Daily Madisonian: 'Governor McDaniel
will retire from office enjoying as little ad
verse criticism as that of any one of his
predecessors. We art- frank to say that
while he did some things we could not
approve, and so stated at the time, that in
the main he has not only made a good but
exceptionally good governor. His fealty
to party cannot be questioned, and his pure
private life and conscientious public acts
nave won for him the admiration and con
fidence of his people.

The belle of the Branch has a black eve.
it might naturally be supposed that such a
sad condition of affairs would interfere
somewhat with her enjoyment of the mid-
summer gayeties of this fashionable resort,
but it has an entirely different effect, and
added to instead of lessened her populari*
ty. No girl ever wore a beauty spot with
i such fascinating grace or carried her dim
pled chin with siich charming hauteur as
1 ‘his merry little maiden from Gotham
does a big patch of black coloring that en
circles her right eye. There isn’t a girl at
! the Branch that doesn’t envy her the dis
tinction that she has gained through it,
and any number of them would take a
black eye to-morrow if they felt sure of
their ability to turn such an unsightly spec
tacle into a badge of beauty and attractive
ness. But it so happened that the particu
lar young lady who owns this injured optic
is just thejolhest sort of a girl imaginable,
and she would probably make ns merry
over nn accident of any kind, ns long as it
didn't keep her away from the boys, as
sire is over her present disaster.
Xogencral ever turned defeat into victory
with so much tact, for instead of spoiling
her summer’s fun it has made her the most
talked about girl at the Branch, and
: brought her conquests by the dozen. She
is never on the porch with less than two
beaux, and there is such a regiment of
! them constantly dancing- attendance upon
her that she can allot to each but a very
I small portion of her time. The accident
I that gave her this badge of beauty oc
curred over at the race-course. She was
! thrown from her carriage, and, while her
companion was painfully injured, she es-
; eaped with a discolored eye and a short
spell of unconsciousness'. “Oh, isn't
this dreadful?” she exclaimed when
I she came to herself. “What
! will the boys say? I can’t go to the dance
to-night!” Just the same when she reach
ed the hotel and held a council of war with
herself she resolved to go to the ball and
risk the danger of humiliation and dismay.
But her very bravo in defying the gossip of
her girl friends turned the tide, in her favor
and her engagement card was filled for
every dance before she had been In the
room a quarter of an hour. Since then
she has been the belle of the hotel. She
goes everywhere and does everything,
from bathing and tennis in the morning to
dancing and a supper over at Pleasure Bay
at night.
At the proprietor’s ball last Thursday at
the West End she appeared in a handsome
oielblue, low cut anu a group of diamonds
glittering in a pendant from her necklace.
The tmiJn-adinired eye was circled with
the usual patch of black; but she had it
1 ainted during the afternoon, and it looke d
very much as if the little witch had spread
the paint much lower than necessary,
just to show that the black was still there.
She says she is going to Saratoga this week,
; and the beaux at the Summer Spa will
have an opportunity to see the only young
woman who has ever made a black eye de
sirable.—Long Branch Letter.
