DAILY ENQUIRER • SUN: COLUMBUS, GEORGIA, FRTUAY MORMNG, DECEMBER 24, 1886 TI1K (llUlsrMAN KltlMVNIK. nv 8 I.MlIt.NCli, Old 8:mta Claus sat in his icy hall On the seventeenth day of Dccember- The brownies and elves came around at his call And thus he merrily said to nil: ' “Now brownioa and elves, remember— ‘Tis only a week ere I harness my team My sleigh bo light and my reindeer white O'er ice and o’er snow . To the earth to go, And the little earth children will shout and scream With all their might In wild delight, “ 'Tis Christmas Eve! 'tis Christmas Eve! Old Santa Claus comes to-night!” Now hie ye thither the week before, Take your cobweb hammocks too— Swing them high in the chimney tops No matter for moonshine, smoke or dew For rnina that pelt, or storms that blow, ’ And list to the children's talk below. List when they sleepily come upstairs, To wash their faces and any their prayers In their sweet little night gowns, fair and clean, Aim from their innocent prattle, glean The dearest wish of each guileless heart— That you to me may those wishes impart Oil Christmas Eve, when I rein my deer At each tall chimney-top, whispering clear “Any good children as’eep down here?** Now lne ye thither, nor /alter, nor pause, And leave the rest to tld Santa Claus. The brownies fluttered and wavered away, Thro* the morning mist, thro’the evening gray, In little fur coats like the chimney soot. Each little red face like a glovviug coal. A little hook on o ich tiny Foot And a velvet cap on each elflsto poll, Fluttering all tile house-tops about, Over the chimneys, in and out, And the folks said, seeing their myriad flight, v\ hat swarms of bats are out to-ufgnt I” So-after the seventeenth day of December, A brownie swings in each chimney Hue— Remember, little children, remember, lie swings, and ho sings, and he listens, too - He watches the Christinas letters burn As each little smiler takes its turn, Catching their scrolls as they upward fly, •Scanning them close with ids keen little eye— Hobnobbing gaily with sociable rats, Warring with dangerous house-top cats. But when the little ones come upstairs, To wash their faces and say their prayers, He slips from his hammock as low ns lie dares To the circle fair round the nurser / lire, And listens -ami peeps at the laughing choir, When the clear little children are naiiglitylor cross The wee bonnie brownie is quite at a loss, Anti sulks in the chimney top fueling ridiculous, Wondering wiiat he shall say to .-it. Nicholas On Christmas Eve, when he reins his deer At each tall chimney-top whispering clear, 44 Any good children asleep down here?” He beams as bright as the glowing blaze When only mirthful and gentle phrase He hears. lie doesn’t mind racket and fun (It wouldn’t be Christmas—they wouldn't be boys Or healthy girls either without any noise) So long as he hears when the frolic is done A silence sweet as n blessing slied On the glistening gold of each bended head, Unbroken except by a murmuring voice, Till prattling Lila lisps out unawares, “Tun’tl p’ayfor ole Sauty Tause too in my p’ay’s?” Then brownie is happy, he chuckles and sings, As up in his cobweb hammock he swings, Waiting till Christ mas evening brings The eight reindeer and the sleigh full of toys, And jolly old Santa Claus, At each tall chimney-top whispering clear, 44 Any good children asleep down here?” Too bate. For this purpose you will find Regottu Hand Loom Silk superior to miy- I thing in this market. If this does not have the desired effect, your ease is a bad one and t would advise you to go west. If you want to give your wife a present that will please her and at tho same time have the approval of all the neighbors, I have some elegant Pick Lock blankets at !fl t and $t"> per pair. Select for your daughter a set of boxes in plush for handkerchiefs and gloves, have both of them filled, and you will have a present that will he shown with pride a hundred times. Now, young ladies, give me a moment of your valuable time, and I will give you just one suggestion that will make your fortune if you act upon it. I have some of the finest silk umbrellas with the most exquisite handles, Home of the prettiest walking canes with solid silver heads ever brought to Columlms. (let one of either of these and you will get your money back, with double compound interest. Young man, give mamma and papa a merry Christinas and many happy re turns, and select for your sweetheart the prettiest thing you can find among our elegant ornaments for the bureau and dresser. Don’t forget the cook. She is tho most important person in the house and the least appreciated and inostuhused. Kvery one from the baby up should give her a present. The housemaid, nurse and man should not he forgotten. Remember ill- used servants render poor services. If there is nothing in the above to fit your ease, call at the Red Star stores, I l!((i and 1138 Broad street, and tell us how much money you want to spend in presents, and we’ll fit you up in a few minutes.
