THE^ DAlIiT EXAMINER.
ATLANTA, AUGUST 3,1857.
THE IVKaEOR’l REVENGE.
The following deeply interesting story wn
related by Or. Oibeon in one of his lectures
before the medical okas of the University of
Pennsylvania. The hare ef the Instructive
story is Vreals, one of tbo most eminent sur
geons of the 16th century:
Andre Veeafc first law the fight in tho city
of Brussels. His father was an apothecary
attached to the sefvioe of the Princess Mar-
^ garet, aant of the Emperor Charles V.,and
Ooveraese of the low cotfitrlea
Up to the period when Teeale first rendered
himself coospicaoas, the anatomy of the hu
man body wn Imperfectly understood as
'arcely to merit that the term ecieoee should
Jk« applied to the dim and confused ideas rela
te to it VbboW was the first to brook
through the mantels with which ignorance
and bigotry had crippled the march of science!
.annotating with admirable courage and con
stancy the dbgaat, the terror, and even tha
perils inseparable from the description of labor
to which he had devoted himself, he was to be
seen whole dayi and nights In the cemeteries,
surrounded by the Catering remains of moral
ity, or hovering about the gibbets, and disput
ing with the vulture for his prey, in order to
compose a petted skeleton Cram the remains
or the executed criminals, left to be devoured
by the carrioD-bitd.
4 It was during his sojourn at Basle, after his
return from Italy, Vesale first beheld at the
house of Hans Holbein, the painter, Isabella
Van Bteenwik, who was destined to exorcise
some influence over his future life. He was
scarcely twenty eight years of age, and al
ready bad attained the anmmit of well directed
ambition.
The family of Yan Stcenwik was a wealthy
and honorable one, far superior to that of Ye-
sule in birth and fortune; bat the distinguished
position the latter bad acquired for him.elf,
entitled him to an alliance even more exalted.
The son of the Princess Margaret’s apothecary
would have been rejected by the rich harlaem
burgher, but, as tho Emperor's first physician,
was accepted as the most eligible sou-in-law.
The marriage solemnized, Vesale, accompan
ied by bis young bride, set oO for Seville,
where Charles then held his court.
Though she loved her husband, there was so
much awe mingled with her affections as to
throw an appearance of restraint over her de
meanor towards him, even in the privacy of
domestic life. The very nature of his profes
sion and occupation was calculated to increase
that awe, and even to create, some degree of
repngnanos in a shrinking mind, which noth*
lug but strongaffectlon could overcome.
Isabella’s nature required skillful drawing
out and tender fostering. Vesale unfortunate
ly mistook her temerity for coolness, and re
sented it accordingly. This led to cnstmngo-.-
meat, on her part, which he attributed to dis
like, and, jealous distrust at last took po t x»sion
-oi his bouI, /i
Vesale’s boose became the resgrt of All that
was noble and gallant in Seville, and ho for a
time, believed bis own scientific conversation
to be tho attraction. At first the yonng wif e
_ showed her nsaal calm indifference to the ad»
" miration that followed wherever she was seen;
bn at last something in her manner and conn-
teancc, whenever one particular person appear
ed, or his name wob mentioned, betrayed that
there did exist a being who had discovered tbo
secret of cansing the blood to ilow more tu
multuously through her veins. That person
was Dan Alva de Solis; and os he was young
and handsome the suspicions of Vesale were
painfully aroased. He took silent note of the
unusual emotions that agitated Isabella when
ever tho noblomev was in her presence.
The general vfkiuct of Don Alva was cal
culated to baffle suspicion, being marked by
indiffereaoe. This would have missed the val
iant husband, and hod be not on oao occasion,
when his book -was turned toward Don Alva,
perceived him, in an oppoeite mirror, fix bis
kindling eyes upon Isabella, with an expression
not to be mistaken, while she grew red and
pale by tarns, and then, os though unable to
surmount her agitation, rose and left the room.
Shortly afterwards, Veaale received an anony
mous uotfc sgjUKgU
•Look to you wife and Don Alva de Solis,
and be not deceived byeppearanoe. They on
ly wait a fitting opportunity to dishonor you.
Even now he carries about him tho gloves she
dropped for him at mass.’ * _ _
Vesale shat himself np to ponder over t he
moat effectual means ef avenging himself. His
ojBolution was soon token. Having establish*
' *ed schools of anatomy at Son Lacar and Cor
dova, he obtained tbs emperor’s permission to
visit them, quitted Seville for that purpose, bat
returning tbe same night concealed himself iu
a tenement, belonging to himself, at tome dis
tance from his abode In Alcasor, which wen
devoted to tin doohie purpose of a laboratory
and dissecting room. He had token no pur
pose into his yengegooe, and ho listened to hiq
own counsel. * V
At dark on tha following oveniug he i :Ued
forth, muffled to hie eyes in a woman's mantle
hoed, and left a noteat Don Alvu's babibita-
tion, oomuning on embroidered glove of Isa-

Hi
tory daring his absence. Be at the gate an
hour after midni hi, and yon will be admitted
on pronoanc ing the name of Isabella. ’
Tbe assignment was promptly kept by Don
AIvu.i At an hour past milnight be left his
house, alone; bat he never returned to it.—
Whither he had gone, none conld my, nor
conid any trace of him ever be discovered. It
was supposed ho must have missed his footing,
nrd fallen into the Unudalquiver, near wlityi
hu abode was situated, and that fats body bed
been swept by the waves into the ocean.
Such an occurrence was calculated to pro
duce a great sensation in the place where it
bad happened; and Vesale recalled three weeks
after by the illness of bis wife, found tbe dis
appearance of Don Alva the theme of every
tongue. The altered appearance of Isabella
was attributed, by Vesale, to grief for the
mysterious absence of Don Alva,’ and that
conviction took from him ail pity for her (of
ferings.
It chanced to be tbo festival of Santa Isa
bella, ami to do honor to her patron saint, as
well as Celebrate tlJS return of her husband,
Isabella put on her wedding dress, end seating
herself by an open casement that overlooked
the Alvar gardens, she watched for his com
ing; bnt whilst her eyes were vainly fixed up
on tbo path by which sho expected jiim to ap
pear, a hand was laid on her shoulder, and,
turning round, she beheld Vesale standing by
her side.
'I have ordered the supper to be laid in my
study,’ said be; and taking her by tbe hand he
led her away to the room in question, dismiss
ed the attendant, and closed the door. Every
thing wore a festive air, yet the repast was
cheerless. Perceiving that she had lasted
nothing, Vesale poured a few drops from a
vial of elixir in a cup of Malaga wine, and pre
sented it to her.
'Drink this,’ said he, ‘it is a sovereign care
for the complaint you ore suffering from.’
‘Pledge me in the draught,' she returned
filling a fgobiet from the some flask, and
banding it to him, and it will bring a quicker
healing to me. Let ns drink to oar absent
friend, Andre.’
Vesak) accepted tbe offering, and they emp*
tied their gobblcts together.
‘Talking of friends,’ said he, and suddenly
fixing his eye npon her, ‘yon have not Bpoken
to me of Dod Alva de Solis. Are all the bopss
of hearing from him relinquished! He was a
braggart and a libertine, and boasted that no
woman every resisted his seductions, thntno
husband ever suspected the injury bo was pre
paring for him.'
Then grasping his wife by tbe bond, ho led
her np to a door at the further end of the
room, and throwing it wide open, revealed to
to her view a skeleton, suspended within, hold*
ing in one of bis bony hands one of her cm*
■broidered glove?.
‘Behold,’ he said, pointing to the ghastly
spectacle, ‘the gallant and beautiful Don Alva
de Solis, the object of yonr guilty love—con
template him well, if the sight can rendor your
moments happier, for you oro ora about to die,
too—tho wiuc I have givoo yon was poison*
ed?’
When the last dreadful sentence, and its
more dreadfal illustration burst upon her af-
frightened senses, she became paralyzed with
excess of emotion, the steam that, had arisen to
her throat, died there in strangling murmur,
and sinking, foil back os one dead upon the
arms of Vesale.
She was not dead, however; be hod not poi
soned her; that crime he had hesitated to com*
mit, yet, he was none the leas her murderer.—
Uouvulsion followed convulsion, and at last
she died; and in the saprems moment, the hour
that preceded death, her hnsband, who had
never quitted her, behold those phenomena
.which sometimes attend the dying. Awaken
ing from a torbid slumbering consciousness
and mouiory returned at once, and with them
a calm and courage she bad never possessed in
her life.
‘Andre,’ said she, fixing her eyes npon her
hnsband, ‘I am dying by your hand, yet I
innocent; I never wrongfad yon by thought or
deed; Don Alva pnrsaed me witli his love and
threats, bnt I repulsed him. I never loved bat
yon. 1 feared and honored you as maob as I
loved. But I dared not tell yon his pursuits
Oh, Andre, believe my words, the dying deal
not in falsehoods! Should I thus be calm
ware I gniltyt’
Vesak) sinkiog npon his knees, solemnly
protested his faith in tbe innocence of his wife,
and, and, with choking sobs, adjured her to
believe that be only feigned to give her poi
soo, that be oould not nervo his hand to take
away her life; boe tbe terror of death itself
was npon her! And while bo yet spoke Isa
beila murmured—
‘Thanks be to Heaven for ihisl' and draw
ing bis hand t owards here, laid it on ber heart,
and as she did so it cea sed to beat.
