News from the Three States Told In Brief Paregraphs. i Harrlblc Crime Committed In AhruhL-* Ho- nan Skeleton Unearthed nt Waynesboro-Terri ble Accident In Itlrmlnghnni-lten Among Sto- deate at Marion—Florida Notes. Heonrla, Mr. Price' was re-elected mayor of Ma con on Saturday. Three hundred negroes left Boyston Sat urday morning for Little Rock, Ark. One of Oglethorpe’s most posperous and energetic merchants reports that up to December 1 he had only collected $16 000 of $45,000 sold during the year, or just 33* per cent. The election for mayor and aldermen at Thomaston ^resulted the election of Colonel J. T. Tisinger for mayor, and T M Matthews, J. J. Oliphant, C.fc. Bethel and A. W. White, aldermen. At Thomaston at a conference of the Baptist churcR Saturday, Dr. W. A. Mont gomery, of Greensboro, was unanimously elected pastor, and Thursday the deacons received his formal acceptance of the call. several years since, is being circulated for signatures. Last week it had 300 signa tures. While the boring of Major Wilkins’ arte sian well, at Waynesboro, was being vigor ously pushed, some rather unexpected, and certainly strange things—portions of a hu man skeleton—were brought to light. The local geologists and scientists, it is said, are somewhat puzzled as to how the bones got to the depth of four hundred feet. Friday night at 9 o’clock, while most of the citizens of Marshalville were in attend ance at the closing exercises of the school at the academy, an alarm of fire wns heard which proved to be the burning of Mr. P. C. Affleck’s store and goods. The build ing owned bv Mr. Niles was not insured. Mr. Affleck had $1000 insurance on goods. Ten days ago George Parks and Monroe Smith, negroes, entered the house of Mr. J. B. McSpadden, near and. after robbing it of $250, set fire to it and burned it to the ground. Tho family of Mr. McSpadden was absent at the time. The negroes were shortly after arrested and lodged in jail nt Ringgold. Friday night a mob of fifty men broke into the jail, secured the prisoners and hanged them to a tree near the rail road a short distance below the town. On Friday evening Mr. S. B. Whipple, an old and respected citizen of Lawrence county, who moved to Cochran a year ago, and who has invested largely ‘in town property there, was on a scaffold helping to shingle a tenement house which he was having built, when the scaffold gave way precipitating Mr. Whipple to the ground. The fall was about ten feet and resulted in crushing and breaking every bone in his ankle to such an extent that amputution of the foot was found necessary. At an early hour Saturday morning the most diabolical crime ever committed within the curtilage of Augusta was brought to light. As John Hazel, a negro living at No. 12 Christ alley, walked into his garden he was horror-stricken to find in his path the mangled remains of a young babe. Near by, lying on a pile of leaves, was a large dog gnawing off' the head of the child winch be' had torn from the body. The negro immediately notified the author ities, who flocked in to gaze upon the re mains of the murdered little one. The body wns so mangled it was impossible to tell whether it was mulatto or white, but the general opinion of those in that com. munity is that it is the child of a mulatto girl living near. The dog dragged the body from some place near by through a hole in the fence into the yard, where he set to work to devour it. Some supposed that the woman murdered the child and buried it in her yard, where the dog dug it up and dragged it to that place to devour it; while others think that the woman left it there where the dog could get it, kill and devour it. The police have been working up the case, but as yet can obtain no proof to their supposition, hence have arrested no one. Alabama. Mobile had just twice as many inhabi tants in 1722 as in 1882. A man named Drake is wanted at Ox- more for seduction. John Calen, a barber by trade, fell under the wheels of a freight train on Water street in Mobile, Friday night, and had both feet crushed. Messrs. Roberts & Co., are having elec tric lights put in the Alabama car works at Anniston, and will work day and night to catch up with the large number of or ders now iu for cars. Governor Seay has approved the bill changing the time for lidding tho circuit court in Montgomery county. Under this law the court will meet on the first Mon day in January. Jesse Tomlinson, a young carpenter em ployed on thereof of the earshed at Bir mingham, fell from its very apex to the ground Saturday morning and broke ins left leg above the knae and left forearm, besides bruising himself pretty well all over. He is in a critical condition. Saturday morning out on the branch rail road from the Thomas furnace to its quarry, near Birmingham, ayoung white workman named James MeKuight lull oil a moving rock train and was run over. Physicians went out and amputated both his legs above the knee and his right arm above the elbow. They say it is possible he will live. John Brodrick, a white man, arrested at Mobile in January and afterward sent to Racine, Wis., to be tried for murder, but waa acquitted, returned to that section, and on Wednesday was knocked from the top of a Louisville and Nashville freight train as it passed through the bridge at Scranton, Miss. He fell between the ears and was run over and killed. ■While some students of the Howard col lege at Marion, were returning from a lire on Friday night, they were met by a crowa of negroes, thought to have been students of Lincoln Normal University, and in some way an altercation ensued between them. Students Keittand Prowell, of the Howard, were seriously out, the former just be neath the chin, the latter iu the hand ana wrist. The hurts are not dangerous, it is thought that only one negro did the cut ting, and tho students say that they ea identify him ami that they heard him cal - ed Brown. The. negro ran after the cuo ting. A warrant, has been issued lor Brown. Much excitement prevails amon, citizens and students. No negroes wei hurt. It appears that the latter were moo aggressive. Kid Cloves, to be good and wear well, must be newly made of soft, elastic skins and freshly tanned. If they lay in stock long the skin becomes dry aud harsh; it is sure to follow that a very large percentage will crack, and in many instances the seams part in putting on the first time. To prove the accuracy of the above statement, 1 have sold 25 dozen the past ten days and have not had one complaint—not one lias Jproved faulty; not one has parted seams.
