DAILY ENQUIRER ■ SUN: COLUMBUS, GEORGIA, WEDNESDAY MORNING, OCTOBER US, 1886. GENERAL STONEWALL JACKSON. Ills |,||si Itiilllc llwrlliiMl In dll' Ol'liilicr (e tun Ills I,list (ONI III Mill I'lMIII III'' Field. (■aptnin Janv s Power Smith deHcrilies fttoncwnll .hu h i.'- ' t battle in the Oc tober Century. “When .JaokHon Imd reached tlm point where his line now cross. d the turnpike, scarcely a mile west of Chaneeliorsvilie, and not half a mile from a line of federal troops, he hud found his front line unfit for the farther and tim orous advance he desired, by reason of the Irregular chaiaeter ot the lighting, now right, now left, and because of the dense thickets, through which it was Impossible to preserve alignment. Division com manders found it more and more difficult, as i lie twilight deepened to held their broken brigades in hand. Regretting the necessity of re lieving the troops in front, General Jack- son had ordered A. I’. Hill's division, his third and reserve line, to be placed in front. While thin change was hei gelfect- ed, Impatient and anxioustbe general rode forward on the turnpike, followed by two or three of his stall' and a number of couriers and signal sergeants, lie passed the swampy depression and began the ascent of the hill toward Chaneellorsviile, when lie came upon a line of federal in fantry lying on their arms. Fired at by one or two muskets (two musket Drills from the enemy whistled over my head us I came to the front), ho turned and came back toward his line, upon the side of the road to iiis left. As he rode near to the con federate troops just placed in position, and ignorant that ho was in the front, the left company began firing to the front, and two of his party fell from their sad dles dead—Captain Boswell, of the engi neers. and Sergeant Cunliffu, of the signal corps. Spurring his horse across the road to his right, ho was met by u second volley from the right company of Pender’s North Carolina brigade. Under this volley, when not two rods from the troops, the general received three bnils at the same Instant. One penetrated the palm of his right hand ami wits cut out thut night at the back of his hand. A second passed around the wrist of the left arm and out through the left hand. But a third ball passed through the left arm half-way from shoulder to elbow. Thu large bone of the upper arm was splintered to the elbow joint, and the wound bled freely. His horse turned quickly from the (Ire, througli tho thick bushes, which swopt the cap from the general’s head and scratched his fore head, leaving drops of blood to stain Ids face. As he lost his hold upon (he bridle- rein, lie reeled from the saddle and was caught by the arms of Capt. Milbourne of the signal corps. T.aid upon the ground, there canto ut once to his succor Uen. A. P. Hill and members of bis staff. The writer reached his side n minute after, to find Gun. Hill holding the head and shoulders of the wounded chief'. Cutting open the coat sleeve from wrist to shoul der, I found the wound in Lhe upper arm, and with my handkerchief I hound the arm above the wound to stem the Mow of blood. Couriers were sent for Dr. Hunter McGuire, the surgeon of the corps and the general’s trusted friend, and for an ambulance. Being out side of our lines, it was urgent that he should be moved at once. With difficulty litter-bearers were brought from the line near by, the general placed upon the litter, and carefully raised to the shoulder, 1 my self bearing one corner. A moment after, artillery from t he federal side was opened upon us; great broadsides thundered over the woods; hissing shells searched the dark thickets through, and shrapnels swept the road along which we moved. Two or three steps farther, and the litter-bearer at my side was struck and fell, but as the litter turned Maj. Watkins Heigh of Hill’s staff happily caught it. But tho iright, of the men was so great thut we were obliged to lay the litter and its burden down upon the roud. As tlio litter-bearers ran to the cover of tho trees I threw myself by the general’s side and held him firmly to the ground as he attempted to rise. ' Over us swept the rapid tire of shot and shell—grape shot striking live upon the flinty rock of the road all around us, and sweeping from their feet horses and men of tho artillery just moved to tho front. Soon the firing veered to the other side of the road, and I sprang to my feet, assisted the general to rise, pasted my arm around him, and with the wounded man’s weight thrown heavily upon me we for sook the road. Entering the woods ho sank to the ground from exhaustion’ but the litter was soon brought, and again ral lying a few men we essayed to curry him further, when a second bearer fell at my side. Thistlme.witli none to assist, the litter careened and the general fell to the ground with a groan of deep pain. Greatly alarmed, I sprang to lii.s head, and, lifting his head ns n stray beam of moonlight came through clouds and leaves, lie open ed his eyes and wearily said: ‘Never mind me, captain; never mind me.’ Raising him again to his feet, he was accosted by Brigadier-General Pender: ‘Oh, general, l hope you are not seriously wounded. 1 will have to retire my troops to reform them, they are so much broken by this tire.’ But Jackson, rallying his strength, with firm voice said: ‘You must hold your ground, (leu. Pender; you must hold your ground, sir I’and so uttered his last com mand on the field." DRIVER ANTS. Iiisi'i-In From Whit'll llairi' Animals Flap. St. Nicholas, There are certain nuts that show won derful intelligence, and tho “driver ants" i not only build bouts but launch them, too; only these boats are formed to their own | bodies. They are called “drivers” because of their ferocity. Nothing can stand be fore the attacks of these little creatures. Large pythons have been killed by them in a single night, while chickens, lizards, and other animals iu western Africa flee from them in terror. To protect them selves from the heat they erect arches under which numerous armies of them pass in safety. Sometimes the arch is made of grass and earth gummed together by some secretion, and again it is formed by tile bodies of the larger ants, which hold themselves together by their strong nippers while the workers puss under them. At certain times of the year freshets overflow the country inhabited by the "drivers.” and it is then that these ants go to sea. The rain comes suddenly, and the walls of tlieir houses are broken in by the flood, but instead of coming to the surface In scattered hundreds and being swept oil' to destruction, out of the ruins rises a black Dull that rides safely on the water and drifts away. At the first wurniug of danger the little creatures rush together and form a solid ball of nuts, the weaker in the center; often the ball is larger than a common base ball, and in this way they flout about until they lodge against some tree, upon the branches of which they are soon safe and sound. Deserving of L'onfbltmce. There is no article which so richly de serves the entire confidence of the com munity as Brown’s Bronchial Troches.
