Washington, August 1.—Mr. Edmunds has the reputation of being one of tin most unapproachable of public ihon. He is very rarely quoted in any newspaper, •nd when-he is it is generally through the medium of some third person. He does most of his talking In the senate, where, during the last session, he has been one of the most conspicuous llguves in the de bates. I found him this afternoon in the Wide, beautifully-lighted parlor of his new house. This is one of the most comfort able houses in Washington. Its interior is a model of simplicity and good taste. The ventilation and the lighting of this house are perfect. It is built on the French plan, with a half story on the first door. This is used for a billiard room, oilice ami storeroom. The wood work of the inte rior of the house is light pine, which adds to its bright look. The whole atmosphere Of the place is cheerfulness and light. The senator this afternoon sat upon a linen- covered sofa, dressed in a suit of dark blue flannel, an<) chatted as easily and grace fully upon current topics as If he wore a new member of congress. There is nobody in the world so pleasant as a new member, and hardly any ono so unpleasant as an old member when called upon to discuss public questions. I asked Mr. Edmunds what lie thought Would be the issues in the coming cam paign. He said : “I think that the princi pal point to bo mode by the republicans is the inoompetency of the democrats to ad minister the affairs of the government. The house has done absolutely nothing of general importance. The senate has sent over to it important legislation and the house has simply refused to consider it. Ita timidity ami lack of grasp were con spicuous features of its record. The ses sion has been long druwn out for ap parently no purpose beyond illustrating various phases of its business incompeten- cy. “Tho house Is subject to special criticism for its failure to reduce tariff and internal revenue taxation. These taxes when they Were laid were proper and necessary. The times are changed. These taxes are now to a considerable extent a needless burden, cohstantly piling up a surplus which is a continued temptation to extravagant and wasteful legislation. The house has shown its business ineompetenry in this by fail ing to devise and carry through some wise plan for tax reduction. “Then the house only In the last hour took up the interstate commerce subject 1 came ’ithin au ace of nmkiti; •ent to it by the senate, and by its passing Hartigan?” the Reagan bill practically said that noth- Mr. kike did not take kindly to Jerry’s ing should be done. Ho made A Itmiiiim-e from Coitii. ..nation Times. For parents and near kinsfolk it Is custo mary in Corea to mourn three years. What a deep influence this prescriptive usage has upon the life of the people is illustra t’d by the following story of auaged bach elor who was asked why he had never taken a wife: “My parents, as well as my self,” said he, "were desirous that I should marry, and a suitable young lady being found, our betrothal took place. Then my future father in-law died, and we hud, of course, to wuit three years. I had hardly put off my mourning than 1 had to bewail the loss of my own lather; necessarily here wits another term of three years’ waiting. When these were up the mother of my fu ture wife took siek and expired, and thus we were obliged to delay our mar- iage another three years. Lastly, I had the misfortune to lose my one dear mother, which naturally caused a further adjournment. So that as four times three are twelve, that number of years had pass ed over both of our heads, uud made us both tlie older. At this time my betrothed fell ill, and, ns she was at death’s door, I went to pay her a last visit. My future Wrother-in-law met me at the door and said, ‘although you are not formally mar ried, yet perhaps I may for this once look upon you as man and wife; come in and see her.’ I had hardly entered and been for a moment face to face with my poor wife than she breathed her last. When I; saw this all thoughts of marriage fled from I me, and 1 have remained a bachelor ever ] since.” DUFFY’S 111 Mil WHISKEY AND Duffy’s Raw Beef Formula For WhInrii». 143 Catherine St., Elizabeth, N. In getting into bed one morning in the latter part of June Jerry Hartigan hit a post of his bed with his left shoulder and dislocated his shoulder blade. He was laid up in bed two weeks, and he carries his arm in a sling. He went into Crook's sa loon, on Centre street, on Monday after noon with a number of statesmen. Louis Pike, who sells pianos and puts up at the Hofl'man house, stepped up to the bar and greeted Jerry. Mr. Pike is elegant in his dress, wears patent leather boots, and line long dark hair, twisted in pretty ringlets. “Ye have a foine waterfall, Mr. PoYke,” Jerry remarked. “Upon me sowl I nivir saw the ioike but upon the head of a Lim erick girl I was coortin’ once. I do not think this is a good denfense. The president of the United States was formerly governor of a great state. He took as three of his principal ad visers veteran public men, who certainly cannot be excused for any mistakes on ac count of inexperience. The principal criti cism that I should pass upon this adniin- u motion with his feet that Pike imagined meant fight, and Pike put himself on the defense. “Put down yer hands, ye dancing mas ter,” Jerry yelled, as he closed in and pre pared to crush Mr. Pike’s waterfall against the wall with his head by a process known ns butting. Friends interferred, and Jerry cume to himself and Mr. Pike went away. The governor of Texas, it is said, has tele graphed to the state department at Wash ington that if the federal government does not avenge Mr. Pike Texas will attend to Jerry herself. There has probably been no range of appointments under any of the departments which afforded such tar gets for legitimate criticisms as the appointments of Mr. Bayard.
