6 DAILY ENQUIRER • SUN: OOLUMBUB, GEORGIA, WEDNESDAY MORNING,^DECEMBER 8, 1886, RUMBLINGS ON THE RAIL. TIm Georgia Central’* Four Per Dividend. Oent. ■lataThat It l« a Decoy to Catch Vote, tor Hanoi. Alexander Playing lo Win Next Tear—Impor tant Change. In the Baltimore and Ohio Njn- A Savannah correspondent thus writes about the Central railroad agitation: “Between railroad matters, politics and gcandal Damn Gossip’s tireless tongue has not had a moment's rest during the entire Week just passed. A seini-annunl dividend Of 4 per cent, was something that stock holders of the Georgia Central railroad as Uttle expected as a shower of munna. ey had been Would have been ... . less than 21 per cent. But 4 per cent. 1 Why even officials of the company dis credited the first announcement. With Central paying a 2 per cent, semi-annual dividend Savannah is fairly active and confident. With a 3 per cent, things are lively and booming, but with a 4 per cent, she boils like Hades with the lid off. Gen. Alexander’s fight for the presideuoy was the wind—bo it ill or not In its final results—that blew the good dividend to the stockholders. The Alex ander people say it is bait concealing the Raoul hard cash for the hungry owners of Stock to swallow. Had it been declared earlier, or had it been thought that it was. coming, Capt. Raoul would have more ■took by a great deal to rate than he has. After all, however, It is only (1 per cent, for the year, inasmuch as the dividend for the first six months was but 2 per cent. A railroad in Georgia would bardly dare to The Verdict Uaaxlmou. W. D. Suit, druggist, Bippus, Ind., testi fies: “lean recommend Electric Bitten as the very best remedy. Every bottle sold has given relief in every case. One man took six bottles, and was cured of rheuma tism of 10 years’ standing.” Abraham Hare, druggist, Bellvilie, Ohio, affirms: “The best selling medicine I have ever handled in my 20 years’ experience, is ' Tth< ' * '• Electric Bitters." tiousands of others have added their testimony, so that the verdict is unanimous that Electric Bitters do euro all diseases of the liver, kidneys or blood. Down would go rates with n horizontal reduction all around, and the next year the road would be doing well if it paid salaries. “Apropos of the fight, which daily waxes hotter, is a report that if the present man agement is re-elected one gofden plum is sure to change bands. For several years Goneral A. R. Lawton haH been lending counsel for the Railroad and Banking Company at $10,000 per annum. The gen eral Is a brother-in-law of General Alex ander, and is doing all he can to defeat ' ‘ ' ’ did four years ! got in they _ _ le coals-of-firo planTbut it has not worked. Their prin cipal attorney is working to oust them.and if the present board of directors is ro-elect- «d there will be one vacancy, and an early ono, it is said, in the company’s attorney- ship. “Mr. B. A. Dcnmard, of Denmard & Adams, would stand a good chance of get ting the position, ns he is an able lawyer ana has strong friends on the board ot di rectors. That is one change that is count ed on if Capt. Raoul is re-elected. If he is defeated it would puzzle a Delphic Oracle to foretell what changes will be • made. All the employes believe that the general will out down salaries if he is elected. He says that he will run the road on modern principles, and perhaps the fears of the employes* are well grounded. For the safety of the traveling public and the ad herence to the schedule, it is to be hoped that the general’s ideas of what are modern principles embrace the adoption ofthe telograpnie system for the running of trains. "It has been stated that the Alexander party is preparing to apply fo. a manda mus to compel the management to make publlo a list ofthe names ofthe stockhold ers ofthe company. If thnt is done it will place Gen. Lawton in a position similar to Pooh-Bah’s when Ko-Ko consulted him about the festivities of- the approaching marriage. As private secretary that worthy remarked: “ Don’t stint yourself,” but as chancellor ofthe exchequer he was bound to see due economy observed. As Gen. Alexander’s friend, Gen. Lawton, would be inclined to say to the directors: “I advise you to accede to their demands,” as lord high attorney of the company he would be bound to say, “ Do not do any thing of the kind.” “There is good authority for the state ment that General Alexander does not ex- ? oot to bo elected this time. He proposes,- hough, to hold on to what stock he has and make a desperate figlitoneyear hence. The trouble four years ago was that his syndicate could not hold tho stock it bought up. Had it been able to carry that stock a year General Alexander might have buen tho Central’s president three years ago. He is in much better financial condition now than he was then. The list of stockholders cannot, be obtained in time to do him any good in this canvass; but he Will have It for another year.” BIG RAILROAD CHANGES. Important Division Chungt* on the Ilulllmori' and Ohio. A Pittsburgh, Fa., special to the Tribune says: A man posted on railroad matters informed a reporter yesterday afternoon that he expocted some important changes in the management of the Baltimore aud Ohio about the first of the year. He ex- g ects to sec the first vice president, amuel Spencer, resign, and be succeeded by the second vice president, Thomas King. He added, “Next, I think that in stead of having one general manager, as at present, there will bo three general mana gers. The line from New York to Balti more, with its branches, will form one general division, with Jas. McCreighton os general manager; tljo lines east of the Ohio river, including the Pittsburg divi sion, the Metropolitan branch, the Parkers burg branch, the Shenandouh-valley, branch and all others later, will form the central grand divison. I am told that William M. Clements, at present general munager of the Erie Express Company, has been . offered the position. Captain Clements was formerly master of transpor tation of the Baltimore and Ohio, and un der the Sponccr plan of reorganization was made general superintendent, a position subordinate of that of General Manager Denham, who was brought from the Louisville and Nashville. The failure to appoint Captain Clements to the general managership was a source of mortification to him, and, in fact, to nearly all of tho Baltimore au thorities, and, as soon as au opportunity was offered, he resignod, to accept the management of the Erie express. The trans-Ohio interests of the Baltimore and Ohio will form another division, with W. W. Peabody, formerly president and general manager of the Ohio and Missis sippi. as general manager. Mr. Peabody, like Captain Clements, has been one ofthe best and most intelligent to the Baltimore and Ohio officials. At the recent reorgan ization of the Ohio and Mississippi he was tendered the office of president, but de clined in order to retain his connection with the Baltimore and Ohio.” Labor xml Riches.
