The Enemy’s Strategy.—The efforts
to defeat, ruin forever, and kill the Dem
ocratic party, are numerous, deep laid,
persistent, and pressed vigorously and
earnestly by the party in power. Those
who wish the defeat of the party, are
trying to get it to take some plausible but
suicidal step from which it can never re
cover, but which will inevitably prove
fatal.
The first was the New Departure pro
gramme. This movement was one of
magnitude and looked tin latening to
many. The Sun was the firat paper in
the South, if not in the Union, to attack
and boldly fight that heresy. It is dead,
and is no longer in the way.
The next was Passivism, or Possumism,
but it was so sickly that it died soon
alter its birth. It made but Httle show,
and attracted but tittle attention during
its feeble and short lived existence.
Next came the proposition for the
Democrats to unite with the so-called
Liberal Republicans” for the para
mount object of defeating Grant in the
next Presidential race. The organs of t.bia
sly movement earnestly represent the dan
gerous ambition of the military tyrant,
and lustily call upon us to ignore our
principles for the present, and help the
disaffected squad of Radicals to beat
Grant. This ridiculous proposition has
met with but tittle favor, aud is fast sub
siding. It was but a slight wave—not
amounting to a clever sized billow on the
great sea of public opinion. It was very
foolish in any one ever to have proposed
it, and those who did so are beginning
to see it.
We cannot notice all the schemes and
tricks to bring a Trojan horse into the
citadel and strongholds of the Democrat
ic camp, or to induce the party to for
sake their own defenses aud walk over to
the enemy’s camp. The latest is a puerile
effort to weaken the party—especially in
the South. It originated in this city—
in a movement to celebrate Henry
Clay’s birthday. It has been fore
shadowed for months in the columns of
the New Era. It proposes to revive the
old Whig party, or something like it.
Hon. B. H. Hill is believed to be its
chief inspiration and director. Thos.
A. R. Nelson and John Baxter, of Ten
nessee, have taken up the movement.
The Banner of Nashville, which bolted
the Democratic nomination in the last
Congressional campaign, leans that way,
heartily applauds the proposition” to
have “a convention of the Conservative
masses of Tennessee,” and favors “a con
sultative meeting of the Conservative
citizens of Tennessee.” Yes; anything
to defeat the Democracy—even if it re
sult iu the re-election of Grant—the es
tablishment of a Dynasty—a consolidated
centralized Imperial Government, and
the end of Liberty! Anything! anything!
Of course, this whole movement ia inten
ded to draw off the old Whigs from that
cordial support which they have given
the Democratic party for years. It is
intended to induce them to aid in defeat
ing the only party that has the correct
principles and integrity of purpose—the
patriotism—the good of the countiy at
heart—the organization, aud the power,
if properly directed aud deservedly sup
ported by patriots, to preserve Constitu
tional Liberty on this Continent. The
defeat of this party is the defeat of
Liberty—it may be forever. It is plac
ing more firmly in power.the Bond Bings
and plunderers, and the corruptionists of
the age, and it may be perpetuating
their rule.
This is the work which old Whigs are
to be called upon to perform—to assist in
consummating. /
It is understood that a company of
Radicals and others are forming to take
the New Era newspaper in this city in
charge, pat a large amount of money into
the concern, and run it on a high press
ure principle during [the coming sum
mer aud fall; that Mr. Beu Hill
is to be its real editor, and control
its politics; that it is to be run under his
direction and supervision, aud that he
has Gubernatorial aspirations—expecting
to make a desperate effort to defeat the
Democracy in the coming campaign,
and succeed to the Chair now so worthi
ly filled by Gov. Smith. The whole is a
scheme to defeat the Democratic party,
and that means the re-election of Gen.
Grant.
Assault. — On Sunday
Dangerous
evening last,some person unknown, made
an attack on Dr. H. L. W, Craig, as he
was passing from Decatur street to his
boarding house on Line street. The at
tack was with a knife—the would be as
sassin making a heavy thrust, which cut
the Doctor’s coat, and would no doubt
have proved fatal if it Lad taken effect
in big body. He struck the man a blow
on the head with a heavy cane, which
caused him to leave in a hurry.
Fire in Culyebton.—We learn that the
Culverton Railroad Depot buildiDg in
Hancock county, was burned on last
