DAILY ENQUIRER - SUN, COLUMBUS, GEOBGIA, SATURDAY MORNING, DECEMBER 11, 188G. N«w« from the Three States Told in Brief Paragraphs. i DoulileFscrd C'slf »t Forsyth—One Han Acid- dentally Slionls Another Near Newton-riic (•old Discovery In Morgan County—A Little lloy Accidentally Killed In Hamilton County. (Jeorirla. Mrs. Jennie Culberson, of Macon died Thursday. Sylvester Allen, an old and well known citizen of Madison, died suddenly Wednes day night. Mr. Seaborn Edwards, living a few miles west of Buchanan, recently killed three hogs that averaged a little over 200 pounds each, and were not quite a year old. The Elberton cotton seed oil mill prop erty was sold Ht mortgage sale for $3000 and was bought by Mr. D. P. Olesby. It cost *10,000 a few years ago and was in per fect order. The monopoly of the Oil Trust Company forced its suspension of business and sale. Dr. W. C. Mclntire, one of Franklin’s best citizens, died Wednesday evening about 3 o’clock. He had been suffering greatly for some time with heart disc ise, but was able to be up attending to his du ties. He dropped dead while sampling a bale of cotton. At Buchanan, on Thursday, the barn of Mr. G. M. Roberts fell under the weight of ice and snow. There were two children in the barn at the time, who escaped with only slight injuries. There were two mules, one horse, a hugg.v and a wagon in the barn when it fell, and all escaped ex cept one mule, which was caught under the falling timbers and seriously hurt. On Friday last, young Mose Hitchcock, colored, living on Capt. Newell’s place in Baldwin countv, became enraged at Mr. Malone at Walker’s bar-room, and besides abusing him, advanced upon him with a razrr, whereupon Mr. Malone struck him on the head with a weight and knocked him senseless. Mose is represented to be seriously if not dangerously injured. - Quite an unfortunate accident happened near Newton, in Baker county, a few days since. Messrs. W. W. Williams and John Hall, both of Newton, were out hunting and while engaged in that sport became separated from each other. Not knowing that Hall was near, Williams fired his gun, but unfortunately the entire load took ef fect in the buck of Hall’s head, who was not more than thirty feet distant. The shot penetrated the skin on the back of the head, glancing over the skull and com ing out through the scalp. The wound though paiuful is not dangerous. At the drug store of Messrs. Ponder & Hill, in Forsyth, is the stuffed skin of a double-face calf. It has two distinct faces; four eyes, two mouths, and three ears, one on each side of the double head, fully developed, and the third only par tially developed, and on the line that marks the partition of the faces, and a double brain. A diasection of the body discovered that there was a fully develop ed heart, hut no entrails, and that the rear portion of the’spina! column was inverted, while the front was natural, the two por tions being disconnected. It is said that Messrs. R. L and J. S. Cal loway, of Lexington, instead of using tons of guano made their fertilizers at home, being a compost of stable manure and cot ton seed. This pile of compost had no loss than 700 wagon loads of manure and cot ton seed in it With this they prepared their land. Now, what i3 the result after one year? Mr. R. L. Calloway says that he planted for 125 bales of cotton. He has ginned at home and had the same packed and sold 153 bales of cotton, about an aver age weight of 475 pounds to the bale. His tenants have made 50 Dales more on the place. This yield is ail average of 15 bales to the plow. Most of the corn was planted on bottom land, and some as many as three times been replanted then to wash away at last. The corn crop is now cribbed and exceeds 3000 bushels. Some 500 bushels of potatoes, over 1000 bushels of oats and peas. Aliilmmn. Mrs. E. W Fort, of Marion Junction, was burned to death Wednesday night. R. J. Campbell has been arrested' and jailed in Selina on the charge of forgery. Mr. Murphy, the night watchman at the East Tennessee depot at Anniston, has had a nice fortune left him by the death of a relative in Boston. The excitement over the discovery of more gold in Morgan county continues to grow'. Prospectors are pouring in and lands are inereaaing in prices rapidly. Mr. Ab. Jones, of Anniston, the young man who a few months ago drew $15,000 in the Louisiana state lottery, is now quoted as being worth .^50,000. He has been spec ulating in Birmingham real estate. Patty Bros., dealers in general merchan dise at Woodlawu, were burned out Wednesday night, and the building slid stock entirely destroyed. The loss above insurance amounts to §750. It is supposed that, a lamp which was used in the store for the first time was fractured aud ex ploded. Win. Allbrooks, formerly white hostler of the Mechanics’fire company of Selma, disputed a bill claimed by a seamstress, Mra. Ann Fuller, in making a dress tor his wife. He was sued by Mrs. Fuller and judgment reudered in her iavor. All- brooks, meeting her on the street riuirs- day, jumped upon her, beat. her. badly and then skipped the city, leaving his wite and child. Florida. St. Augustine is to have the telephone. A schooner line has been opened be tween Tampa and Pensacola. A state chess tournament will be held at Putua liorda, beginning December 15. Two gold medals are offered, and no entrance fee is charged players. An election is to be held in Suwanee countv on December 14 to see if the people will bond the county for $(1536.66 to build a bridge across the Suwanee river at Bran ford. St. Augustine’s postmaster reports re ceipts for money orders issued since Janu ary 1, 1880, of $90,000, and yet the depart ment won’t give him any help in the way of clerks, etc. A young son of Mrs. Henderson, in Hamilton county, last week, while chas ing a rabbit, fell and his gun was dis charged, killing a little boy by the name of Down. A tramp, while stealing a ride between Aucillaand Greenville, last Wednesday, was thrown from the cars by a sudden jar and killed, the wheels passing over him and cutting him in two. At St. Augustine Monday, lUiguste Mess- ner, a Sweedo, and captain of the Ponce de Leon fleet of scows which brings the sand from the North Beach, while making a. trip up the North river, fell overboard and was drowned. Dr. John C. Barrows, U. 9. A., who for five years has been stationed in Arizona, has arrived at St. Augustine. Dr. Barrows has been directed by the government t take medical charge, of the Indians con fined at Fort Marion. Messrs. Wyllie & Northrop are haying a handsome steamer finished at Palau:a es pecially for the Halifax, Hillsboro, Lagoon and Indian river. She is a twin screw pro peller, 80 feet long, 14j beam, coppered, 60-horse-power engines. XwU are at prespnt confined in Fort \ st- Augustine, 452 Apache Indians, "»mber 83 are bucks, 207 women rw 1, ™ children under 12 years of age. I ’ 1 m ? 8t , l JI,rt infants, have died since their arrival here last April. Robinson’s circus was leaving JvTumr. w ,cek,an attempt was made to kill G. M. Robinson, treasurer of the circus, by a negro. Robinson was on the lookout for the gang of thieves which have been following the circus, but, as he says, not connected therewith, when he came across the negro in one of the cars, and caught him by the collar. The negro broke loose, drew a revolver and fired at him five times, neither slid tuking effect. Col. Joseph II. Thornton, of Cincinnati, U., an honored war veteran, was for eighteen years a victim of that old sol diers’ complaint, chronic diarrheea. Two dozen bottles of Warner’s safe cure re- storeg his liver to health and cured his nil- nient. His daughter was very ill of an ob stinate disorder, which the best physicians failed to relieve. She had also palpitation o! the heart, intense pains in the head, nervous dyspepsia, and all her vital organs were involved. By three months’ faithful home treatment with Warner’s snfe cure, alone, she was fully restored to to health. That was two years ago. The cure was permanent. Col. Thornton will tell you it is true if you write him and en close a stumped envelop. Prosperity nt Hie South. Within the last Ybree months not less than sixty-two companies for mining and smelting have been organized, and mills, machine shops, railway companies, foundries, cotton, flour and other manufac tories have been constructed.—Memphis Avalanche. Captain George B. Wiltbark, 919 Spruce street, Philadelphia, Pa., if now on land, will, if von write nnd enclose’a stamp for reply, tell you thut “three years ago, when in Central America, he was prostrated with kidney and liver trouble of a very serious nature. He was delirious, skin very dark, liver enlarged one-third, stomach too sensitive for the simplest food.” Seven bottles of Warner's safe cure completely cured him and saved his life. A Home Prediction. If Carlisle is not elected president or vice-president, in 1888, he will he the next democratic United States senator from Kentucky. —Louisville Post. Kid Gloves, to be good and wear well, must be newly made of soft, olaslic skins and freshly tanned. If they lay in slock long llie skin becomes dry and harsh; it is sure to follow that a very large percentage will crack, and in many instances the seams part in putting on the first time. To prove Hie accuracy of the above statement, I have sold 25 dozen the past ten days and have not had one complaint—not one has ^proved faulty; nol one hits parted seams.
