The young men of Elberton are organ
izing a library association. A temporary
organization has been perfected with if
view of organizing permanently next
week.
Colonel A. S. Hamilton, of Jones county
died at 4 p. m. Tuesday. Colonel Hamilton
was highly connected and well known in
middle Georgia. He had several horses
in training for the state fair.
Kev. Leonard Woolsey Bacon, of Nor
wich, Conn., has been invited to Savannah
by the congregation of the Independent
Presbyterian church, with a view to being
engaged ns pastor of said church.
Savannah, on Monday, received 12 894
bales of cotton, the largest receipts in one
day in the history of the port. The stock
on hand Tuesday was l00,5fi0 bales, the
largest ever recorded in one day in Octo
ber.
Tenk Rather, a white man living near
the line of De-atur in Mitchell county,
was accussed of stealing some money from
Elias N. Smith, a man he was living with.
During the latter part of last week lie was
seized by six men with blackened faces
and hung to the limb of a tree until life
was almost extinct. They tried to extort
a confession of guilt, but failed.
W. A. Davis, a merchant of Whigham,
has assigned to Zim Truluck, of the same
place. His liabilities are about 820,000.
Assets equal. Messrs. Guriev and Talbert
and D. A. Rupeil, representing creditors,
have filed a bill and obtained a restraining
order, preventing the. assignor from sell
ing, and allege fraud in the assignment.
Judge Bower will hear the case at Album-
on the 23d inst.
An accidental killing occurred near
Clayton, in Tennessee valley, bv one of Pat
Dickson’s sons killing the other. They
seemed to have been playing, aiid the
older, 11 years old, was walking a little in
front of the younger, who was eight years
old. The elder had a knife open in his
hand, and was slinging his hand,
when the younger ran up behind
the older and was accidentally stabbed in
the right breast. The cut was about two
inches deep. The boy lived half an horn'
Five persons confined in the Irwinton
jail broke out Monday night. Two of
them, Charles Mason and Willis Holman,
took flight, while the other three hurried
to tire sheriff’s residence, aroused him
from sleep and informed him that they
were out. They waited till lie could dress,
and then, good-naturedly, accompanied
him back to the jail, where they were
again locked up. Mason is the negro
charged with robbing the postofHco at
Griswoldville, and shooting another negro
in Gordon.
In Bowden an altercation occurred be
tween Judge Shelnutt and W. A. Wright,
two merchants, during which Judge Shel-
uutt received a painful stab in the left
arm, near the shoulder, which bled for
sometime. The difficulty occured just
about Judge Shelnutt’s front door. Mr.
Wright had gone into Judge Shelnutt’s to
see him on some business. They came
walking up from the back end of the
house, and reached the front door, when
the difficulty took place. Judge Shelnutt
has sworn out a warrant, charging Mr.
Wriirht with assault with intent to
murder.

Mr. Jonah Keith, of Geneva, has lost his
steam mill by fire, and it is a large loss,
not less than £1000.
Mr. W. A. Smith, the newly appointed
tax collector of Chilton county, has riled
his bond, taken tire oath of office, and
commenced the collection of taxes.
Mr. John S. Powers, of Carthage, Ilalc
county, had the misfortune to haVe his
left arm terribly mangled by a gin, though
it is not thought amputation will be nec
essary.
Mr. Jas. T. Hayes, of Union Springs, has
been arrested in Meridian, Miss., under a [
warrant sworn out by D. S.antry, charging i
Hayes with stealing from himflOO. Hayes’ !
friends claim that lie is the victim of a
scheme to blackmtfil him.

T ie Seottsboro Citizen learns that a man
named Haley, of Texas, was found hanging
to a tree in' the neighborhood of South
Pittsburg a few days ago. Ho went to
South Pittsburg about two months ago,
and, after spending a few days there, dis
appeared, and it was supposed he had re
turned home. The body was fully identi
fied as that of the missing Texan. Suicide
is the accepted theory in the neighbor
hood.
The Valley Head correspondent of the
Fort Payne Journal say3 the wife of Mr.
Rufus Maxwell committed suicide a few
days ago, by cutting her throat with a
razor. She had been affected with attacks
of melancholia mania occasionally, for two
or three years, and during those attacks
would wander off from her home. The
family has kept her under watch gener
ally, but she procured a razor while the
family were temporarily absent, and going
out under an apple tree, committed the
deed of self-destruction. She was about
66 years old, and leaves a husband and
several children.

The tax payers of Clay county will be re
quired to contribute, in all. the sum of -£20,.
437.22, of which the state takes $0741.12-
The total valuation is $1,648,407.
The fishermen of Pensacola held a meet
ing Wednesday night in the hall on the
corner of Palafox and Zarugossa streets;
and formed themselves into a Fisherman s
Protective Association.
The orange groves about San Mateo are
.reported in the best possible condition.
B. F. Crosby Saturday shipped twenty
boxes of the early variety. G. W. Lyle
has increased his order for boxes to more
than 5000, and H. R. Lyle will have 4000
boxes this year, an increase of 800 boxes
over the crop of last year.
Information from a few grove owners
around Orlando is to the effect that scale
is appearing on a few trees, probably irom
eggs which were not destroyed last win
ter. Most of the groves are entirely tree ot
scale, and it is probable that if vigorous
measures were resorted to at once the
state might be entirely rid of this insect.
A petition is being circulated in Pensa
cola asking President Cleveland to pardon
Joseph Hernandez, who was convicted
some time since of taking money from
registered letterswhile actingas route agent
of the railway mail service. The petition
is receiving the signatures of many intiu-
ential citizens, and Hernandez’s friends
hope it will secure his release.
A young man calling himself Samuel
Sinclair was before Judge Rerdell, at Or
lando, on Tuesday, charged with stealing
money from B. B". Campbell. He is also
accused of passing a number of bogus
drafts, and the circumstances indicate that
