Hiding horseback across tnc main divide
of the Rockies in that wonderfttl expanse
of the mountains called Montana, 1 came
nl sunset in sight of a flume that ran for
miles nlong tne spurs bordering a barren
valley.
To the south lay an alkali plain, dotted
here and there with hunches of coarse
sedge, nnd heaped with gravel. All around
t hi hills lay piled, with here anil there an
isolated butte, independent of any range
nnd sloping on every side from its bare,
rock peak to the hollows which hemmed
it in. A swampy creek struggled along
the valley. The Boh Jennings ledge, with
tltc ore front which 1 was to try my new
process of amalgamation, nnd
the cabin to which i had
been directed for shelter could
not be far away. The miners of Prickly
I’car Canon hail been none too friendly,
but there had been a cordial unanimity in
t heir recommendation that I pass my
second night out on the journey to the
railroad in “Bob Jennings’ cabin. ’ I was
to know when to look for it by the great
flume. When 1 saw this apparently mi'
ending box of moss-covered plunking my
heart IcaAcd for joy, in spite of the ilesola- I
lion of its surroundings. It must have 1
cost $25,000 or £10,000, and help wash out
liptHircds of thousands of dollars’ worth of
gold dust, fin- it had been built when
every stick of timber hud to be hauled on
wagons for days and days along the famous
Gilmer A Salisbury stage route from Utah
into the mountains.
The whole scene spoke of the romance
of the placer diggings. There were signs

Wa iiinoton, August 31.— One of the
most striking chapters of the democratic
campaign hand hook, n nv in press, will
be that which is devoted to the defalca
tions of republican officeholders. It has
been prepared with great care and much
labor from the official figures, anil makes
a more damaging showing than was even
anticipated. The chapter is headed,
“Opening the books," and vindicates a
promise long made by tin; dem icracy to
tlie people ot the country, it is as follows:
“The democratic party, t hrough its press
nnd by its speakers, declared tor the past
ten years publicly, that if it could turn the
rascals out and get at the hooks they could
demonstrate Unit the republican party, in
its long lease of power, had, through its
various officers, by defalcation in its collec
tions and disbursements, stolen millions of
tin: people’s money. Mr. Tilden, in 187'),
claimed the amount to lie over $5,000,000.
The amount will reach $10,000,000 or
more.”
Under a resolution of the democratic
house, passed January ill, and which was
called up aguin July 27 by the Hon. Ben
ton McMilfin, of Tennessee, just previous
to the adjournment of the forty-ninth con
gress, tilt* acting secretary of the treasury
transmitted, in a letter to the house of rep

which it is shown officially that the bal

of defalcations in disbursements and col

In an hour or two 1 awoke. 1 could hear

the melancholy rustling of the great pines

A horror of silence seized me, and the

an inexpressible relief to my ear. j
imagined the cabin, half roofless’ as it was,
smelt musty, and I carried my blankets

He seemed amused. “1 never slept in

was Rob Jennings' cabin: he was the first

I invited the stranger down from his
