i ■ , DAILY ENQUIRER SUN: COLUMBUS, GEORGIA, WEDNESDAY MOUSING, NOVEMBER 3, 18 U A FAMILY uF GUM CHEWERS. Tliolr .lnw» Arc >'«cr »t Iti'Ht Kxocpt When The, Arc Mccpl«fi>-lt Tonic riicm Jlnncj. A H13tings (Minn.) spucinl says: Amor, the arrivals in this neighborhood from tu east last spring was a family of gaunt, loi, rj leggod, tnia-chested, ruvv-boned peop.. named Ida, who came from Vermin, They bought a farm about four miles we- ■of hero and settled down to get a live . out of the soil. Last Monday Henry Idr the oldest son of the family and the gaunt est and thinnest legged of them all, drove up to the general ntoro ot Q. VV. Denny, in tnii town, with sixteen bushels of No. 1 hard wheat to se'l. After some UttledtuK- ering about the price, seventy cents was Anally decided upon, the whole amounting to #11.20. "N w is there anything in the Btoro you would like to have in the way of trade V said Mr. Denny, when this result had been reached. "Got any gum ?” asked Henry. “Oh, yes. We have several kinds of gum.” "I guess I’ll take it out in gum, then.” said Henry. "Pretty near outat the house and we don't want to buy any more for a month, anyway.” When Denny had recovered from this staggering demand, he went into the store and began to gather together all the gum in the establishment. He says that i y throwing in all the spruce, tolu, arable rubber, tragacanth and every other kii.d of gum in the store, just stopping short of a pair of gum boots, and by charging re tail prices for the gum and wholesale f, r the wheat, he just managed to make #11.20 ■worth of gum, with which the lean and -delighted Henry went away. Mr. Denny’s curiosity was so much aroused by this singular transaction taut he determined to visit and learn more about a family that bought #11.20 worth of gum at a time. He went out a day or two after Henry’s purchase and he reports a curious state of things existing in the Ide household. The entire family, he says, ■chew gum as long as their jaws can wag. When they sit down to a meal each one ■tak s a big quid of gum out of his mouth and plasters it up on the wall behind him. 'The moment the repast is over, each one reaches tor his gum and begins chewing again. The ceilings of the house are cov ered with old quids that the children have thrown up there in sport and he estimated that he saw as much us a bushel lying around in corners and under tables. The family consists of the father, mother and ■■six children, the youngest only three years old, and they all chew gum—harder, faster and more untiringly than two train loads of Vassar girls could. The old lady told him most of the family went to sleep with their gum in their mouths and she believed some of them chewed in their sleep. No ■one ever thought of leaving the house on an errand without a plentiful supply of the indispensable article, and once when the supply ran out iu harvest time work had to be suspended until one of the boys could ride into town and get some. The childrens, she said, had practised at it so long that they could chew all day without having to stop to rest more than once or twice. Their extraordinary indulgence seems to have produced no marked effect upon the family, and except their exceed ing lankuess and an air of constitutional ■weariness there is nothing strange in their appearance. The old man told Denny he thought it cost him more than #150 a year for guin. Brace Up. You are feeling depressed, your appetite is poor, you are bothered with headache, you are fldgetty, nervous and generally out of sorts, and want to brace up. Brace up, but not with stimulants, spring medicines, or bitters, which have for their basis very cheap, bad whisky, and which stimulate . you for an hour, and then leave you in worse condition than before. What you want is an alterative that will purify your blood, start healthy action of liver and kidneys, restore your vitality, and give re newed health and strength. Such a medi cine you will find in Electric Bitters, and only 50 cents a bottle at Brannon & Car- son’B Drug Store. eod&w A l.ucky Broker. New York Telegram. George B. Green, grain-broker and member of the produce exchange, has earned the right to call himself the lucky man. Yesterday a dealer in diamonds en- , tered the produce exchange building and offered to raffle a diamond pin at #1 a chance. The brokers were in/ the mood for sport, and as ready to speculate in 'diamonds as in grain. So they put up #1 each on the chance of getting the pin. Mr. Green proved to be the holder of the lucky number and the pin was awarded to him. Then the dealer offered a diamond ring of the same value, upon the same terms, and a hundred or more members risked 11 each upon the chance. Green -said he would not enter this time, but give the other boys a chance, but finally admitted that though he had a diamond pin he had not another dollar in his pocket. At that moment a score of brokers offered to lend him the money He ac- cepfced a dollar from one and matched it with another broker. He won, paid back his loan and then bought a chance in the raffle for the ring. To his surprise, for the . second time he was winner, and the ring was allotted to him. A MOST LIBERAL OFFER. The Voltaic Belt Co., Marshall, Mich., offer to send their celebrated Voltaic Belts and Electric Appliances on thirty days* trial to any man afflicted with Nerv ous Debility, Loss of Vitality, -lanhood, n._ tu j .-.Ulrtf in iioqIpH An* tilted backward; no letter very mucii >> r “i in neighbor, nor with heads mu* move or tails much below the letters so d . tinguished—the letters all having about tl t same general uprightness, and the lin* s true to the edges of the paper, neith* tending upward nor downward. Exu. , business-like people will have an exn t handwriting. Fantastic minds revel i quirks and streamers, particularly for TN- capital letters, and this quality is not . - frequent in certain business hands, as if t k writers found a relief from the prussic n i ture of their work in giving flourishes to certain letters. Firm, decided, downright men are apt to beat on the pen whil, vvri- •mg. and to make their strokes hard and oii-k. On the contrary, people who are 4 not sure of tuemselvcs and are lacking in self-control press unevenly and with anx ious-looking, soratchy hands. Ambitious people are apt to be overworked. They are always in haste and either forget to cross their t’s or dot their i's. They are also apt to run the last few letters of every word into an Illegible scrawl. Flurried, troubled, and oonscicnce-twinged persons have a crabbed and uneven handwriting. M other’s Friend Not only shortens the time of labor and lessens the in tensity of pain, but it great ly diminishes ihe danger to life of both mother and child and leaves the mother in a condition highly favorable to speedy recovery, nnd fur less liable to Hooding, Con vulsions, and other alarming symptoms incident to slow or painful labor. Its wonder ful efficacy in this respect entitles it to be called The Motheu’s Fripnd and to be ranked as one of the life saving remedies of the nine teenth century. I saw a novel kind of riding habit up at the school the other day. It was the most sensible and comfortable of anything I have ever seen a woman wear in riding. First, knee breeches buttoning close be low the knee. Then high-topped boots, also buttoned closely to the leg over the breeches and above the knee. Over all .this was worn a coat like a coachman’s close fitting ulster, buttoned far enough down to hide the figure only, and left free to fall to the left foot, and fastened by loops and buttons down the inside of the left coat tail to the inside of the left leg. In this way she was completely covered, and yet as perfectly free as a man would be in case of accident. I scarcely think this style of habit will become popular, not tor some time at any rate. It exposes the figure too much before the wearer is in the saddle, and most of our ladies will wait until they are generally worn before they will have the courage to adopt them. In the country, where one can manage to escape observation, I can not think of a more convenient style of habit. HANDWRITING. PeculiaritioK of (iiarerter Indicated by INiunaii- whip. St. Nicholas. There are people who claim to read men’s characters from their writing. As the writing of every nation is distinguished by strong national peculiarities, it is easy for an expert to decide to what nation a writer belongs. Having settled that, cer tain large characteristics, which are com mon to all men, but in different degrees, can be seen in every handwriting. A cer tain number of men are calm, even-lived, sensible and practical. Men of that class are almost certain to write plain, round hands,in which every letter is distinctly leg ible; neither very much slanted forward nor and Teething. peptics. Consumptives!
