hail. BY LOGHRANSt DQWSINO & CC NEW SERIES, VOL. 1- EKKUK CEASES TO BE BANliEKOIlS, WHEN REASON IS I,EFT Eh ATLANTA, GA„ WEDNESDAY M< THE DAILY EXAMINER. ATLANTA, AUGUST 6, 1857 . FOB THE LADIES. For the lovers or taste and ek^aoce in their boadoir, we extract the following from the Life of the Donates* of Blesiiagton: *' At Mountjo; Forest she found her private sitting room hung with crimson silk velvet, trimmed with gold. At their hotel in Paris tue reception rooms were fitted up with crim- son satin and gold. Gold and marble and mir rors abounded everywhere. But her ladyship’s bed room and dressing room was a surprise of splendor, prepared for her by the gallant hus band (to use her own wordl}*. The bed was ailvered in place of gilt and rested on the back of two large silver swans. It was placed in a recess, lined with fluted white silk, while pale blue silk curtains, lined with white, fell from the frieze, which was supported by columns at each side. A silvered sofa, resting on a velvet carpet of pale blue, rich coders for jewels, and India shawls, a silver lamp, and all the orna ments silvered, complete the {Ticture. The dressing room had hangings of blue silk, cov ered with lace, and the furniture was all silver ed like the bed. “ The bath room also, with its draperies of white lace, its marble floor, painted ceiliug, ala baster lamp, in the form of a lotus, is a pretty picture to contemplate.” So much for the delicate attention of a hus band. A man may be the architect of his own fora tune, bat mach depends upon bis wife’s infius ’ t nco, both spoken and acted. A friend re marked : “ I was in an office to day where, to my cer tain knowledge, the gentleman had not a dol lar ; he had jest told mo so in fact, and was willing to pay a ruinous percentage for money. Presently, in came his wife, dressed for shop ping ; three flounces that wide on her silk dress, an elegant bonnet and embroideries to match. Well, it did not look exactly right.’ “ Oh,” urged a lady, “ perhaps she has been presented with these things by some rich ancle or her father." " If ehe had been it would be better to keep them in a closet until her husband's business prospects improved and his credit was better; it looked badly.” MurmuriDgs and discontent after this fashion are equally a check on the exertions of man : “ It’s certainly very strange, Mr. Dorone | Other people maim money; other people's wives ore not pinched at overy point of expense after this fashion. Kvery man ought to bo able to support his family io comfort; I’m sure I don't see why you can’t. Seems to me everything you take hold of fails in your hands.” What man is there who could go cheerfully to business after such a cold bath of a morn ing ; it is the wrong way to stimulate (lagging energies. A Sad Weodinu.—After publishing the marriage of Mr. Adam Tate, of Chicago, to M ias Jane Pettigrew, late of Scotland, the Chicago Tribune adds: — “ There is a hit of romance, sad enough in its character, connected witli this announce ment, which the parties will forgive us for relating Six young Scotchmen of this city, worthy men all, wtio had left their plight ed faith and lassies behind them when they sought contentment and fortune on our shores, united for the purpose of sending for those to whom their troth was plighted. They were to, and did, come out together. For mutual protection and society they took pas sage in the same vessel. The perilous ocean voyage was made without accident, and the party—a merry and happy party—arrived safely at Quebec where they took passage on the Montreal. Our readers know and have lamented the fate that overtook tha ill-fated steamer and her hundreds of pas- engers. When she burned, of the six trust ing and generous girls, Miss Pettigrew was the only one saved. Her five companions found cither fiery or watery graves. Miss P. was rescuod, she knows not how or by whom. Taken up l'or drowned, the struggle between life and death was long and doubt ful, but at last decided in the former. The kind hearted at Montreal learned her history and admired her modest worth. By them, <(br she had lost every thing hut herself, her immediate necessities were supplied, and in a few days, with their blessing and prayers, shu continued her journey hither. A few of the fivo young men, who, besides tho now happy husband, had precious freight on that steamer, attended the wedding on Tuesday last. How sad that festive gathering was— how the shadow of the fearful past dimmed the brightnesaof the present, who, that has ’«ot tell the destroyer’s touch, can tell V’ 20 Just Received, BOX EH of beat 8lar Candles, to sell cents per ft, by the Box. 6dwtf W.
