•flipSlrnii(f«‘ PerfornmnwN of tlio Mexican Jud^. jjew Orleans States. El Paso, Texas, Aug. l.-Your corres pondent went across the Rio Grande to- {light to call on Cutting. He passed the sentinel with some difficulty, and got into the prison only to find that Cutting had been taken into court again for his twen tieth private trial, so-called. He was met climbing up the hill to the prison under guard ou his wav back. He is a handsome man, but since his confinement his blacl hair bus become streaked with gray, and' I it needs trimming. A fortnight’s growth of beard was on Ins face. His large, frank blue eyes looked more troubled than when your correspondent saw him last, and his bronzed face wore a troubled look, lie grasped the hand offered him warmly but with a wearied air. “I tell you this is growing monotonous,” I he said; “I did not mind imprisonment at first, but it is beginning to tell on me now.” “What have they been doing to you to- ile smiled and said: “You would never guess. You know I have been expecting all day to be sentenced, and when the guards called to escort mo before the judge I thought my time had come.” “What sentence did you expect?” DAILY enquirer- WEAK, nKRvous —ABrn— debilitated men i a n r' WOMEN J seeking Health. I noticed that be was busy ' with law books. Well, this is what made I me laugh. The judge gravely notified me that since I did not recognize the laws of Mexico as applying to my case, and did ! confess myself amenable to the laws of Texas, lie had determined to substitute the laws of Texas for those of Mexico, and try me and punish me according to the Texas code in ease of libel and slander. They seemed to think this an act of great cleui- ! eney on their part to try me by the laws 1 which I admitted I was amenable to.” i “Was the charge upon which you are on trial stated to you to-day?” “Yes, at last. There' is not a word in it ; about any contempt of court. It is simply ! and solely for the publication in the El Paso (Texas) Herald. They seem to think they have made their position immovable by trying me by tiro laws of Texas. “Judge Bingham was so disgusted that he put on bis hat and left the room. Then the Mexican lawyers and judges scoffed and jeered at the United States. Really J am almost ashamed to look a Mexican in the face. Even the prisoners here jeer at ! my hopes of aid from the government. “1 cannot believe.” Cutting continued, ' “that the government will permit such an outrage. Understand me, 1 hate all this 1 notoriety, but I feel that accident made me stand for a principle. I cannot con ceive the government can do otherwise than demand my release and enforce its demand.” Further inquiry confirmed the statement that the alleged Texas libel was the basis for the suit, and it has been translated for the court in Cutting’s case. The feeling on the American side is war like and on the Mexican triumphant and scornful. nn.l'mmL 0 ? health. h> alone, pliysip,,] o„m, rp , So L"V.'Heal Mtl’lmts, and Is a ,*,| t ., L . tv Him -tort r ' ,i ;» ,i| '' i 'rihK in,,,. « n . .. i . n long-standing, chronic, nm-v- ciiii '.MVand l> ‘Infill iIWhm-x. j ;vt-rv i'.' - 1 . Chicago Herald. An addition to the Japanese Village now ou exhibition at the Columbia theatre has arrived. It is a little girl. It came yester day afternoon. The father is Isoshima, the tailor, while the mother is Yeue, a lady of the tea-house. The child is au interesting bit of Japanese humanity and resembles more than anything else a good-sized Japanese doll. The baby weighs about Jive pounds, and has coal-black hair au inch and a half long, while its delicately penciled eyebrows are arched in tie true “Mikado” fashion. The mother is d ting well, while the father acts like a huge ! school-boy who has just receh'ed j a new present, and cannot allow it to get 1 beyond his sight, and very seldom out of his arms. The little one may consider itself lucky that it will remain in this coun- j try during thf; first thirty days at least, as by doing so it will avoid a great deal of trouble in the observance of time-honored Japanese customs, which are never aliowed to be neglected in that country, but will be j dispensed with in this land. If in Japan, i oil the third day the baity would have had its head shaved for the first time. The exact day for the rite of shaving the head varies iu the various districts, but the day is always ou or after the third, anti never • later than the sixth. On the seventh the j child is named, while on the fourteenth its first birthday is celebrated, two weeks after the dav on which it was born. ] plan as in this country, the day being observed with a feast and the making of presents. On the twenty-first day another least is held, larger than the first, and more presents are made. On the thirtieth day, if the babe is a boy, but on the thirty-first day in {his case, as the child is a girl, a grand feast is given, and for the first time the baby is taken to the temple, where propitiator/ offerings are laid before the ! gods in the shape of rice cakes and various sweetmeats. The parents of this child are believers in Shingtooism, and the child will be brought up in that sect. The members of the Japanese Village uid no work all day,but gathered iu groups discussing the name for th^new-comer. A selection was at last arrived at, and last , night it was formally announced that the child would bear the name of Columbia Hill Yene Isoshima. Water-Tlylit tiuuj.ititiui'iit.
