouble has been chron ic malaria. I gained 2A pouhds the first week. D. H. HOWLAND. 118 Jackson St.. Patterson, N..). DearSir.- Asa mail; of using your Dully - -* Pure Malt Whiskey mid Raw Beef Formula I Hml [bat all the malarial fcollniis I hail have been expellee ; my appetite has re turned and a gradual increase in weight and strength has taken place. JOHN DUFFY. inti Hfty-five feet Ion, The halls and rooms are large and the talc the beat I have ever seen at a hotel. At tached is a large farm, whence are gath ered daily the vegetables consumed. The point- in a piece of land stretching out into fhe sound and nearly surrounded by salt water. From the window where i write is seen the farm stretching away to the west. One hundred and twenty-five bushels of corn t-othe acre is the usual crop and no one who sees the luxuriance of growtli and thickness with which it is planted would doubt it. A large number of beautiful cottages have lit en erected by the millionaries of Hartford, Middletown and New Haven, and at niglit they resort to the spacious parlors, halls and piazzas oft-he hotel where they meet many of the first people of these cities who make annual visits to this charming seaside resort. 1 can conceive of no better place to idle away a few weeks in summer and to recuperate from the j hurry and worry of American life than this charming place. For those who desire fishing, boating, bathing and riding, enn be hnd in abundance, while the absence of all demoralizing amusements makes it differ from most summer resorts. Saybrook is a place of some historical interest, living one of the most ancient suttlements in this country. The original town and tort were upon the point. The present town lias been built some two miles further up the river. A very old fi ^avoyard is to he seen at the point, where e the remains of many whose uiimes were prominent In the early history- ot Connecticut. On this point wiih first found ed Yalu college, after some years removed to the more suitable site it now occupies ut New Haven. From here the Right Rev. Bishop Heabury went to England to obtain consecration which, after a long delay, tie obtained, if I remember right, in Scotland. Return ing to this country, lie laid the foundation of the Episcopal church in Connecticut so well that- to this day it has remained, if not the strongest, one of the strongest in the state. The little church in Sayhroolc contains a heaulifid memorial window to his memory, l.udy Feutviek, one of the early settlers, did much for the place and the church, and after her this little house is called Fenwick lmll. Some years since In building the railroad to this place il was found necessary to puss through the old grim yard, end as the grave of Lady Fenwick was directly in the path the remains wen disinterred, ami with some ceremony laid in the church ' yard In Snybroek and a monument to the memory of this good woman erected. A j very pretty little church has been erected I near this bouse and given to the peoplo. i It is not yet finish)d, and the seats are only hard-wooden seated chairs j and hot comfortable enough to permit the i worshipper to nod, even if the rector ex- | coed the orthodox length In bis sermon (fifteen minutes-, which I am told he [per- [ haps in consideration of the seats i?) j scl- j dotn reaches. I omitted in the proper place to say that ; for years past the thermometer has rarely if ever exceeded 7ii‘ii# the hottest part of I the day. Another good thing about this house is that they have a children's dining room, I where nil children, unless perfect in 1 heir behavior, are required to eat. I know one little throe-year-old girl in Columbus whom, if all the children were like, there would be no use for this room. Don't all claim her I On Tuesday, the day wo left New York, ; when we arrived at Bridgeport we saw an immense crowd congregated ut the depot nrounu a pile of broken railroad ears and soon learned that the train which left New York just one hour and ten minutes ahead of us had met with a ter rible accident, ami had run into a gravel train and had killed several moil and wounded a number more. This was the train which we lmd proposed taking, but the madam, for some woman’s reason, suggested that \u should take n later one, and we accordingly did so. This goes to show that the saying may be true, , ‘ That a man seldom loses anything by taking his wife's advice.” There is a beautiful oak grove on this point where a large covered platform has been erected for dancing. A stable is also furnished to shelter and feed horses of such us choose to ride from Saybroak and the But-rounding country in order to enjoy an old-fashioned clam bake. The railroad has now been extended to this grove. Be ing nearly surrounded by salt water, it lias a cool breeze at all times, ami when lit up ' with Chinese lanterns and filled with gay Yankee girls, must be a pleasant place. No doubt many’ll staid yankee paterfamilias ! lias here met his fateand to this day either blesses or curses that particular ‘‘Rhode : Island dam bake.” A stroll along I the asphalt walk which skirts !• the beach brought us by the j rector's eottuge. His reverence, as he sat on the piazza, saw us, and with the usual l hospitality of his cloth, cordially invited us in. The writer’s well known partiality for the clergy, of course, prompted ac ceptance. A pleasant chat of half an hour discovered that we had many mutual ac- ! quaintance. If, upon parting,' we left him as well pleased with us as we were with i him we can promise ourselves some ! very pleasant hours during our stay. ! On all of our trips it has happened that we have made the acquaintance of some of the clergy, and I am sure we meet no class of men whose society we more enjoy. Is it possible that the writer missed liis calling? In strolling about over the thick, green fore Yesterday the couple returned home P with the Information that they lmd been married at Attica. They went to the home of t he bridegroom’s parents, rind were cor dially received, and it is thought that, be fore many days they will lie forgiven by the bride s parents. Bsith the young people art, members of tbe Episcopal church In Corfu, and the bride, who Is possessed of a sweet, voice, is a member of the church choir. The Wasting Diseases of infants and chil dren are by no means confined to an insuf ficient supply of food. The trouble is that the food is injudiciously selected, and the limited digestive power of the child is un able to assimilate it. Melliu’s food, when prepared according to the directions, forms tbe best substitute for mother’s milk that- has ever been produced. ^ jyd tUjth&sat lm Over the backyard fence—“I say, do you know the Shirtlesses are going to move this spring! ’’ “Mo! are they, though? Well, I am glad. They have made the street a by word.” “Yes, but then Mrs. Hhiftlesshas fallen heir to ij-15,000 and she has bought an ele gant house.” “Oh, I always lilted her, but her young ones—well, they are real kind o’cunning, after all.”-—Hartford Post.
