The Elberton cotton beed oil mills, with all its machinery, will he sold at public sale on the tirst Tuesday in November. P. A. Fluker’s gin house at Woodstock, twelve miles north of Union Point, was burned to the ground Tuesday night. Tuesday night about 9 o'clock, in Mar- shalville, Are destroyed the crib and con tents and several stables of Mrs. George H. Slappey. About 900 bushels of eoru, just gathered, was destroyed. Mr. E. Y. Hill, of Wilkes county, has just gathered a seven acre tleld of corn which measured up forty bushels to the acre. Mr. James W. Worthen will gather eighteen bales of cotton from a one-horse farm. H. B. Bronson, of Berrien county, has in his possession a fumily Bible winch has been in use ever since the year 1766. It has in it the handwriting of four generations of the Bronsons. lie also has a watch equally as old. The ladies of Baldwin county have pre sented Judge D. B. Sanford, the ordinary, with a handsome silver waiter, in recogni tion ot his action in declaring the recent local option election in favor of the prohi bitionists. The presentation address was made by Judge Fleming DuBignon. Rev. James Shackelford, of Flowery Branch, in company with Elisha Craig and J. T. Whitener, miners, have discovered and opened a rich gold mine, eight miles south of Gainesville on the Bester Allen old place, on Mud creek, in Hail county. The parties think that with proper machinery they can average a pound of ? ;old per day. The prospect, with no urijher developments than have already been made, is worth the handsome sum of f30,000. Some time since a negro was plowing a mule in a Held near Sir. B. J5. Williams, who lives in the upper edge of Oglethorpe, when the bind foot of the animal broke through the earth, and it sunk to its haunches. With difficulty it was whipped out. The plowman examined the place where the mule sank, and found a deep and black chasm with a distant sound of water rushing at the bottom. Since that time the earth has continued to cave in around the hole inane by the mule, until the mouth of the hole is now the size of a room. A number of parties have ap proached the edge, and bv looking down discovered a cave in, shaped like a pot fifty feet deep with a large underground stream running through it. It is a mystery that no one as yet has been found brave enough to explore. Alaliumn. W. B. Brooks, who married one wife in Lake Providence, Louisiana, and another in Raymond, Mississippi, is in the guard house in Mobile, charged with bigamy. Major H. H. Armstrong, the senior part, ner of the prominent firm of R. T. & H. II- Arm3trong, of Notasulga, died this morn, ing at 8 o’clock, at the advanced age of 76- years, from the shock of a surgical opera tion for strangulated hernia. Col. A. S. Colyar was elected Wedesdpy f iresident of the Sheffield Coal, Land and ron Company to succeed W. S. Gordon, deceased. The company have subscribed f 25,000 to the capital stock of the Atlanta, lississippi and Atlantic railroad. Only n linin'. Game seems to have become discourng- ingiy scarce in Kentucky. The gin, all the ma chinery and five bales of cotton were also burned and completely destroyed. A fire broke out in the charcoal shed at tached to No. 2 furnace of the Woodstock Iron and Steel Company, at Anniston, at 2 a. m. of the 18th instant, which causes a loss of about £15,000, with insurance to the amount of £2000. The fire was not con trolled till the close of the day. At a meeting of stockholders of the Alabama State Bank at Birmingham it was determined to increase the capital stock from £200,000 to £500,000, and aiso to at once have the bank changed into a na tional bank, under the name of the Ala bama National Bank. Within an hour after it was known what the stockholders had done the stock was all taken. The continued evening services inaugu rated at Tuskaloosa last week by the Rev. Alonzo Monk, of the Methodist church, have developed into the greatest religious revival known there in forty years. The whole city, fegardless of church denomina tions, is moved from centre to circum ference. At the hour appointed for services all business houses, including the leading saloons, close doors. The negro who attempted to rape Mrs. Jernigan, at Kirkland, in Escambia county, was arrested at Repton and taken back to Kirkland and identified by the lady. In his effort to escape Wednesday evening he was shot and will probably die. Tueseay night, at Broken Arrow, Mr. B. F. Carter, a mail agent on the East and West railroad, accidentally shot and killed Mr. W. J. Richards, a fireman on the same road. Carter is an expert in the use of a pistol, and was in the act of demonstrating a certain way of offering his pistol to Rich ards, and at the same time was holding it, when it was accidentally discharged, the ball piercing the breast of Richards near the heart and causing instant death. Both are young men of good habits and the event is universally deplored. Richards was the support of a widowed mother and a family of small children, who reside at Cedartown. * Florida. Twenty-five boxes of oranges were ship- id to Cincinnati from Bartow at one time r express last week. John Steele, of Brooksville, went driving i Tuesday last and jumped a deer, which ; killed, within three miles of that town. At the primary election held in Fort yerson Wednesday to nominate a candi- ite for the assembly, P. O. Knight re ived 53 votes, Robert Lily 24, C. \\. iompson 17. Horatio Crain has forwarded to Governor irry his resignation of the office of coun superintendent of schools for Monroe, ke effect December 31, 1886, because he .nnot afford to take the time from his isiness which he considers requiste and scessary for the faithful and efficient dis- targe of the duties of the office. At Key West, McDermott & Higgs com- enced a building Thursday 40 feet front id 140 feet in length, three stones high, r Mr. Waddell. The building will be ed as a cigar factory, and is situated near e old street railroad station at the Um- d States garrison.
