home in Oglethorpe county Sunday night.

President Plant, returned to Savannah

hotel in the latter city.
The melon growers of Brooks county are
making preparations to plant the largest
crop they have ever put In.
The rivers in Georgia are rising fast, in
consequence of the melting snows. The
rivers at Rome have risen three feet.
The old volunteer fire companies of
Augusta are disposing of their property bv
auction, preparing to disband and make
way for the new paid pepartment.
The artesian well being bored at the
Savannah waterworks struck a stream
Friday that is flowing 800,000 gallons a dav

preciably affect the flow of the first.
The convention of the state Sunday
school association will meet In Americas
next April. Mr. Reppard, president of the
association, was In Americus Saturday
making arrangements for the meeting. '
The membership of the north Georgia
conference churches is 70,800; increase for
the past year, 5495. Value of chnrch

Cyril Searle, the actor, who has been se
riously ill at the hospital at Savannah the
{ mst two months, has recovered sufficient-
y to make his appearance on the streets.
Charles D. Loud, a lawyer of Montgom
ery county, was taken to Savannah Mon
day by the deputy marshal charged with
opening letters belonging to other parties,
and is held for examination before the
United States commissioner.
Mr. William Woodard, living in Brooks
county, suffered the loss of his barn by fire,
and with it 250 bushels of corn, a quantity
of fodder and a good mule. The mule was
in a stall under the shed roof of the barn.
Mr. Ned Johnson, also in Brooks county,
lost his gin by Are Tuesday last.
John King, of Griffin, whose house was
burned Thursday night, thinks it was the
work of an Incendiary. He says he only
left two small chunks of fire in the house
and covered them up well before leaving.
He had about $35 in the house, and he
thinks some one stole his money and fired
the house.
A pet goat belonging to John Lindsay, of
Savannah, overturned a box containing
some papers and about fifty dollars in
greenbacks. He chewed up and swallowed
over twenty dollars of the money, and mu
tilated the remainder. In the hope of re
covering some of the money, Lindsay had
the goat killed and cut open, but the'mon-
ey was so badly masticated that it was no
good.
The two-story frame residence in Fletch-
erville of Mrs. M. J. Everett was burned
at 7 o’clock Monday night. The fire start
ed upstairs, and was of incendiary origin.
The house was unoccupied. The wails
were left standing by the excellent work
of the fire department. The insurance is
$2000 In the Georgia Home and $800 in the
German-Araerican, and is about two-thirds
of the loss.

The wet ticket carried the day in Green
ville on Monday.
Judge J. H. Houser, of Perry, Ga., and
Mrs. Jones were married Sunday at the re
sidence of the bride, in Greenville.
Since the securing of the Columbia
branch of the Louisville and Nashville to
Sheffield lots have advanced from $100 to
$300. About $60,000 worth of the city’s lots
were sold Monday-. One hundred and
ten thousand dollars worth have been sold
in the last three days.
On Monday Col. Robert McKee tendered
to Gov. Seay his resignation as state exam
iner of public accounts. He was appointed
to that position by Gov. O’Neal. He as
signed as reason for his resignation that in
justice to himself and family he could not
assume the responsibilities and discharge
the duties of the office satisfactorily.
It is now known that the negro who cut.
Btudents Keitt and Prowell at Marion Sat
urday night, and whose name was discov
ered to be Brown, is a member of the
senior class of Lincoln Normal University.
Officers of the law, together with Howard
students, who were able to identify him,
went out to the university after the cut
ting, but Brown had left.
A new railroad is now being surveyed,
which, if built, will give Anniston another
important railroad. An engineering corps
has been in the field for several weeks, hut
purposely all mention of the work lias
been kept out of the papers. The charter
name for the new road is the Cincinnati,
Georgia and Florida railroad company,
and was granted by the Georgia legislature
in 1885.
A negro man by the name of Jim Cook
went into Major John Allen’s jewelry
store at Anniston to sell a lot of sil ver
smith’s tools. It being so unusual lor a
negro to be in possession of such property,
and seeing that he knew nothing about the
use or value of the tools, led the major to
Buspect that the goods were stolen. He
reported the case to Captain Hunter, and
the darkey is now in the guard house
awaiting developments. Heelaims to have
found the tools in a box car at Leeds, Ala.
Floriiln.
The sloop Outing, on her voyage around
the world, arrived at Fernandina Friday.
Public school No. 1 at Fernandina is in
a flourishing condition. The attendance
of children is nearly 150.
The contractors for the experimental
well at Fernandina have driven down
some 225 feet of the pipe.
The furniture and effects of Count F. W.
BernstolF, son of the late Ptussian Ambus- i
sador to England, and who located m |
Maitland about a year ago, were sold on
December 9th by the sheriff, to satisfy sun
dry claims. The count and countess have
goDe to New York.
Last Tuesday morning about 3 o’clock
some unknown persons maliciously de
stroyed the plate-glass show-wludows of
J. Potsdamer’s store at Lake City. The
motive was evidently not robbery, as noth
ing was taken from the premises. The^
loss is estimated at $200.
The death warrant of George WaRmi-i
colored, convicted of the murder of Martin
House at the last fall term of the circuit
court, has been signed by the governor to
he executed at Quincy January 12. An
effort will be made to have the death
Punishment commuted to imprisonment
for life.
At Fernandina on Wednesday last the
employes of the motive power department
of the Florida railway and navigation
company gave G. L. Baltzell, the clnet
clerk of that department, a genuine and
substantial surprise in the shape of ail ele
gant gold and silver service of twenty-tour
pieces and a beautiful clock.
In the district court at Jacksonville, bat-
urday, an order was made diree mg the

International Telephone.
After tedious negotiations between the
French and Belgian authorities, the long-
talked-of telephonic line connecting Paris
and Brussels has finally been determined
upon. It is expected that the work will
be completed some time in January, 1887.
The charge will be three francs for every
five minutes. Thus will another tie be ad
ded to the many that now unite so closely
these capitals.
