T I)mdo!?w "^“'hoards or restrictions. Its perfect naturalness. It will probably remain a bit of the country wherethe city can teel at home. I do not remember see- If* W policemen about. Indeed, Boston has but few visible to the naked eye, which rather gives one a sense of security than otherwise. 1 he new park may never be come a show place, but Boston does not care for show. The fine houses on the Dack bay may bo as conventional as the same class of houses elsewhere—the rich and luxurious and fashionable are much the same the world over—but the life of the people is in the multitude who are not rich. One does not perceive that the Bos tonians are more epigrammatic, after the fashion of Mr. Howell’s bright people, than the rest oi mankind, but they are more in dependent, and in some respects more rational. They lead their own lives and think for themselves about many things. It they are not as universally intellectual as is sometimes believed, they have a reverence for intellect which is an ad mirable corrective of many follies. They have become used to a literary atmosphere, and the consciousness of it is mixed up with a good deal of latent pride. They do not point with exultation to their statues and monuments, which are mostly exe crable, but they show’ you the houses of their great men. The young women are as pleasant as any to be found. They think too well of them selves. perhaps, to imagine they were de signed for mere pegs to hang draperies upon. That they are, as a rule, excessive ly bookish is, I think, not true. Boston women are of all things practical and capable. The multitudes who take care of themselves and earn an independence is in evidence. These workers are happy and self-sustained. The old maid is not the “meeching,” humble-minded creature she ■once was. Society has adjusted itself to the useful single woman, who makes her own way and lives her own unfettered life. Whether this be a good or bad sign of the times, it must be accepted as a fact. It can best be studied in and about Boston. Many, perhaps most, of these women are happy and active. They have fitte themselves to a new state of things, which, it must be confessed, rules out the man to a large extent. Marriage does not come into the calculations of many, for having good mathematical heads, they know that in a region where the number ■of women is considerably in excess of the number of men matrimony is for many an impossibility. The student of social science inay deal with the questions which lie be hind this state of things. The woman concerns herself with exist ing facts. She has entered upon a new career within the last tew years. She has become independent, and has so much confldence in her own powers as to think that if God made her, he meant her. Her life is her own, and she is wise to make it as rich and enjoynble as she can. These women form not the least attractive phase of Boston life. The leaven of cul ture among them is not too overpowering to be good and wholesome. If not as eager and aspiring as their western sisters, they are less superficial. There is no place where solid, genuine qualities stand for more than they do in the Puritan city. The provincialism of Boston is best shown in its self-content with its news papers. These sheets have everything in them—all kinds of heterogeneous and ill- assorted material—but they seem to tell you nothing of what is going on in the world outside of Boston. They lack breadth; to indulge in a poor pun are merely side issues. Still they go all over New England, and are devoutly read in the remotest hamlets. New York, to these people, is what the barbarous countries were to the old Greeks. From its very conceit the city has a right to call itself a native product, an outgrowth of the soil, for no sense of nationality or even of indi vidual excellence grows up without con ceit. | One Fashion Crowds Another Out. An exchange calls attention to the fact that it is no longer fashionable for women to faint. This grows out of the habit peo ple have of pouring water on one’s bangs. There will be no more fainting until bangs are unfashionable.—Macon Telegraph, The discovery and introduction of Moxie Nerve Food has proved a blessing to thou sands of people suffering from nervous affections. They have found immediate relief, and recommend it to their triends as the most reliable preparation for the cure of nervousness, sleeplessness, and that tired, worn out feeling. Try Moxie ; it s only 60 cents a bottle. Tile Worst that Could Be. Lord and Lady Colin Campbell are con demned to remain husband and wile. That is a heavy sentence.—New xork Graphic. Advice to Mothers.—Mbs. Winslow’s Soothing Syrup should al ways be used when children are cutting teeth, it re lieves the little sufferer at once; it produces natural, quiet sleep by relieving the child from pain, and the little cherub awakes as “bright as a button.” It is very pleasant to taste. It soothes the child, softins the gums, allays all pain, relieves Pates the bowels and is the best known remedy for diarrhoea, whether arising from teething or other causes. ONE OF LINCOLN’S STORIES. What Groat Abraham Once Told to (ioacral Logau at the White Houne. president that Logan is here with some im portant dispatches from Grant.’ Pretty soon the messenger came back and told me to walk up. When I got into the room Mr. Lincoln was sitting in a chair, with one foot on a table, and his head thrown back. A barber was iust getting through shaving him. He told mo to take a seat andlhe would be ready to talk to mein a few minutes. The barber finished the shaving and went to work on the hair. Mr. Lin coln saw me glance at his foot. It was much swollen. Both of his feet, in fact, were in a bad condition. I said nothing, but he commenced talking about them. “ 'They remind me,’ said he, ‘of a man in Sangamon county who made a pretty bad horse trade. The animal was in awful condition, but the farmer got him home. About three weeks afterward one of his neighbors met him and asked him how his new horse was coming on. “Oh, first rate,” said the farmer, “he’s putting on flesh fast. He’s fat now uu to his knees.” That’s my Ax.’ Since then,” said General Logan, “1 have accepted as authentic all Lincoln stories.” A 11031K IN HEAVEN’. BY MBS. A. P. LUCAS. Ofttimes in my imagination, I can see that heavenly home; Gotl sitting upon His holy throne, With angels kneeling ’round His feet, Singing His praises incessantly; Tell me, is not this joy complete? Among that joyous, happy baud, Jly dear departed friends I can see Standing just ncross the river, Watching and waiting to receive me. O, how oft have I in my dreams Heard my dead father’s and mother’s voice, Asking God to bless their orphan child, And make me, in His love, rejoice. Hear Thou my prayer, O, Jesus Christ, When dentil comes take me over there; Send an angel down from above, To guide me up lien veil’s bright stair. A WclI-Houndeil Figure. During the years that i have been afflicted I have tried almost everything claimed to be a specific for Dyspepsia in the. hope of finding something that would afford per manent relief. I had about made up my mind to abandon all medicines when I no ticed an endorsement of Simmons Liver Regulator by a prominent Georgian, a jurist whom I Knew, and concluded to try its effects in my case. I have used but two bottles, and am satisfied that I have struck the right thing at last. I felt, its beneficial effects almost immediately. Unlike all other preparations of a similar kind, no special instructions are required as to what one shall or shall not eat. This fact alone ought to commend it to all troubled with Dyspepsia. J. N.
