The Central railroad is to soon build an exten sion from Blakely via Columbia to Newton, Ala. That bits Columbus again. The sooner we build j south of us the better. Up to date, when we wanted a road, we had to help build it. Every , railroad coining to Columbus has a largo share of Columbus money in it We shall expect no j alteration of the rule in the present case, and i our people will do their full share. Chief En* i gincer Greene has just returned iYom an inspec tion of the line secured as far south as Weston. 1 He is very much pleased with the country. The timber interest on the line farther south is im mense. The feitility of the cultivated lands is exceeded by none in the state. Hie line IYom Weston to Albany will be very light and easily built, we learn. Everything looks favorable for 1 a prosperous railway if this route is adopted. ('liming to Columbus. ' We find the following in the Marion County i Patriot, hut know nothing about the facts in the case: We have it on good authority that the B. V. I & E. railroad will be completed to Columbus at i an early day, and the e stern end of the road i will be extended and connect wUh the Central at Milieu. Our road will then become an im portant short line between the east and west. Tin's iH not mere rumor. The gentleman who gave us 'he information is in the “railroad ring” and knows what he is talking about. We find this notice in the Ellavillc Enter prise, and a similar one appeared in the Ameri cas Recorder lust week We hepe this is not mere rumor, but we want to see something more tangible than newspaper reports. The stock holders of the Buena Visla and Ellavillc railroad held a meeting at Ellavillc last week, uut we know nothing in rigarcl to their action except those rumors which have been printed in the papers. We had a talk with President Lowe a I few days ago, and he was confident that the pn " , posed line would he built provided the Central system of roods remain under the old manage- I ment which at presort seems to be in doubt. We I trust those rumors are not idle and will thicken The friem’s and acquaintances of Mr. Travis into something more substantial, but we can’t Btvwart and family are invited to attend the ! bank on much until after tlio January election of funeral of Mr. Stewart from his lute residence, in j the Central stockholde s, which may change the lower Girard this (Sunday) afternoon at So’clouk. ^ aspect of things wonderfully. 4 Os nil hi T i-iiiorrow Night. j L’Allegro German Club will give a german to morrow night, complimentary to visiting young | ladies. The indications arc that it will be quite j an eujoynbfo affair. rc nnd Prayer Meeting. Rev. J. II. Campbell requests us to state that he will hold this meeting this afternoou at 4 o’clock in the room in Banks' building occupied by the Free Will Baptist church. All are cor dially invited. .! Ciiiutge • f ('uinlhiutcK. Mr. J. K. Orr declines to run for alderman o* the second wurd. The friends of Mr. J. Marion Estes have pievuilcd on hiiu to make the race. Mr. A. M. Eilcdge is lb© member from that wa d and is a candidate for re-election. Iliml in Girard. Mr. Tiavis Stewart died at his home in Girard yesterday morning at 6 o’clock. Ho was about 45 years of ago, and was a brother of Mr. Freeman Stewart, the well-known machinist. He had numerous friends who will regret to learn of his death. si. Paul Church. At St. Paul church there will be preaching by the pastor and religious services ut 11 a. m. and 7 p.m. At the close of the morning sermon u class of candidates will be received into the church. The pastor greatly desires the atten dance of tin* young people of the church at the morning service. A Passenger I'm in Wrecked. A gentleman who came up on the ipidnight train on the Mobile and Girard last night reports that a telegram was received at Union Springs, stating that the passenger train from Mont gomery to Eufaula had been wricked between that place and Euftuiia but no particulars were given. No particulars of the wreck could bo ob tained at this city. Tin* ( il> Registration. The city registration book was closed yester day evening. The total registration is 1182, of whish 906 are whites and 276 colored. This is quite a large registration for an off year and shows that considerable interest is felt in the ap proaching election. The following shows a com parison of the number registered for four years: 1886. 1885. 1881. 18*3 Whites 906 627 764 892 Colored 276 157 321 466 1,182 784 1,075 1,348 The Sunil' Old Story. Yesterday morning a negro woman uamed Vic Robinson, who lives on Mrs. A. E. Riggers’ plan tation, locked her two little children in her cabin and went oil'to work. It was not long before the acitmins ofthe children attracted the attention of the people on the place, and when the door of the cubin was burst open it was found that the youngest, an infant, had been fatally burned and the other so badly burned that death will proba bly result. The oldest child, it is supposed, had carried tire to the bed in which the inlknt slept, as the bed clothing vvere found to be on fire. An Indian Summer D»j. Yesterday was another bright, pleasant and beautiful day. It brought out our people by scores, who were to be seeu on the streets, either riding, walking, visiting, shopping or marketing for Sunday. Almost every one appeared to wear smiling faces, and the air of contentment seemed to pervade the masses. The old, as well as young, wo e out getting the benefit ofthe pleas ant sunshine. In illustration of how everybody apnears to enjoy the pleasant weather we are having, a. young lady, with a voice as sweet as ever diluted a caramel, was heard to say: ‘T have enjoyed the day so much; why, really, I have talked so much that my tongue is tired.” Rumors About (lie Central. 'flic Savannah News has the following in refer ence to the reported sale of Mrs. Greene’s stock in the Central railorad: “The atcok market went wild yesterday. Cen tral opened at 112 and jumpod to 115, closing ex cited at that figure. The rumored sale of Mr.-. Green’s stock in Gen. Alexander s interest, and the gjnoflleiivl announcement that Gen Alex ander will bo a candidate for the presidency of the road were the principal causes ofthe upward movement. “There wore all sorts of rumors in the street, and it was no difficult to hear almost anything in regard to the sudden rise. The belief has been that the heavy buying of Central was in the in terest of a new party seeking to get control "f the road, although a good many charge that what purports to be a fight for control is a pre tense indulged in by leading operators to -force up the stock. The movement of the past few days, how ever, has strengthened the belief that other than speculative intiuences are at work, aud that a strong effort is being iiu.de by some one outside of the present management to got hold of a f uifiolent amount of stock to ooiftrol the coming election. “The rumor published in the News yesterday that n ’contest for control’ is going on is strengthened by the statement ot Major A. L. llartridgo that tho Green stock, amounting to 6450 shares, bus been sold in New York in Gan. Alexander’s interest, ami that ii was bought by the syndicate that has been buying heavily for the past t^o mouths. “From advices which Major Harlridge received yesterday he stated that the syndicate is assured that it has a sufficient amount o stock to control the election, un i that it will name Gen. Alexan der for pigsideut. He farther stated thut the symlicute had no connection with the Richmond anil Danville system, and the aim will be to nromole the interests of Savannah aud of Georgia. !t is likely, he aeded, that under tho new management the Central system will be strengthened by conuection with other roads making an outlet here. “Owing to the telegraph lines being down and communication with New York cut off very little stock .vas bought yesterday on the New York ac count. The day’s transactions were about 800 shares, 400 of which went north. There is a dif ference of three points in the price of stock with and without voting priviletie. Stock carrying the voting privilege that sold yesterday for 115 was offered at 112 without voting privileges.” The Georgia .Midland. Work on the Ge rgia Midland railroad is pro gressing in a mod satisfactory manner. Twenty miles of track have been laid, and by the first of next month the road will be running to Wuverly Hall, when it is proposed to put on a regular train. A New Road in Alabama. From the Montgomery Advertiser wo learn that a declaration of incorporation of the Attalla Rail road Company has been filed. The incorporators are Messrs. Samuel Stewart, Miles A. Hughes, John P. Stewart, William G. Christopher, Ed mund W. Cox and William H. Denson, all resi dent citizens of Etowah county. The terminal points of the proposed railroad will be Gadsden and Attalla. The amount of the capital stock is placed at $15,000, divided into 160 shares of the pur value of $100 each. This road will peuetrate a region of coal, iron anil other mineral deposits, as well as fine sulphur and chalybeate springs, and the company propose to build branch roads to develop and utilize these resources. Another Library OiWcrt. Arrangements have been completed for another musical entertainment for the benefit of the Public Library. The date ha^ been fixed for Thursday evening, December 2. The concert will be given by Madame Grant and Prof. Mc Cormack, and the musicians will not only be composed of their large divas, but will embrace some of the best talent ofthe city. The programme, which is quite elaborate, has been cavefully culled from the best compositions of Rossini, Tannhauser, Strauss, Haydn, Com- pana anil other celebrated masters. Among other prominent features will be a violoncello solo by a Columbus gentleman. A concert at the hands of Madame Grant and Prof. McCormack is bound to be a success. They have been conducting a school of music, in Co lumbus for several months, nnd are accomplish ed and thorough musicians. Under such man agement, and for so laudable a purpose, the con cert will doubt less receive the generous putron- age it will merit. 61.50 81.10 81.50 81.50 81.54) 81.50 83.50 81.50 81.50. fiee our Old Ladies’ Hand-Made Hhoes at ubovc price.
