« DAILY ENQUIRER • SUN: COLUMBUS, GEORGIA, THURSDAY ftORKINft, NOVEMBER 18, 1886. GEORGE )N. CHILDS FOR MAYOR. Up.May Irtom* lit* Comllrtnlo of the Workingmen lad tho ' oimimit.. Philadelphia, November 18.—There is more exoitemeiit ill this city just now over the election for mayor next February than there was over the recent state contest. All the republican loaders have their eves on the office, as the one who controls it will shape tho politics of this city for years If either McManes or Leeds or Lane call name the mayor he will be the supreme boss* Could all three, with Ham Disston, tli/’ great saw manufacturer, who is also of political importance, puli together, they could at least nominate a candidate. The trouble is that they are pulling in dill'erent wavs; each wants nig own man. While the democratic leaders liuvc their favorites, the voters aro drifting toward Uov. Pactison. His term will end with the year, and it is understood that he is willing to make tho run for mayor. The office will pay as well as .the governorship, and under the. new charter lie will have great powers. Besides, it will keep him in public life. The sentiment for him is un questionably growing rapidly, and if op posed by a thoroughly machine republican there is no doubt that he could sweep the city, as he did twice for the office of comptroller. Bat there is danger to Pattison growing. This is the vote of tho workingmen. A movement has been started in behnlf of George W. Childs, the proprietor of the Ledger. There isn’t a workingman in the city who does not count Childs as his friend. Should they make him their can didate the democrats would be forced to endorse him. In fact, it would be a very smart political move on their part, for it would effectually shut out all the republi can bosses from power. Mr. Childs, with the endorsement of both the labor party and the democrats, could unquestionably defeat any man that could be named by the republican convention. This is the state of affairs just now. There is promise of a very interesting winter in local politics. “PORT” HICKOX FIXED IT. Tin. 1 President’s Old Toddy.JlIxer (Jets Office fori Friend. Buffalo, November 16.—The democrats of Buffalo are just now having a great deal of sport at the expense of Porter B. Hic- kox, proprietor of a Main street drinking saloon. “Port.” as he is familiarly called, was an original Cleveland man. He knew how to flavor to Mr. Cleveland’s taste and he regarded himself as a favorite chum. When Mr. Cleveland was elected presi dent, Hickox asked him as the least he -could do to make him an Indian agent on the Cattarraugus reservation. The ap pointment never came. “Port” then grew sore and swore at the administration. He bet against the part}’ and relegated it to oblivion. He side-tracked ull his friends and it came to be widely known that “Port” Hickox was “agin the govern ment.” One day a few weeks ago a friend from Gowanda named Bennett came in and con fided to “Port” that he wanted to be made revenue inspector there. “Well,” said Hickox, “I’ll fix it for you. I want to get a chance at the president anyway.” So he wrote a hard letter telling the president he thought it about time a few democrats were given a show. He waited without a reply till yesterday, when he decided to go up and give Collector Hanlon a piece of his mind, and try and bluff him into making the appointment. He had no sooner given his name than the collector said: “Why, 1 have a letter from the presi dent asking that your friend be appointed as soon as possible. His papers will be ready in a few days.” Port says he could have been knocked •down with a feather. Advice to Mothers.—Mrs. Winslow’s Soothing Syrup should always be used when children are cutting teeth. It re lieves the little sufferer at once; it produces natural, quiet sleep by relieving the child from pain, and the little cherub awakes as “bright as a button.” It is very pleasant to taste. It soothes the child, softens the gums, allays all pain, relieves wind, regu lates the bowels and is the best known remedy for diarrhoea, whether arising from teething or other causes. Twenty- fl-e cents a bottle. jel7 d&wly The Father of Mini) Phililrcu. ‘Jackson, Miss., November 17.—George White, a negro, who now resides at Bul lock’s Bayou, Concordia Parish, La., yes terday swore Before the federal grand jury that he was the father of 165 children. White is seventy-four years of age and is quite intelligent. He insists that he has kept an accurate account of his children and that they numbered 165. When asked how many wives he had had, he said “that colored people in his young days never paid any attention to marrying.” A num ber of his sons, he says, were killed in the war, and he is now here on pension busi ness.
