Miss Winnie Davis, the daughter of
Jefferson Davis, arrived In this city from
Richmond, Vn., Friday, being accompicd
by General Joseph K. Anderson and wife,
of Richmond. The party went to the
New York Hotel, where they are now
■topping. Miss Davis is on her way to
S -recuse, where she is a be the guest of
r. and Mrs. Tiunnas Emory. Mr. Emory
1a a sou of General Emory, of the United
States army, and a brother of Comman
der Emory, of the Dispatch. Mrs. IC1110-
S ’s father was the lale Senator Dennis
eOarthy, wiio was at. one time president
of the state senate.
Miss Davis came to the city on the same
train that carried Mrs. Grover Cleveland
and Secretary and Mrs. Endieott, who
wereon their way to Boston. In the for
ward parlor oar was Miss Davis, witli
General and Mrs. Anderson, while in the
next ear was the Cleveland party. Though
this fact was known to both parties, no
communication passed between them.
Upon the arrival of the train at Jcrrey
City Mrs. Cleveland went to the Fifth
Avenue Hotel and General Anderson and
with, with their charge, to the New York
Hotel.
Mrs. Thomas Iimory, who Is in this city,
•ailed upon Miss Davis yi sterday morning
and the two ladles went to Long Island to
witness tile Meadow Hr ok hunt. After
the hunt Miss Davis was driven to the rest
deuce of Commander F„ lory at Roalyn,
where she will remninuntil Monday, when
ahe will return to town. After re
maining for a lew days she will depart for
Syracuse, where she will remain until Jan-
•ary.
Tnis is the first time that Miss Davis lms
been In this city. Bhc wu/l horn in Rich
mond lat.- in the year of 1804. When
Jefferson Davis and hi, family went to
Europe young Winnie was placed in n
school in Germany, whom she remained
for five years. Mince her return to lids

ant face.
Gen. Anderson, in speaking of the ab-
wence- of Mrs. Grover Cleveland from Gov.
Dee’s reception in Richmond, to which she
had been invited, suid to the World re
porter last evening:
“The people of Richmond were very
anxious to meet the president’s wife anil
they were very much disappointed that
ahe did not visit us. Our people think that
women should be the best judges of their
movements, of what journeys to take or
what visits they shull make. You see it is
quite a journey from Washington to Rich
mond and, considering the short stay the
ladies were to make In the latter city, I
don’t blame them for declining to make
the trip. The report that our people at
tached political significance to her absence
U all nonsense. No such thought ever en-
tered our minds. Our pi ople had hoard
that the ladies had made preparations for
the journey, but upon befag told the dls
tanee and the fatigue attached they wisely
concluded to l-einain at home. How long
Miss Davis will remain north I cannot say.
hut I know her father is anxious to have
her return ns soon as possible.”
