DAILY ENQUIRER * SUN: COLUMBUS, GEORGIA, THURSDAY MORMNG. NOVEMBER 4, 188* BUSINESS ANP RELIGION. So War Brtnofi tha Church and the Co.ntlug- Rimm-Talmaffe'* Sermon. Brooklyn, October 31—“There is no war between religion and business; bi - tween the Bible and the lodger; betwee i ■counting-rooms and churches," said Re,. 'T. Da Witt Talmage in opening n discourse which was intended to give encourage ment to the. business ma He took In text from Romans xii., 6: “Not slntht'uU business, fervent in spirit, serving tni Lord.” Dr. Talmage showed that busi ness was the best and most practical school for reilgious training. The thousand daily annoyances, the disappointments, the trials, the reverses of the business man. re.ceived in the right spirit, nil went to make him patient., forgiving and Christiun- liko. He held that, religion sharpened business, lent balance to the judgment, in creased the velocity of all the wheels of trade and better equipped the man who possessed it to battle with ills competitors. Anything that religion will not help a man do, Dr. Talinuge thinks, onghUnot to , be done. Business life gives a glorious ed ueatlon, and the time is coming when the religiou of Jesus Christ wilt take posses sion of all the businesi of the world. This prophecy would not come true right away, the preacher thought, but he was sure it would be fulillled in good time. “[Jod starts in the world witli a certain amount of raw material, out of which we are compelled to mould our character. Every faculty must be rounded and fin ished off by the conflicts, disappointments and trials of life. After a man has been in business for a number of years he gains an energy that will surmount all manner of obstacles. God intends that this energy should be devoted to his work. God de mands the best sheep of the flock, the best aheaf in the bundle, the best men of all generations. Oh, for fewer idlers and more workers! Archibald Sloan, of Phila delphia, was a notable example of a busi ness man, not after the fashion of the world. He sacrificed his private fortune to pay the obligations of a firm with which he was connected. He went to work, how ever, and succeeded again in winning for tune and the air of the Quaker city was full of his goodness. He was sent one day to collect a bill. When he arrived at the house he found the family packing up their goods preparatory to going to Texas to start life anew. He saw the wife and the children and he said to himself if he levied on the goods he would take the food out of the children’s mouths. He went away without saying anything about the bill. I hear some men say : ‘That is not business.’ I have heard it before- ebusiness is business.’ [Laughter.] But bye and bye we will be going up to the throne of God. Suppose God says to us: ‘You have done many wrong things in your life; right is right; business is business; you. can’t come in.’ ” [Laughter.] and the pledge of its fulliillmout. The do nation of land to a church, mid sometimes even the offer of bodily service, was made good by the placing of a glove upon tnc tt—or, in altar; and ill the transfer of lan occasional instances, of kingdoms—a glov. was made a veritable lease by virtue o r ! which possession was taken and held. As securing saft passage, like a passport; n- an offer of amity, like as though a friendly shake of the hand were proffered ; even in a bribe, wheu it was often “lined" with good gold pieces, to tempt men from their allegiance, or induce them to view a suit favorably, the glove had many u moment ■ mis message to convey, many an ini portent negotiation to open or to bind.—Magazine of Art for November. • A Khali)' SuvwhIIoii. De Boggs—My dear sir, if you can make it convenient I’d like to have that hundred dollars. I have a hill to meet— Ponsonhy—Can't do it—haven’t a dollnr to my name. De Buggs—But what am I to do'! I must pay that bill. Ponsouhy lafler reflection)—I have an idea. Suppose you borrow, as I did.—Phil adelphia Call. free Trade. The reduction of internal revenue and the taking off of revenne stamps from Pro prietary Medicines, no doubt has largely benefited the consumers,as well as relieving the burden of home manufacturers. Es pecially is this the case with Green’s Au gust Flower and Boschee’s German Syrup, as the reduction of thirty-six cents per -dozen, has been added to increase the size of the bottles containing these remedies, thereby giving one-fifth more medicine in the 75 cents size. The August Flower for Dyspepsia and Liver Comolaint, and the German Syrup for Cough and Lung trou bles, have perhaps, the largest sale of any medicines in the world. The advantage oi increased size of the bottles will be greatly appreciated by the sick and afflicted, in every town and village in civilized coun tries. Sample bottles for 10 cents remain the same size oot!2 d&wly Rust Take to Humor. • Managers of the Logan boom should take notice that Mr. Blaine has begun to make funny speeches.
