BASF. BALL A SUrtE THING.’ The Southern Loiixuf All Mmr „f WnyN. Savannah News. Tim committee appointed at the opera home meeting on Monday nlalit to ean v.w, for stock to the new base ball association is actively at work, and it is expected t v the full amount—$5000 —will be raised hv Friday night, when the association will he organized. De The statement telegraphed from to the New York Hemhf that the 8,m h League will not play base hall next seaso is oil a par with Atlanta’s policy in everv thing. After last year’s disgraceful S agement, and because the citizens will not put their money behind another such or ganization as thut which came near dis rupting the league, the Atlanta element is using its influence by sending out false re- ports to break up the league next season If Atlanta does not want to play ball let her step down and out qhietly and not ut- tempt to damage the interests of everv o her Club in the league, livery other club besides Atlanta, or except, perhaps. Macon is organizing and getting things in shape for next year. Mobile mid Birmingham are both anxious to secure a franchise ami stund ready to till nny vacancies. If At lanta and Macon want to drop out let them do so and let Birmingham and Mo bile take their places. The schedule committee will meet at Chattanooga early in January, and the mutter can be settled then or even earlier The talk about the southern league troinc to nieces is all stuff. b b The only trouble is that the clubs nre slow in moving. It is less than a month before the forfeit money will have to be put up, and as the amount exacted is no mere bagatelle it is important that clubs should make their arrangements to til's end promptly. The sooner the money is placed in the hands of the president the better, as once on deposit there is little probability of its being forfeited, and the league will begin to take on new life, A great amount of valuable time is being lost in the securing of good playing material, and it is imperative that the guarantee money be sent, in at the earliest opportu nity. The guarantee fund once in bank and the fact published to the world, will great ly facilitate the signing of good men, who now are averso to making contracts with ■clubs because of the uncertain condition of the league’s affairs. There is any num ber of good men on the market, despite the avariciousnoss of the league and asso ciation managers, but they are not likely to attach their signatures to contracts when thero i3 no nbsolute certainty of a club maintaining its organization too sea son through. The fact that the new Cleve land association team has received .300 ap- § Mentions for place is pretty strong evi- ence that players by the legion are .still on the market. However, the quicker the southern clubs secure their quota of men the better. The placing of the forfeit money is the initial step to the success of the league, and will have its weight in putting at rest the numerous lying reports floating through the press as to the stand ing of the organization. SEEMS TO BE BREAKING UP. The United I.nbor Pnrtj of Philadelphia In Kore Trouble. Philadelphia, December 15.—The indi- •cations are that the newly formed United Labor party in this city will go to pieces before a labor candidate for mayor is nominated for the spring municipal con test. The split in the convention hold last night over the admission as a delegate of ■Gorsucb, the anarchist, threatens the most serious results to the infant party. Not loS3 than thirty Germans, each having a considerable following in his local organi zation, withdrew from tho convention. The German socialistic element in tho party claims that the knights of labor are ■endeavoring to mould the party and the platform according to their own wishes without regard to the interests of labor in general. This is the rock on which wise political leaders of tho other parties pre dicted the labor movement would go to pieces. In addilion to the contentions and wmriglings between diverse elements in the new party itself, another difficulty arises in the shape of outside, influence upon the ward leaders by politicians of the •other parties. One of the leaders in the movement said"to-day that he was becom ing disgusted with the condition of affairs, and that if he found his suspicions of political trickery in the ranks verihed, he would immediately withdraw from the ■new oarty. The fact that Henry George, to whom tho declaration of principles was submvnitted last week, expressed his dis approval of the document has brought discouragement to many of the most en thusiastic labor advocates, aim it is an open secret that they are seriously con sidering withdrawal from the. movement. There is no intention to nominate candi- ■dates for the municipal offices untiil tho tnidolo of January. At thut lime, u the jmrtv still hangs together, an attempt will be made to decide on a candidate lor the mayoralty and adopt a platform. But the most serious obstacles stand in the way of a nomination, inasmuch as nobody has yet been proposed or talked of who could coin- muml a maioritv of the labor votes.I jL ATLY INQUIRER - SUN: COLUMBUS, GEORGIA, SATURDAY WffiMNn.
