The Honorable F. Brooke.
It is said that Mr. Kremer has agreed to
fight Mr. Clay by substitute. Who is the
cliivitlric champion ot the Hon. Gentlemau
we have not learned.
GENERAL JACKSON.
Ve are not in the habit of eulogising this distinguished man—
hr is notour choice .as the President of those United Stairs—no
more is Mr. Adams—but his present deportment is so much com
i niendod in various letters Irom Washington, that it is but justice
to notice it.— ( lie writer of a letter to Philadelphia states, that
he was present when Gen. Jackson was informed of Mr. Clay’s
: intention to support *}r. Adams.—The General was uuimpassion
ed; and coolly observed, that there were two things of which Mr.
Clay could not deprive him—one was the high Junior he had al
ready received in the voles of the people ; the other was, the
pleasure of spending his life on his own farm in Tennessee. •
Another letter, now before us. states that Gen. J. advises his
friends “to be calm and let the election result as the people’s re
presentatives choose to make it,” declaring his determination to
be defeated, rather than make compromises, or coalitions of any
kind whatsoever.
Another letter states, that when it was suggested Jo h*m by a
friend to sec Mr. Crawford, he replied that ire thought it wrong
o! tins juncture of time. This, we understand from unqueuiona
bl« auipurity, is Mr. Crawford’s opinion.
Mr. t rawford’g course throughout those trying times, has been
precisely sue h as it ought to be—firm, high-minded, above the
breath of suspicion itself. If any thing were wanting to raise
him in our estimation, and to attach us to the interests of the man
whom we have so ardently supported, it is the deportment which
lie now exhibits. He lias declined all negotiations—he will
make no bargains for office—he will accept no office under Adams
or Jackson. We do not speak upon this subject at random—but
most advisedly. Were we at liberty, to develops the facts,
j which have reached us from unquestionable sources, we should
J satisfy the people that he wat a man whom they would delight to
; honor, ' (T "lnquirer.
Our readers will smile upon reading the
above extract. How remarkable it is ttiat
Gen. J. should keep himself cool—and how
praise-worthy and considerate to advise his
friends to “ let the election result as the peo
ple’s Representatives choose to make it” !! !
