This army of Watchers on election day is n heavy ex pense. Thu aggregate vote is about 200,- 000, and it costs $4000 to merely mail u sot of ballots to each voter. The maintenance of genera! headquarters is chargeable to the party fund, and so are certain incident al outlays, but the orators, banners, fire works and other incitements belonging to Out-door meetings are customarily pro vided by separate political clubs, candi dates andjintcrests; what n.'o regarded as honest expenditures are here considered. The direct purchase of votes is a matter of speculation, and is by no means so com ■non ns in some rural districts. When done at all it is practiced in parts of the town where personal character Is iowo t. The biggest assessment ever paid to a party by a candidate was taken by John Kelly, for Tammany, from John Keilty. the present register, and it was $50,000. The office was then worth us much as that annunlly for two years in fees, but has since been reduced to a salary. The usual price lias been $25,000. The county clerk ship was assessed the same; and the shriev alty $50,000. But sonic of the canvasses have been vastly extravagant to the par ticipants through oiMputsof money beyond the regular contribution to the party fund. It is computed that Mayor Grace spent S 100,000 in his last campaign, and not mativ ollars were wasted, for ho conducted his own political bureau, and would not let the strikers fool him too much, lb Henry Dugro olfered to Tammany $100,000 for the mayoralty nomination which bus been given to Abram S. Hewett, but the leaders aid not think he could lie elected indc pendently, uiid so went into a fusion with the rest of tho-demoeracy. Dugro is very rich and ambitious Roswell !’. Flower Would have spent as much us that if the labor party hwl nominated him instead of George, liis liberality in remarkable. He donated $30,000 to the Cleveland fund mid 125,000 to the election of Hill for Governor. Ho spent $50,000 to boat Willie Astor for Congress. In the present re maskable struggle fur the mayoralty, Theodore Roosevelt and Abrtim S. Hewitt are wealthy, and yet the campaign will not cost them wonderfully. Hewitt’s assessment is only $10,000, ami it is doubtful if he will spend an equal sum individually. Roosevelt has paid in a like amount to his party treasury. Hewitt’s election is doomed certain, and Roosevelt’s hopeless. Hence there is no call for money in big quantities. The bulk ofthecuni- ■ftaign fund will be got from the candidates for lower but more remunerative offices. With Hewitt and Roosevelt the nomina tions sought the men. Rut if Henry George’s chances should become promis ing. through the adherence of Irving Hall, or by means of that fealty which the trades unions liuve promised to him. then Hewitt could reasonably be expected to thrust his hand deep into ids well-filled wallet. In the ease of George, reliance is placed on flic unionists to do gratis the work which regulur political parties have to pay for, and the comparatively small necessary expenses are met by assessments on the uni ns. Ho pays the bills of his own activity in stumping and other forms electioneering. Probably be will thus get rid of $1000. Should he lie elected, not the least of the wonders of it will be tluit it Was done without a fat fund. Six Ontt-Hiio I'liNliliin .lots. Few short draperlcsBre seen on fall frocks.
