Washington, July 81.—Whether the democrats will lose the next house, whether they can Rain a majority in the -wenate by tills winter’s elections ana whom thM republicans will nominate for the presidency are matters much debated here in concessional clonk rooms and in hotel parlors. Republicans are hopeful of carrying the presidency in 1888, but it is a curious fact that ns they recover hope so they show an .aversion to trying Mr. Blaine again. “1 shall speak and work for Blaine, and ns bard as 1 can,” said n prominent republi can senator. “ We are old friends, and if be is nominated I shall do all I can to elect hint; but I hope we shall try some other man. I want the party to have a good ■•chance of success and no needless obstacles and I believe we should do better with some other man.” That is a Very general opinion among prominent republican senators and repre sentatives. They do not express it publicly, •but in private conversation they do not conceal that they are not favorable to tak ing up Mr. Blaine again. And this opinion is uttered by men who are careful to say at the same time that they are personally friendly to Mr. Blaine and believe in him. But they believe that he would not be a good cu'ndidate for the party to win with. LOGAN AND THE FIELD. If one Inquires about other candidates, he bears very little. Gen. Bogan isregard- •ed as* strong man; Mr. Sherman and Mr. Harrison are well thought of, and Gen. Hawley has friends. It was remarked b.yla republican congressman that all these ex cept General Logan live in doubtful states and coino up for re-election to the senate this fall ami winter. “They will make a vigorous campaign In their states this fall, 1 guess,” said this congressman. “Then there's Mr. Hearts,” he added, “with Iiah usual luck he hies no senatorial election to carry; he’s been a very fortunate man, your Mr. Everts. ” As lo the congressional elections, it seems on the whole probable, to the best party judges of both sides, that the demo crats "..ill retain control of the house, but by a diminished majority. PROHIBITION AND LABOR. icrhaps, in Tennessee. Texas and Vei iont will remain as they are. We ina, r tin one in Virginia, and we shall probabl; lose one in Wisconsin, which is ihe post master-general's state, and has two wea> republican districts. “Now, then, count, over what wo havi marked down. I have made a rathe favorable count, naturally, for the repub ...•nn Bidu; and you see that according ti ' nis woohould gain one in Florida, two ii Indiana, one each in Louisiana, Pennsyj , inla. Virginia and Tennessee, three eaei i Ohio and Michigan, and four in Nee i ork—seventeen inali; and the democrat a ill gain one in California and one in Wis nnsln. That will leave us a clear gain o ilitcen, and leave the house democratic by thirteen majority.” \ llrlllliiid llrmi-Liirlil III' hail In I ml in. ‘hlengo Herald. "I've run locomotives in every state in this country,” said a veteran engineer to inquisitive young man who stood around way i while'the machine was being oiled up, ask ing questions; “and that ain’t all, neither. I!l|{ IjllVnll'MIBj mu* inim ***** v iwi) *iUJViit.i i I've run locomotives in England, Germany, France, Italy, Egypt and India. Yes, sir, in far-ofl' Iiiaia.” “Do they use head-lights on their en gine over there? ” inquired the young man. “Head-lights? No, indeed. Not in In dia. They don’t know what a head-light is ill that heathen country. But I hadal- ways been used to usin’ head-lamps, an' It was kin’ o’tough to run without’em. So I applied to the superintendent for a lamp, hut he just laughed at me, and told i if 1 wanted to use a light I could fur nish it myself. Of course, I didn’t want to go to this expense, seein’s my salary was purty small any how ; so I concluded to go without a light. But on my next trip east, as I was a-runin’ along through a gorge in the valley o’ the Bramapootra river, just about dark, I lmd one of the reutest pieces of luck you ever heard of. saw somethin’ shiny lyin’ 'side of the track, an’ I stopped an’ went back an’ picked it up. It was a great big stone, full of light, an’, by gosh, 1 stuck it up in front of my locomotive, an’ hud the best head light I ever rode behind. The only trouble with it was that the brilliancy of the light kind o’ hurt my eyes ’fore I got used to it. But it was a daisy, an’ made the track almost us light as day for half a mile ahead.” “W’liat was It?” “A diamond, of course. You wouldn’t expect a roan to run a train by the light tie could get out. of a common nigger-head dornlck, would you?” tli . “Wind with the prohibition vote in the southland in some northern states and the unknown purposesoftho K nights nf Labor, It is not. easy to make a guess at the result if the full congressional elections,” said a western democratic member of congress to your correspondent. “We shall lose sonie seats, ami we shall gain some; 1 don’t now think we shall have ao large a majority as in the present house, but i do not believe it. will be much diminish ed. We should have to lose twenty-tliree seat* to give the republicans the house by , , „ , even <>ue vote. 1 don't see where they are i 'f, 11 , minds, ami tak to gain so many from us. On the other hand I think we shall gain some from them. In the west there, is a certain amount of dissatisfaction in our party, hut ■ as far us I can learn it is not with us in •congress, but with the administration. I don’t mean about offices, for that goes for little or nothing; hut on matters of policy. But in tny belief this will—in the west at least.—help us. Our people lire with us and wt'd stand by us. Besides that, the rank and •die of the party want to sec it have a fair chance, and you’ll find, I think, a full •democratic vote cast this full. No, I don’t see any reason for discouragement.” A republican congressman said : “I am uot so sanguine of our carrying the next congress as some of our people are. Wo BLOOD AND MONEY. The canvass there is going to be very lively on our side., as Sen ator H iglit you were in Sacramento sure People who got all dressed for church changed their minds, and taking off their clothes, put their feet to soak in a tub of water and fanned themselves. The sun blazed and blazed for hours, and never seemed to change its location at all. The dogs crawled under the house uloiig with tiie eats, both on good terms for the time, and cows’ tongues flnpped around their forelegs as they walked. The shingles turned up on the roofs, and when a man walked round the corner the sweat rati down into his shoes and sprin kled the sidewalk. You could bake a batch of bread in George Hark’s refrigerator. Tlie solder: on the tin roofs melted and ran down into the gutters like rain water. I doubt if we gain more than four. The democrats are pretty badly split up into k Cleveland and Hill factions, but they must | work together on congressmen.
