DAILY ENQUIRER • SUN : COLUMBUS, GEORGIA, THURSDAY MORNING OCTOBER 7, J*s6. JK Skeleton Twenty-Nine Year* In a Back Yard. •Mmllng In a Mrtalllr Ca»kM Ahovi> h» (iron nil In Hi, Vary Hear* ofThl* City—A Wealthy fulian Whoae lllatnry Haa Bart Forjottfa. .7*ow Orleans Times-Democrat. How numerous arc the mysteries that lie wound us in life, awaiting only the mate rializing hand of time and circumstances •to render them things of fait and history. “Bury the dead,’’ was one of the Injunc tions of the Saviour to man, and ft has been religiously and scrupulously re spected by all nations and people since. No matter what ties may have existed be tween the living and the. dead —how sacred <ir how precious, when life is extinct, the mortal remains regardless of beauty that ‘decays effacing lingers” may yet have deft untouched, arc borne to the grave, where nffection gives expression to grief in many beautiful and costly mementoes. Herein the city of New Orleans this is ■especially the case. Its cemeteries nre among the loveliest and most attractive in the world, and there Is none so poor, or Jowly, or so friendless or homeless that -cannot secure a home in one ofthem. And .yet, strange to say, there has been an ex ception to this beautiful rule of humanity. For twenty-nine years a casket contain ing the body of a human being has lain in an outhouse in the rear of what was once an undertaking establishment, No. 37 Marais street, between Customhouse and Bienville. ' For many years the placo was presided over by (1. Casanave, colored, who died in this city about twelve months ago. The building is one-story frame cottage of dilapidated ap pearance, and untenanted. It has an ex tensive court yard, a portion of which is now occupied as stable property.. The blocks of granite with which it was at one time paved have been torn up and scat tered promiscuously about the premises, and the whole presents a most woeful ana uninviting aspect. The outhouse in which the casket hud lain for so long a period was torn down a few days since for some reason or other,so that the human recep tacle is n >w exposed to the elements and the vision of the people occupying second story apartments in houses situated in the imniedmtc neighborhood. When seen by a Timos-Democrnt reporter yesterday it rested in a corner near a high fence, but fully exposed to the vulgar gaze. The casket is six and a half feet ill length, according to actual measuremem, and of east iron the eighth of an inch thick. It is oval in shape, with eight elab orately patterned handles, four to n side, end the whole bears evidence of being in »‘ts day one of the handsomest of that character of manufacture. It contains no scroll plate, and in fact nothing to indicate the identity of the remains within. The face plate, however, can easily be removed, but a glance within fails to extricate re membrance from the handful of sacred dust thus encased. A shattered skull, bones, and remnants of faded garments are all that remains to tell the tale of life and death. The casket, although devoid of all its wonted polish, which has give - ' to rust and inevitable decay, is yeti Bully’s Pure Halt Whiskey mmd Duffy’s Formula. For Dynpoptvta And Indigestion. The homo of the dead passed away with the undertaker. All that is known at this time of the deceased is that he was in lifo si gentleman by birth nnd education—a Cuban of considerable wealth, who had a Taste for traveling. While making a tour of Italy lie died there, and his remains were shipped to (1. Casanave for interment in New Orleans. It is stated that the agent, to whom the money necessary to defray the expenses of burial, etc., Imd been soul, decamped, leaving toe remains in the hands of the undertaker, to whom lie was indebted to no little extent. Casanave, it appears, from his daughter’s statement, informed the relatives of the deceased in Cuba as to what hud occurred, and they answering requested him to hold the remains until they should make a de mand on him for them. Hence the body bus never been interred, but lias remained just where it is to be seen to-day for more than twenty-nine vears. d PoTleux Turncil l» Cluj. Boston Record. A Boston lady who returned from the White mountains Inst, woek told the ■Historian about au interesting experience That she had when she went there. She was greatly taken on the train going to the mountains with a young woman on The scat in front of her, who was in form, in fuee, in bearing, a veritable Juno. Dur ing the long ride she built many airy cas tles of imagination around the form of this igod-like young person. She tried her on iis a society queen, but she looked rather Too sweet and unworldly to lie that. Stic tried her as a countess traveling in the United States, but she didn’t seem exactly foreign. The lady couldn’t make anything else of her than a princess an idem princess traveling incognito. By and by her sojourning place was reached and what was her dclignt to see j the beautiful young woman alight and go ! to the hotel Where she herself slopped. “ Now 1 shall have an opportunity to know her, perhaps, or find out who she is,” said the lady to herself. So it is with many eompetitors that cannot keep up with the great march of When Gray secured that large bankrupt stock, and amazed the public of Columbus and vicinity by the quality of tlie goods, and the prices, intermingled with such crowds that only can lie seen at the Trade Palace, such boasting and pleading was never heard before, by some so-called first- class merchants, in their vain endeavor to catch a few cus tomers a day to come in their stores, in order to keep them up in spirits and hopes. Until Gray gets through selling out their bankrupt stock, and not have a meteor, like Mark Twain’s, descend upon them—well, unless some change their way of doing business, Gray’s meteor, charged with public indignation at high prices, will pay them a call soon.
