There are between twenty and thirty
cases of mumps in Dahloncga.
Thomas Hodgson is in Athens on a fur
lough from the treasury department.
At Augusta Sunday the thermometer
was considerably below the freezing point
all day, but notwithstanding that fact the
negroes in the afternoon held a baptism in
the river, and twenty-eight candidates
were immersed in the freezing water.
Mertle, the six-year-old daughter of Mor
gan Ivey, who was formerly an engineer
on the Bast Tennessee, Virginia and Geor
gia railroad, was badly burned at Rome
Saturday. Her apron caught from the grate
and before her mother could extinguish
the flames her front, arms, limbs, trunk
and face were burned, Dr. West was
called and dressed her burns, and gives it
as his opinion that she will recover, though
in a critical condition at present.
Near Spring Place Tuesday night, a
short while after dark, as M. ft. Chastain
and J. L. Edmondson, jr., were in a buggy
together, driving slowly up the road above
town, they were instantly met by little
Heck Edmondson, who was riding rapidly
on horseback in the opposite direction In
the collision one of the buggy shafts was
thrusted through the heart of the horse
which Heck was riding, killing the horse
instantly, and breaking the buggy to
pieces. No other damage was done,
The Codyviile colored-.Baptist church,
situated about four and one half miles from
Warrenton, was destroyed bv lire on last
Saturday night. The building is supposed
to have been set on fire, and suspicion rest
ed on Ben Pinson, against whom a warrant
was issued. Ho was arrested by Deputy
Sheriff’ Norris and gave bond for appear
ance before the superior court. Pinson ivas
until recently a deacon of the church burn
ed, but a tew days before the burning wns
tried for some offense and excommunica
ted. It is said that he threatened during
the progress of his trial to have the church
burned if he was turned out.

Mr. W. P. Smith sold Tuesday fifteen
acres in north Birmingham for $20,000.
Sam. Gibbs, colored, died near Eufaula,
Sunday aight, from exposure while drunk.
Birmingham continues to boom, and al
most every day new corporations are or
ganized there.
Birmingham offers eighty acres of land
for five years’ and proposes to erect the
necessary buildings thereon to have the
state lair.
Patents have been issued to Leonard 3.
Brooks, of Birmingham, for a ear wheel,
and to Andrew B. Blower, of Montgomery,
for a cotton press.
Mr. R. H. Pearson has sold his resilience
on Third avenue aud Twenty-third street,
in Birmingham, to Judge Wheelook, of
Virginia, for the sum of $4-7,000. This was
about $225 per front foot.
Schade Scarborough, John and Dennis
Williams and.T. I. Scarborough, all color
ed, on trial in Clayton last week for the
murder of another colored man at Stir
Hill several months ago, were sentenced
Saturday evening. The first named to lie
hung on January 27, John and Dennis
Williams to the penitentiary for forty
years each, and T. I. Scarborough twenty
years. W

Milton and broke his leg on Wednesday.

While coupling cars at Lukeland last
Saturday, Ed Bugg received a severe crush
between two freight ears, though for
tunately his injuries were not serious.
There is an orange tree of not largo di
mensions in the yard of W. J. Taylor, at
Clearwater Harbor, from which 3000
oranges had been gathered, and yet the
tree was not stripped.
A few days ago Senator-elect P. Kelly, of
Nassau county, was thrown from his horse
and slightly injured while superintending
his construction forces at the southern ex
tension of the Florida Railway and Navi
gation company.
Rev. W. E. Shive, who has preached to
the Presbyterian congregation at Plant
City ior the past eighteen months, took his
departure on Wednesday last for Ripley,
Miss., wiiere he goes to take the place of
Rev. J. \V. Graham, with whom he ex
changes work for the winter.
A son of Mr. Boutwell, who lives about
three miles from Milton, on Viney branch,
shot himself accidentally on Tuesday last.
He was getting over a fence and ptillim;
his gun after him, when it went oft', send
ing a full load of buckshot through his
breast and killing him instantly.
During the melee incident' to the storm
at Pensacola, Friday, one of the small
leopards in Robinson’s menagerie got out
of its cage and was lost to sight in the
darkness. A reward of $10 was offered for
its capture. Saturday morning a colored
man caught the little varmint playing on
the front porch of Mr. Johnson s resi
dence on Seville square.

A prominent business man in Wilming
ton, Del., in speaking of a cure of cancer
on himself, writes to the Morning News ot
that city:

money and time running to Philadelphia
to consult- the best physicians there, but
could get but little or no relief. About a

time in this city, Chester and Philadelphia,
but could not get any relief, apparently.
