The Presbyterian church of Gainesville
has called to the pastorate. Rev. J. H.'
Dickson, and he bus accepted.
Somebody stole ijSO from Antonio Car-
vello while he was asleep at his home in
Macon, Wednesday night.
Jacob Mass, of Cochran, has assigned
with liabilities between $10,000 and >-50,000,’
and assets about the same amount. W. A.
Watts is assignee.
At a negro supper at Gum Creek Satur
day night a negro began firing a pistol in
the house o.nd shot three negroes, one fa
tally.
Joe Cooper was convicted of the murder
of John Mason, both colored, at Darien
Thursday and sentenced to be hung on
January 14 next.
Mr. Joe Miller, of White county, lost his
residence and household furniture by fire
recently. In trying to rescue his baby
from the house he came very near losing
his own life.
The gin house belonging to the Misses
Wright, daughters of James Wright, near
Mallorysville, was burned on Sunday night
with a large lot of cotton. Origin of the
fire unknown.
Mr. L. Byers, living ten miles north of
Gainesville, had his gin house destroyed
by tire Friday last. The loss is consider
able. About five bales of cotton, seventy-
five bushels of wheat and a large quantity
of oats were consumed.
Mr. Charles Farror, of Blountsville, is
one of the brag farmers of Jones countv.
Last year with two plows he made f >rty-
two bales of cotton, and this year he will
make thirty-six and plenty of provisions.
He says he is going to get a new cotton
screw so that he can pack bales heavy
enough to bring .$45 regardless of how low
the prices tend.
The gin house of James M. W. Cody,
situated about one and a half miles from
Warrenton, was destroyed by fire Wednes
day night at 12 o’clock. There were forty-
three bales of Beed cotton in the house be
longing to C. H. Lintieum, about forty of
which were totally destroyed. The fire
was without a doubt the work of an incen
diary, as the gin was run by water power
and no one had been near it in a day or
two. The loss is about $1800; no insurance.
Prof. W. A. Allen and Mr. A. C. Carmi-
cal, of Newnan, were out bird hunting last
week in Panther Creek district. Carmieal
shot at some birds and Allen happened to
be in range. One shot struck just under
his right eye, one pierced the left ear, one
lodged in the left elbow, and his hat was
riddled with the shot. D \ Starr probed
for the shot, but could not find any. The
eye is very much inflamed and the wound
causes great suffering.
A sad accident occurred at Mr. I. D. Up
shaw’s giu in Cobb county Siturday morn
ing last. Frank Ashby, a fourteen-year-old
colored boy, who had been working in and i
about the gin house all the fall, by some I
means got his arm against the saws and it |
was badly torn. Drs. Cotton ami Middle- I
brooks, (if Powder Springs, were sent for l
by Mr. Upshaw, who came and amputated j
his arm just above the elbow and did all j
they could for him. but lu never rallied
from the shock. He died in au hour after j
the operation was performed.
The report reached Baxley, Thursday :
evening, tb it a my (tori ms homicide had ;
been committed in the interior of Appling, :
about twenty miles from that place. Rife j
Taylor was the victim. William Nelson |
anil Taylor lived within 100 yards of each j
oilier. ' About midnight on Tuesday night j
last a band of unknown persons visited ;
Nelson’s home fertile supposed purpose of
regulating him, and whilst they were try
ing to enter the house his wile gave sev
eral screams for assistance. Taylor, hear
ing the noise, went upon his piazza to as
certain the cause of the alarm, and was
immediately shot t wice with a shotgun
The gun contained buckshot and death
was instantaneous. The perpetrators of
the crime are unknown. Taylor was look
ed upon as a good citizen.

Win. Brown, colored, escaped from jail
at Selma Wednesday night.
John Davis, a negro rapist, was lynched
at Randolph Wednesday night.
The Coosa furnace, at Gadsden, finds it
impossible to get cars to move its iron.
Major J. D. Cross has been appointed
superintendent of education for Perry
county.
The first number of the Uniontown Her
ald. edited by Gordon Dubose, is just out
and is quite a creditable paper.
A Memphis syndicate and J. E. Brown,
of Scottsboru, have bought about 15,000
acres of ore mid coai lands on and near the
Cumberland mountain in Jackson county.
Mr. J. C. Guy was shot and painfully
wounded by an unknown party near his
residence oh the lower Wetumpka road,
near Montgomery, Thursday night.
The Jacksonville Republican says there
seems to be an epidemic among the hogs
in town something like quinsy, and many
have died. In fact, they arc dying daily in
the streets and elsewhere.
II. H. Hurt, Sr., of Marion, and a Mr.
Jones, of Bibb county, had a dispute a few
days ago at Marion about an account,
which resulted in a fight and the serious
stabbing of Mr. Hurt in his side aqd arm.
The physicians of Union Springs have
entered into a protective association with
regard to the collection of overdue bills. A
list of those who wont pay is made out
and each doctor agrees not to practice for
such until payment is made.
Messrs. Christopher & Stewart, of At-
talla, have closed a contract with the
Walker Iron and Coal company, of Rising
Fawn, Ga., to supply them with 1500 to
3000 tons of iron ore per mouth for ten
years from the Attalla mines.
A declaration was filed Thursday ior the
incorporation of the Enterprise Manufac
turing Company, at Birmingham, .with
*100,000 capital stock, to make sash, doors,
blinds, etc, A dozen large operators ol
that city and other places in north and
middle Alabama ui c in the project.
The negro Tim b■ one, who was serving
out a sentence on the streets in Birming
ham for assauit with intent to murder,
and who escaped from the authorities last
Friday, was killed on Saturday night at ,
one of the Kansas City railroad camps on
the Warrior river. j
An unexpected failure of the large dry
goods and grocery firm of Later <£jonn-
son, of Anniston occurred Wednesday
afternoon. The court appointed Mr. J. a.
Goodwin receiver at the request of Geo. L. ;
Cater, of one the firm. Assets and liabilities |

J. M. Ware, a well known citizen ot Bir
mingham, was knocked down and robbed
by five negroes, in the heart ol tnecit>
Wednesday night. The police caught one
of them about day. He gave the others
away, and Thursday morning two of them
were taken. The first man said they bad
been sleeping in a car in one ot the rail
road yards and depending upon burglary
and robbery for a living.

St. Augustine’s board of trade has com
pleted its organization.
The fish and oyster men of Tampa re
ceive more orders than they can fill.
A scheme is now on foot for erecting and
operating a tub and pail factory in Gaines-
On Monday workmen commenced work
on the new depot of the St. Augustine,
Palatka and Tocoilrailroad at St. Augus
tine. The depot will be built within three
minutes’ walk of the piaza, and will be
completed as rapidly as possible.
The members of the St. Augustine
Guards, which now number twenty-seven,
received their gnus the past. week. The
county commissioners at tli-ir lust meet
ing voted an allowance ol ; l) per month
toward the maintenance of the armory.
_W. H. Robertson will gather between
1500 and 2000 boxes of oranges tiiis season
from his grove on Newnan’s lake, for
which lie will receive prices ranging from
$2 to $3.50 per box. Mr. Robertson says
there is a large profit in ruising oranges at
$1.50 per box.
Titusville has been incorporated and has
elected the following municipal ticket:
