Capability of the NegroGerrct Smith, of New York, made the experiment of giving land to negroes. The following is a part of his confession of the result. It is of a char acter with every experiment of the kind on record, with the exception, that as Mr. Smith had bis pick out of the very best of the free negroes of the North, the proportion ol ott to the 1000 is larger tknn would be expected under ordinary circumstances: “ 1 confess that my expectations from the measure have not been fully realized. Of the 3000 colored meu to whom I gave land, prob ably less than 50 have taken aud continue to hold possession of their grants. What is worse half of the 3000, as I judge, have either sold their land, or been so careless as to allow it to be sold for taxes. “I referred to tho character of the colored people. It is improving, but still far from what it should be. Among them are intelli gent and noble men and women, Imt the mass are ignorant and thriftless. “You deal but justly with them, when you declaro that their own bad influence goes fur ther than the acts of the worst shtvchotdcn? ttr uphold slavery. “i’apa, have guns got legs t " •‘No.” “ Llow do they kick, then V ” “ With their breeches, my son. me A hoarding house keeper in Baltimore advertises to “furnish gentlemen with pleasant and comfortable rooms, also one or two gentle* men with wives.” tejy“ A large contract has been made for lioar, deliverable al Louisville, next March, at four dollars aud a half per barrel. New Hour sells there uow at five dollars. This is the best 1 ‘ news of the day.' The importations into New York are enormous. For the month of J uly they ex ceed the amount of any previous mouth, and are# 10,000,000 greater than for last July,— The total is 835,800,300. « » » «> • — Kjy- The Very Kev.
