JiNIK’8 CHRISTMAS PBAYKIt.
BY ELLA DAUB.
•Ti» the week before Christmas, and where’er we
may ko
The great city’s streets are alive and aglow
With the bustle of people, that pop to and fro.
The stores and shop-windows are voicing the
Of commerce and her omnipotent will
Tlml thought, UlC W ° rl<1 with a fl * r -rcachlng
And brings to the seeker the treasure he soueht
There are marvels of beautv In color and urt
That speak to the sense and the soul and' the
ThCr< rare t0yB f ° r thB chlldren ’ an<1 quaint jewels
To crown with their lustre tho proud ard the
There^are gilts that are cheap and gifts that aro
And oceans of gifts for this time of good cheer.
For the cry is abroad all over the land
That the Love-king is coming with bounteous
And the little ones pause in their frolic and nlav
To tell ol hia goodness, in merriest wav, *
Till the soft cheeks are flushed and the eyes are
all bright,
With wonders wrought out in the darkness of
And the tree heavy-laden with fruits of delight.
B^^roughaU this Joy with its heart-beat and
There will run the sad strains of sorrow and ill
And o’er all these symbols of Christ-love divine
Will be traces of shadow marks over the shine.
With gown that is tattered, and shoes that are
With a pale, pleading face, half famished and
worn,
Little Janie stands still like one in a dream
Aud drinks in the charm of this ravishing scene
Till tho meaning it bears burns into her brain,
And touches her soul with an exquisite pain.
Then seeking at last her poor wretched home,
She climbs the long stairs in darkness alone—
She reaches the room aud opens the dour,
And there in the silence—she kneels on the floor.
4 O, Santa Claus dear,
Do please to come near,
I’m little aud poor and weak,
But I want so much to speak,
To tell you how mamma and ltobby aud 1
Are sorry so often aud have to cry,
’Cause my papa comes home you see,
And is not the real papa he used to be.
So mamma you know, must go far away,
And must sit and sew, through all the long day
And Robby must spend the whole of his time
In trying to earn a penny or dime,
For there’s bread to buy, and there’s rent to pay,
And papa drinks ail of his money away.”
O Santa Claus, dear, you’re rich and you’re good.
And I’d like to ask, if only I could,
Far some nice waim shoes for Robby and me,
And for my dear mamma, a whole pound of tea;
But the best thing of all, far better than these,
If you only would, Santa Claus, please,
Just make my papa to love us again,
And make him as good as the best of men.”
Then Janie sleDt as the sorrowing stars looked in
On the little wan face, so pinched and hollow
and thin.
But the prayer that the poor child prayed that
night.
Has pierced through sin. like a shaft of light,
For, unnoted, the half sober father lias heard
The pathos and power of every word.
The Christmas chimes ring through the clear
wintry air,
And herald a morning most perfect and air,
And Janie wakes up with a wondering cry,
As the light of a fire on the hearth meets her eye,
And bundles and parcels, piled ever so high.
Her mama looks down with a smile on her face,
That blesses the home with a heavenly grace,
And in Hobby’s bright eye a deep joy she can
trace.
But better than all, come these words to her ear.
As a strong, loving arm draws her closer and
near:
*‘Henceforth will I stand, by God’s help, a man
among men,
My Janie, my darling, I’ll be your real papa
again.”

If there is one season of the year in
which suggestions are more welcome
than another, this istheone. Therefore,
presuming on this fact, i am going to
load you down with them, according,
you, however, the privilege of turning to
the funny man’s column when the burden
becomes too great.
My first suggestion is t hat if you have a
mother-in-law who is at all times specially
interested in your nocturnal movements,
frequently expressing great solicitudu for
your health, gi'-e her a handsome black
silk dress. For this purpose you will find
Kcgetta Hand lsiom Silk superior to any
thing in this market. If this does not
have the desired effect, your ease is a bad
one and i would advise you to go west.
If you want to give your wife a present
that will please her and at the same time
have the approval of all the neigh hors, 1
have some elegant Pick Loe.k blankets at
$14 and $lo per pair. Select for your
daughter a set of boxes in plush for
handkerchiefs and gloves, have l.otli of
them filled, and you will have a present
that will he shown with pride a hundred
times.
Now, young ladies, give mo a moment
of your valuable time, and I will give
you just one suggestion that will make
your fortune if you act upon it.. I have
some of tin* finest silk umbrellas with
the most exquisite handles, some of the
prettiest walking ennes with solid silver
heads ever brought to Columbus. Gel
one of either of these and you will get
your money back,with double compound
interest.
Young man, give mamma and papa
a merry Christmas and many happy re
turns, and select for your sweetheart the
prettiest tiling you can find among our
elegant ornaments for the bureau nnd
dresser.
Don’t forget the cook. She is the most
important person in the house and the
least appreciated and most abused. Kvery
one from the baby up should give her u
present. The housemaid, nurse and man
should not he forgotten. Remember ill-
used servants render poor services. If
there is nothing in the above to fit your
ease, call at the Red Star stores, I l.'lfi and
11II8 Broad street, and tell us how much
money you want to spend in presents,
and we’ll lit you up in a few minutes.
