The fall term of Emory college will
begin on October 13.
There seems to be an epidemic of typhoid
fever in Decatur.
The negroes of Oglethorpe county are
registering by the hundred, and It Is
rumored that John Whitehead, colored is
ont for the legislature, and they are'to
support him as one man.
. A littlenegro boy was shot and instant
ly killed at Whigham, in Decatur county,
by George Bellamy, a young white man
There are two reports of the occurrence
One, that the shooting was accidental; the
other, that it was wanton, reckless mur
der. The man left town after the shoot
ing.
Randall Davis, colored, a prisoner in jail
at Sylvania, charged with burglary, was
accidentally shot on Monday in the abdo
men by Willie Mills, son of Sheriff R. T.
Mills. The prisoner was in the corridor
tending to his cell when the shooting was
done. The prisoner puts no blam? on
Mills and says it was purely accidental.
Mr. M. B. Gilmore’s livery stables at
Oglethorpe were burned Monday night
about 8 o’clock, together with four buggies
and harness, 200 bushels of corn and 10,000
pounds of fodder. The loss is about 81200;
insurance $400, with the Phoenix of Lon
don. The cause of the tire is not known
Several horses were badly burned, but ali
were saved.
In the municipal election at Elberton
Hon. George C. Grogan was elected
mayor, receiving 115 votes, and Hon. H. P.
Chandler, his opponent and present in
cumbent, receiving 70 votes with some
scattering. The prohibition candidates
for councilmen were Messrs. D. P,
Oglesby, T. G. Swift, E. A. Cason, J. C.
Swearenger and W. W. Reese. They re-
-eived 156 votes while the conservative
ticket received 40 votes. All the candi
dates on the conservative ticket came
down before the polls were opened but
were voted for by some anyhow. The new
council will prohibit t he sale of domestic
wine by the quart if they have the power
to do so.
Bob Wiggs t the negro suspected of
having committed the assault upon Mrs. :
Anderson Willis, near Rogers station, for '
which DanOdwell was arrested two weeks ;
ago, was captured at Herndon, throe miles j
west of Rogers, on Sunday. He was taken '
to Rogers Saturday night and was idviiti- |
fled by Mrs. Willis as her assailant. Wiggs j
is a powerfully built negro, about twenty-
five years old, and bears a bad reputation, i
He denies having been at Rogers on the I
day the crime was committed, and says I
that he knows nothing about it. Odwell,
who was arrested for the crime, and who
was afterwards lynched at Milieu for j
outraging a little girl, said that j
Wiggs had given him a gun to j
sell, and that he took it to Savannah i
and disposed of it there. The gun has j
been recovered and identified by Mrs. Wil- j
lis as the one which Wiggs took from her |
in her struggle with him. Wiggs has also
been identified by two colored men, who
found him asleep in the woods a short dis
tance from where Mrs. 'Willis lives on the
day of the crime. He had the gun then.
When Odwell was arrested, Wiggs disap
peared, and was not seen until Saturday,
when he was arrested. He denies every
thing, but the evidence stamps him as
guilty of the outrage. He was kept under
close guard at Rogers on Saturday and
Sunday. The excitement is increasing,
and in spite of the guard it is not likely
that the prisoner will escape lynching.

Ust Monday morning the family of Capt. '

himself and two servants, came very near
losing their lives by poisoning. Dr.'' Bou-

Florence and Lillie, and nis little boy John!
r m oook ttnd nurse, were all suffering
te', ! np8 a /- d vomiti »g and purging
Their extremities were cold and gums soft;
1" faot > a 11 the symptoms showed that
taken Uoiaoncna substance had been
et ' into tho stomach. Upon
investigation the doctor found
out that Sunday evening some
floating island” hud been made from
Crown Brand condensed milk, and as
nothing else had been eaten that day that
could have poison in it, and the only per
sons who had not partaken of it, Mrs.
Uuttman and the cook’s husband, were
not anected, it was a reasonable conclusion
to come to that the milk was the cause,
especially as the cases looked like lead
poisoning. Little Blanche and Lilly were
the most seriously affected, and Wednes
day their condition was critical, but all are
now doing well.

Daniel Dozier is the name of the gentle

One day last week while Mr. John H.
Thigpen, a clever and energetic young
farmer, was having two bales of cotton
hauled to the depot at Calhoun, the negro
driver struck a match on one of the hoops
or ties around the cotton to light his pipe,
which ignited both bales instantly, ana
they were about half consumed before the
fire was extinguished. In the meantime
the mules ran away and turned the wagon
over, throwing the body on one ot the
bales, and it was burned entirely up.
A correspondent writing from Union
Springs, under date of Tuesday, says: The
colored Methodist church building in this
city, a handsome structure, is the bone of
of contention between two factions in the
congregation. The matter has been ad
judicated in the courts and possession
vested in the party led by Rev. Cain
Rogers, who is backed by the white Ivort,;-
ern Methodist church. Rev. Cain started
“a series of meetings” last Sunday and iu-
vited all denominations to join in praying
for safety from Wiggins’ earthquake anu
other imminent evils of the times, the
antagonistic faction in the church, led by
Rev. Hilliard, who claims to be ot the
original A. M. E. persuasion, accepted the
invitation so far as lo come lo church,
but declined to take any part in tile
services. On Monday night Inst, alter
the benediction, this silent but disgiuntied
port ion of the worshipers refused to leave
the house at the request of the sexton and
pastor ill charge, Rev. Rogers. The police
were called in and Officer Parker ordered
the interlopers out. They refused to move
or speak, with one accord. Then lie in
structed the sexton to extinguish the
lights and lock the building. Hilliard and
his leading henchmen, with a large num
ber of “sislerin’,” stiil hold the fort, having
remained in the church all of Monday
night in darkness. Citizens living adjacent
have complained to the city authorities
that these ‘squatters” in the church made
the night nideous with noises until 3
or 4 o’clock a. m. At this writing we can
not learn what steps will be taken in the
premises. It is rather a unique situation.
A Masonic lodge will soon lie built in
the Johnson addition to Apopka by the
colored adherents of that order.
A $600 wind mill is to be erected by Mr.
Munn on his hotel grounds at Lakeland,
bringing water from Lake Mirror.
An alarm of fire at Palatka is made the
signal for a fusilade of revolvers all over
town. People are complaining, and tiie
practice will probably be stopped.
