DAILY ENQUIRER - SUN: COLUMBUS, GEORGIA, SATURDAY WORKING. NOVEMBER ‘27, 1886. JUGGLING FOR A SENATOR. X-publics* PIntH In Indlimii In Tlirnn Hut Dr-mn- rviitn. Indianapolis, Ind., November 25 Who will succeed Gen. Harrison in tb, United 3Utes senate is tbe knottiest of pr. litical problems. The democratic i- ty of two on joint ballot would seem to set tle It, at least to the point that he would -certainly be a democrat, but it is an open boast here among republican managers that Harrison or some other republican must secure the prize. Among democrats there is us yet not much discussion as to who will be their final choice. The ques tion that agitates them most is how to keep the republicans from stealing the leg islature by throwing democrats out of the lower branch, which republicans control fcy a majority of ten. A prominent candi- date for speaker says he hopes his party ‘‘will not do anything illegal, but then a legislature is somewhat autocratic and will ■do almost anything.” A dispatch from Washington to-day says that W. H. English will lead the revolt against Cleveland and be a candidate for the senate on that issue. The correspon dent met Mr. English to-night and called his attention to the matter. lie remarked : ' ‘Oh, I am not a candidate in the sense that would imply. I would be uudor cer tain contingencies—that is if the party -could not unite upon McDonald or Gray and I could secure united action. As to heading any revolt against Cleveland that is all nonsense. If I went to the senate I would go as a democrat pure and simple.” It is understood here that English has many warm friends in the incomin legis lature from this county and the old second district, which he represented several times in congress, some of whom are out- -sooken in their desire to support him. McDonald under all the circumstances -of the ease probably holds the inside track. Gov. Gray is formidable in ease the recent election of a reoubliean lieutenant-gov ernor is pronounced void. In that case the present presiding officer of the senate, Sen ator Smith, a democrat, could and would aid the democratic majority of twelve iu the senate to checkmate the proposed re- S ublioan programme to unseat the two emocrats in the lower house, who make the democratic majority on joint ballot. A democratic conference of great length has discussed the complications growing ou] of the announced purpose ol Senator Green Smith to claim the office of lieutenant- governor on the score that he, as president pro tem., is entitled to it. The question was discussed in a judicial light and the opinion was generally con curred in that the matter could not be made a campaign issue, but it should be de cided in the courts, if possible, before the legislature meets, and steps will be at once taken to get it before the courts. Everything connected with the entire question is involved in much doubt, and all depends upon the grit und power of the democrats to noid the majority of two on joint ballot which they hold on the face of the returns. The rest will be easy. Ili-iir, (Icorge’H Hat. A New York contemporary states that “while the election waspending George wore an old felt ha;; since the election he wears a nicely brushed plug,” and inti mates that George is a hypocrite. But there is another nxplanation. Very likely George’s judgment got the better of his inclination and he bet a hat on Hewitt.— Kansas City Journal. “ItOUUII ON IMl.KS.” Why sufter Piles? About August 1st 1865, an eruption ap peared on my arms and legs, winch pained me very much and seemed to affect my physical condition generally. Under the treatment of g physician the sores disap peared except on my left leg. There it seemed to concentrate, and two-thirds of the limb from the knee to the ankle soon became a solid running sore that Un charged bloody matter continually. I was treated by many physicians at various times, but obtained no permanent reliei. On the advice of a physician at this place, I finally commenced using Swiff s Bpecinc.
