DAILY ENQUIRE!? • SUN, COLUMBUS, GEORGIA, THURSDAY MORNING, OCTOBER U, lflfifi, .3 News from the Three States Told in Brief Paragraphs. (;in llouwR Burned—Flue Fimuhur In Douglass rounly—Cold*Blo«dj*d Murder—A Sail Arrltleid. A Still Against Kolnin for 84SOO, EU*. Georgia. Sumter county farmers say the cotton crop will be much shorter than was ex pected even a month ago. The season is favorable for picking. Mr. G. D. Hayes, of Schley county, made 144 bushels of corn on four acres ol' land this year. This is an average of 38* bush els to the acre. Nally, of Connor’s district, Doug las county, is said to be the best farmer in the county. He made, this year, 1294 bushels of oats to one acre and has ten acres of cotton that will make twenty bales. Mr. Wiley Milan, of Stockbridge, had his gin house burned last week. There were between three and four bales of cot ton in the house. Harriet McKniglit, a negro woman, was arrested on circumstan tial evidence and bound over in a £500 bond. A prohibition council has been elected in Ellijay. An interesting railroad meeting was held Tuesday night at LaUrange, at which a subscription list of $25,000 was raised. This money was raised for the purpose of build- , ing the Monticello, Griffin and LaGrange ! road. The surveying corps is actively engaged in locating the eastern extension of the Americas, Preston and Lumpkin railroad, from Americus to Abbeville, Wilcox county. The gin house, screw, mill house, mill, press and engine of George M. McNeil, living near Americus, was destroyed by tire Monday morning, together with eight bales of cotton, two line gins and all the cotton seed of the present crop. The gins were running nt the time of the fire, which originated from a spark from the engine. The estimated loss is about $1000 on which, if is said, there was no insurance. Beverly Evans, of Washington county, will be the youngest member of the next general assembly. A cold-blooded murder was perpetrated within the corporate limits of Oglethorpe during Monday night by Tom Baisdon on the person of Albert Thomas, both color ed. The killing took place at the house of Arlalir.e Ellis, wheye Baisdon was living and Thomas was visiting. There was no one at the house at the time of the killing but a small negro child and the above mentioned negroes. It seems that Thomas had retired for the night and was asleep when Baisdon, ( procuring a rope and making a running noose, put it around Thomas’ neck, and by choking and blows over the head with a hoe handle, succeed ed in killing the old man. When the alarm was given, Baisdon stated the old man had died with colic, but the coroner’s jury had evidence sufficient to justify them in ren dering a verdict of murder at the hands of Baisdon. AI ill)Hum. A curiosity in the shape of a full-grown white buzzard has been seen frequently of late on Capt. Troup Randall’s prairie plan tation near Union Springs. Chicago Herald. . . “Are there any full-bearded men on the municipal ticket this fall?” asked u Fifth avenue barber as he ran his razor over the chin of a customer. “1 couldn’t say,” replied the man in the chair. “But why do you ask ?” “Oh, because if there are you can bet they’re going to be out.” “By the barber?” “The same.” “But how ?” “Same way we cut Blaine in 1884. He wore a full beard, and we (the barbcrsl voted against him at the polls. That’s why he lost. There are 12,OCX) barbers in New York state, and if Blaine had not had a full beard he’d caught enough of their votes to have carried the state.” “But why do you cut candidates with full beards?” “Because it’s part of our creed to vote against men who never patronize our shops. See?” 1- rco Trade. The reduction of internal revenue and the taking off of revenue stamps from Pro- j prietary Medicines, no doubt has largely I benefited the consumers,as well ns relieving the,' burden of home manufacturers. Es pecially is this the case with Green’s Au gust Flower and Boschee’s German Syrup, as the reduction of thirty-six cents per dozen, has been added to increase the size of the bottles containing these remedies, thereby giving one-fifth more medicine in the 75 cents size., The August Flower for Dyspepsia and Liver Complaint, and the German Syrup for Cough and Lung trou bles, have perhaps, the largest sale of any medicines in the world. The advantage of increased size of the bottles will be greatly appreciated by the sick and afflicted, in every town and village in civilized coun tries. This cut is an illustration of Improved Iron Ncrew 4'olton l'l’CNN,” , erected in the most substantial and convenient manner. If is simple in construction, and ho well illustrated by tlie cut, that scarcely a word is needed by way of explanation. Being simply an , Iron Nrrew an<l IViil substituted for wood, tlie wood work of its construction, and the manner , of operating it, are substar stantially the same as in the old style of wooden plantation screw, but the timbt rs required are not so heavy or long. Most planters of experience prefer t he wooden screw to any of the more modern Cotton Presses in use, but the difficulty and uncertainty of controlling Libor and mechanical skill in the season of the year most convenient to the planter for their erec* I tion, usually renders it a matter of economy, as well as necessity, with him, to buy some kind of ; Press that requires but little mechanical skill to put it in operation. “(Joldeii'H Nerew,” is a sort of compromise between the old style of wooden screw and the modern Cotton Press, combining ! the principal advantages of the former with the convenience and economy of t he latter. It can be i operated with greater facility than the wooden screw, and the rapidity of its performance, like that [ of tlie wooden screw, or any other press, depends upon its management as on the old style screws j j some planters would pack ten bales, and others thirty or thirty-five hales per day. Any ordinary j j mechanic who can make a good plantation gate, or common plow stock, can do the wood work. Within tlie last eleven years we have made and sold a great many of these screws, and have yet J | to hear of the first one that has not given entire satisfaction.
