ation, lie says, affords him more pleasure i a ^ my own housework. I owe* my
than the actual smoking. Mr. Morrison
never smokes in the house. He makes up
for the sacrifice at Willard’s every evening
however, by smoking straight along from
dinner till 9 or 10 o'clock.
Randall seldom smokes, and when he
does the process seems to give him ex
quisite torture. Ho recognizes the neces
sity ot smoking in order to keep his place
as a great statesman, but the necessity is
disagreeable to him. lie places the cigar
in the middle of his mouth, holds it with
his hand, and occasionally with both, and
is in appearance bent wholly on the effort
to wipe that Havana out of existence.
When half of the distuseful weed has dis
appeared in ashes lie throws it away
viciously, and soon regains his wonted
pleasant exterior. No one lias ever seen
Mr. Randall smoke at the capitol, It is
only when he finds himself up town with
his friends that he makes the sacrifice for
the purpose of maintaining good fellow
ship.
In the senate there are few scientific
smokers. Ingalls will not touch anything
but a accent cigar, and he goes about its
demolition much after the manner of
Reed, only his lank body is incapable of
the abandon which characterizes the posi
tion of the Maine man.
Senator Blackburn is not so particular
about the article to be smoked. A 5-
center will do for him, provided that the
other necessary accessories are at hand.
These accessories are plenty of tables on
which to rest his feet and arms. With
feet elevated above his head and a chair
on each side to toy with he can be happy
with even a two-for-five.
Senator Blair evolves his pension schemes
from the fleecy clouds arising from a quar
ter cigar. He first fills the atmosphere
about him with smoke and then those big
dreamy eyes of his gaze long and earnestly
into the smoky clouds until they have van
ished. Mr. Blair is said to use a dozen
cigars daily. This mild intemperance can
be forgiven him when it is remembered
that he drinks only cold water.

A good arithmetic, to study in order to

railway time-tables.
A stock, of nether garments cool enough

A bottle of Jamaica ginger or a flask of
“something or other” as a precaution
against sudden changes of water.
A watch that doesn’t gain over an

ten minutes every hour going east.
A cheek like adamant, to check the in

A diary in which to enter the incidental
expenses, which will be twice as much as
you calculated before the start.
A well lined pocketbook and numerous

Soothing Syrup should always be used
when children are cutting teeth. It re
lieves the little sufferer at once; it produces
natural, quiet sleep by relieving the child
from pain, and the little cherub awakes as
“bright as a button.” It is very pleasant
to taste. It soothes the child, softens the
gums, allays all pain, relieves wind, regu
lates the bowels and is the best known
remedy for diarrhoea, whether arising
from teething or other causes. Twenty-
five cents a bottle. jel7 d&wly

Everybody knows Gray sells large LINEN TOWELS as cheap as other stores; sells
single Napkins. The talk of the city is, what is Gray going to do, as he is selling out.
Do you note the fears of some, less the rolling stone would move up town. Well, we
are going to make some sell cheap while we are at it.
LOST! LOST! I LOST ! 11
The old phantom ship goes down, loaded with old charge hooks and ledgers, and old fogy ideas
and shop-worn goods. Gray’s war Gup hit it with one of his needle guns and made them heave to.
The missile Urea into her was a large rolling stone, and the last words heard from the captain were,
“Gray, please don’t move up town.” All thesmall fi.-li can do is to murmur. In getting up this re
action in business the public will notice we did not get up the big rush to the Trade Palace by
making a run on cheap cotton goods, but hit the trade right with fine Wool and Linen Goods, so as

steers clear of the rocks, so will he whose price is bent on success avoid maelstroms of high prices,
which have swept whole generations of master minds from affluence to beggary, from greatness and
grandeur to the oblivion of the grave.

The Human Family.
The human family living to-day on earth
consists of about 1,450,000,000 individuals;
not less, probably more. These are dis
tributed over the earth’s surface so that
no5V there is no considerable part where
man is not found. In Asia, where he was
first planted, there are now approximately
about 800,000,000, densely crowded; on an
average, 120 to the square mile. In Europe
there are 320,000,000, averaging 100 to the
square mile; not so crowded, but every
where dense, and at points over-populated.
In Africa there are210,000,000. In America,
North and South, there are 110,000,000, rel
atively thinly scattered and recent. In the
islands, large and small, probably 10.000,-
