DOWHI.IG, S L 111 YEW SERIES, VOL. !• ATLANTA, GA., WEDNESDAY MORNING. AUGUST 19.1857. NIMBER & julutiln Haai tMBlwr. A OMBlBe Surprise Party. Th« Cincinnati Gazette relates the follow. lDg: One of our wealthy citizens, residing on Broadway, la known to have numerous ecccn- tricltia , the most familiar of which, from a recent evebt, In his antipathy to all assemblies, particularly is bis own house. Several fair relatives, composing part of his own house hold, had used all their eloquence to obtain his permission to a party, just one; but the old gentleman was obdurate He won d take the girls to Europe, or Saratoga , or Newport, or Nahant, get them new sets of jewelry—any thing but that. The young ladies almost de spaired; but Qunally bethought them of obtain ing by stratagem what they couM not p- ocuro by permission, for their hearts were fixed upon a party, and a party they must have. The old gentleman was in the habit of re tiring very early and sleeping very soundly, and the girls determined to send oat invitations without bis knowledge; believing that none of the guests would arrive uutil the venerable re lative was in the embrace of Sornnua. Extensive prepirations were the result—an effort was made to give one of the most reciter- che parties of the Heason. The beautiful and the brilliant, the gay and fashionable, the wit ty and elegant were ‘bidden to the feast'— They came. 1 be Insurious drawing rooms were splendid with gas light and diamond., loveliness and gallantry. The uir was rich with perfumes of Paris and Bowers and the most cultivated and melodious voices chatted and gossiped; and hundreds of fairy feet swept through the dance; and the swell of music wus upon the evening uir; when of a sudden a dreadful apparation startled the 'merrie com pany’ as If it had been the hideous Red Death of Poe. The laugh and love«tone were bushed; blood snfiused the cheeks and nude necks of the las dies; the dance stood still; the instruments for got their airs and died in sudden sileoce.— What was that horrid shape—the ladies point ed their white fingers and gazed wildly at the door. Was there another ghost like that in ‘Don Giovanni;’ or was it a sleeted form from a gaping grave? By degrees the vision gathered shape, and looked as a thing of earth. The figure was that of the ‘bead of the family,’ with no su perfluous clothing upon his limbs unless a sin gle garment could be so considered, standing there cane in hand and wrath upon bis brow. He advanced into tho drawing room and be gan swearing like a Templar, and shook his cane above bis head as if he would annihilate somebody. His model artist costume seemed to strike the fair guests with horror; they cov ered their faces ood screamed. Old gedt swore the louder, and moving further into the apart ments, a general stampede took place. Otto mans and chairs were overturned, and in twen. ty seconds the late crowded rooms were de serted. Carriage after carriage rolled away in rapid succession, and the house was soon darkened uud, to all appearances, deserted. A Newspaper Office Attacked and a Man Shot bp the Editor.— We learn from a gentle man ol Osalooka that at 12 o'clock on election night, August 3d, a lamentable affair occurred in that city. The particulars of the cose, as gathered from an eye witness, are as follows: The editor of the Herald, Mr. J. M. Brown, with Mr. D. W. Rice.wasaittiDg at the win dow of Mr. 8. A. Rice’s office, which is iD the second story, and in the same building, and just across the hall from the editorial room of the Herald. The moon was shining brightly, and there was no light in Mr. Rice's office.— At this time Mr. Bowen, who has kept a sa loon iu the city tor the last twelve months, came along, and with a number of others stop ped on the steps beneath the window where Brown and Rice were sittiug. Some one in the crowd said to Mr. Bowen t’ at Mr. Brown vras in the window above,— At this Mr. Bowen commenced cursing Mr. Brown, swearing if he came down he wou'd ‘cut out his heart,’ 'take bis life's blood,' ‘stamp him into the earth,' and other threats of violence, made with most fearful aud bitter profanity. To all these threats Mr. Brown made no reply. Bowea, getting more exas perated, said, '1 will bead a mob to clear out the Herald office,' and rushed up the stairs, followed by one or two other* Mr. Brown drew a revolver, and as Bowen was trying to force open the door, fired, the ball s viking the casing at tbe side of door. Brown then said to bin to try the door again at his peril. Brown fired a second time, tbe ball posing through a panel of the door, striking Bowea in the breast and lodging in the right lung. Bowen made his wsy downstairs, sank upon the pavement, and in about twenty minutes wss a corpse.— Burlington (Anea] Hauikrye, August 6. T. let ter of the I3tli ult., furnishes the follow ing : A‘ very novel incident has occurred to-day. This morning Richard Reslf, of your city, but formerly from England who has been an occasional correspondent for Eastern papers ) called upon G. W. Brown, of the Herald, and demanded a retraction of his wholesale charges upon letter writers in Lawrence.— Brown did not retract' Realf sent him a i.iallenge, and it was accepted under 'he strictest pledge of secrecy. Brown chose for tbo weapons, cowhides, the place he wanted should be one of his office rooms- Realf accepted the woapons hut not tho terms. Their seconds havo boon secretly arranging the affair nearly all day, and just before sunset Brown was seen crossing the river into the timber opposite, and Realfbut 1 a short distance behind. Horo their sec-1 onds found another great difficulty. They i were both naked to their waists, when I Brown insisted that Realf should not strike his head nor below his waist, but Realf re- fused any such condition, saying ho would i strike wherever he could. Further details, | I will omit, only they were unable to agree j about the manner and did not fight, but the | matter is not settled, and Realf is intending ! to have either more 1 fun or feathers, to- , morrow.' ” A New Remedy.—The Cinciuuatti Com- | mercial says: A German who resides in Mill Creek Township, while recently suffer ing Iroma pulmonary attack, sent for a phy sician, who resides on College Hill. In a short time the doctor called on him, prescribed two b ttle3 of cod liver oil, and receiving his fee of eight dollars, was told by the German, who disliked the size of the bill, that be need not come again. Tho German, who, by the I by, hod not heard the doctor’s prescription j very well, supposed ho could get the oil and j treat himself. The doctor buw no more of his patient for sometime; but one day, ri ding past the residence of the German, he was pleased to see him ont in the garden digging lustily.—The case seemed such a proof of the virtues of cod liver o'l that ho stopped to make more particular inquiries about it. “You seem to be gettiDg very well,' - said he addressing the German. ‘•Yaw, I Uh well,” responded the fornt-r aick man. “You took as much as I told you ?" queried tbe doctor- “Oh, yaw, I have used more aa four gal Ions of the dog liver oil." “The what?" said the astonished doctor. “De dog liver oil dit you say I shall take. I have killed most every fat little dog I could catch, and de dog liver oil havo cure. It is great medicinc.dat dog liver oil." The doctor bad nothing to say, but rode quick away, and noticed in his memorandum bork that consumption might be as readily I cured with dog liver as cod liver oil. ■■ - —n.
