CONSTITUTION,
TJJJC CO Ml Si ELECTIONS.
Turn (all elections will soon be com
menced, Kentucky leading off The
state is thoroiiicnly democratic, and the
coming election would lack general
interest weru it not the doty of the new
legislature to name Senator M'Creery's
suc cessor. There are many candidates
for his seat, with no clear indication as
to who is to be the fortunate mao.
Senator M'Creery's term does not ex-
pire until 1871).

cations are that the democrats will
elect their state ticket by handaome
majorities. Maine's annual election
occurs on the tenth, closing the Sep-
temlier list
In October come Ohio and Iowa, in
both of which governors and legisla
ture! are to be chosen The Ohio leg*
iklature is to elect a senator to till the
Mat now occnpi d by Stan
ley Matthews, and on that ac
count, if no other, a deep interest is
taken in the result. There is a per
vading feeling that as gues Ohio so
goes the union this year. If the demo
crats sweep Ohio in Octolier, their
November bsltlee are as good as won.
Our inends in Ohio are lull «>! high ex
pectalions, and those expeclationa will
not lie permitted to lessen work and
orgsnix d ion. G dorado will also elect a
legislature in Octolier.
In November, New York, Msssachn-
setts, Minnesota, Mississippi, New Jer
sey, Texan, Virginia and Missouri elect
state office rs and legislatures; and Lou
isians, Pennsylvania and South Caro
lina legislatures.
NOTES OM THE SITUATION.
A careful study of the new* from the
several centres of conflict shows that
to bind rich and poor together than
any acts of beneficence.
Let men of all classes sympathize
. with and encourage each other. As a
the communistic period of the labor contemporary jnstly says, cities must
troubles is probably pissed, and that jdevhe large and comprehensive plans
the era of consultation and compromise j for the improvement of their condi-
iw at hand. The r oters are about! tion, for the removal of vice and intern*
' perance, for the building up of their
manufactures and trades. What is
everybody's business, as has been just
ly said, is nobody's business, but
community, in one sense at least, has
but a single soul, and it is the butinca
of the todividnaJ, as well as of the con
Crete mass to help on with the work of
restoration. We should haves practi
cal brotherhood, and show it in recog
nizing tne interdependence of one class
of the community upon another, and
in doing all within our power to grve
every man opportunities of usefulness
and happiness to himself and the com
munity.”

to give way to the strikers-tbe crest,
urea cf destruction who never work to
the men of families who are anxious to
work at living prices. The brutes who
gloried in the havoc at New York in
1863, at Paiis in 1871 and at Pittsburg
in 1877, will two be deprived of further
opportunity for mischief. At all points
where Mrious trouble is possible, the
people are alert, armed and organized,
and at most of such points the strikers
are co-operating with them in the
preservation of property. We look
therefore for an early and satisfactory
settlement of tne entire trouble. We
Iogk for it bees use reason is supplanting
communism, because society is rising
*. up to put down plunder and arson^nd
because the honest striker is now dis
posed to consider the needs cf bis em
ployer as well aa his own grievances.
There is to be no com
promise with crime, but
there is everywhere sympathy
springing up for hard-work* d and
poorly-paid employes. The companies
that resolutely faced the mob are dis
posed to listen to deputations from the
strikers. There have been no conces
sions to the demoniacia! communists;
there should ba none; and the time will
soon come when the last one of tneir
ringleaders will be hunted down and
brought to justice. Not one should be
permitted to escape. All desire mag
nanimity of treatment for the strikers;
none for iho rioera—nothing but
hemp for their leaders.
In the south there is some liule

BXTBE-ENT J TION •
Why, of course. Euch county should by all
means have at least one representative. If s
cou . ty is not worth this much consideration,
then it ought not to bs a separate comity. An
other fact must not be overlooked. If there are
only a few representatives,’he strugale for those
places will be heated, andalllhe political tricks
will be resorted to for the purpose of securing
them. Many good men who arc no 1
piofiuiocal poliuciaus are now found in ih,
hou e eveiy year, becanue where there ate w
many places there is room cnougn for them to
be selected without effort ou their parts. They
are in.aluable in the legislature, but they
would not make a struggle to come h re. If
the house i> reduced to seventy five, you will
find very few members who are uot proftsduqal
politicians. Even if the contrary effect is hud,
and as the advocates contend, only the wisest
ana best men iu the slate will be selected. I
think it an argument against reduction I don't
want to see the house made an aristocracy
Make the senate such if you waut to. but let

one connected with the legislature. No man
