Dreadftil Accident — Thirteen Men, Women and Children Drowned. A oollinoo took place at two o'clock, oa Saturday tnoraiug, between the steamer Me tropolis, Captain Crown, of the Fall Rirer Line, and the propeller J. N. Harris, Captain Smith, ou her way from New York to New London, Connecticut, which resulted in a sad loss cf life. The New York Express, of Sa turday afternoon, has the following account of the disaster: When just off Now Haven, about two o’clock, this A. M., a vessel with oue light wua observed ahead, and under sails, crossing the steamer's bow. The engines of the Metropolis were imme diately stopped, bat before they could be re* versed, and the vessel baoked, she struck the other steamer in the port side, just forward of the cabin; the force of this being such as the stronger of thetwo, the heavy part of the vessel going down immediately, and the lighter por- t ions of the wreck floating oil'. Afterwards (I diately went into hysteric*; upon recovering quote from the Court organ) ‘entertains a from which she seemed t lo have lost all sense and realization of tho deatli of her husband— her senses seemed to be gone, and no recollec tion of the death sc:med to remain. Ten men of the ill-fated vessel were saved— five passengers, the captain, two engineers, and two of t he deck bands, ns follows: Leonard Id mall, captain; Geo. W. Thompsou, 1st engi neer; Nail Ward, fid engineer; Wm. Graves and Jerry Flanagan, deck hands. Passengers —Daniel Ayres, Supposed of Brooklyn; W. W. Orr, 8. A. Newman, A. N. Smith, of Brooklyn; and J. C’nhil. Oapt. Smith, when taken out ot the wuter, immediately insisted on joining iu the endeav or to resene any others who might be floating on the pieces of the wreck, and continued with others in the search all night. But the abovo are all, out of twenty live sonls ou board that were saved. From the saved it wus ascertained that the ill-fated vessel was the propeller J. N. Harris. 8he left this city about live o'clock yesterday for New London, having a heavy cargo, pro visions, &c., for two vessels lying at New Lon don, besides fifteen passengers—making, with eleven hands on board, twenty six persons in all. Tbe following persons were on honid, and are undoubtedly lost; Stephen Prentiss, first mate; Mary Withers, chamber maid; Ann WilHs,cook. Of passengers. Miss Gordon, daughter of Geo. Gordon, of this city: Mrs. Smith and child, (wife and child of Mr. A W Smith, of Brooklyn;) John Smith, aged nine years; Elizs'Smith, aged seven years; Mary Smith, aged five years. Tbe three last were children of the Captain (Smith.) Two of the passengers, a gentleman ami his wife, and four of the crew, who were lost, are not named. Further Particulars. Those who were lost on tbe propeller were mostly in tho cabip, and could not get out.— One of the rescued passeugers says lie wus there , and when the crash was heard and felt, be sprang for the door, but found it jammed, and could not open it. He sueeeded, however is getting out of a window. Mr. J.T. Hubbard, of No. 13 Wall struct, conversing upon the aocident, states that a person came iDto the saloou-and remarked that the Metropolis was Bcriously injureJ, upon which Mr. Tappan started and fell instantly dead. His wife was seized with convulsions and remained insensible wheu the boat arrived tide morning. A passenger on the propeller, we ars told, too, made desperate efforts to save his wife and child by drawing them through ihe window, but so rapidly did the boat sink that they wi re violently torn from his grasp. A wonjau was seen struggling iu the water, supporting her infant child in her arms—a rope was thrown to her, which fell within her reach and which she might have *cizcd and sated herself by relinguishing her hold upon her child. Hhe looked up,saw those who would have given almost their own hold upon life to save hers, then pressed her child closer to her breast and sank forever. Tbe steamer lay by the spot where the ac cident occurred, steaming slowly around till after day light, throwing out life preservers and sending boats to cruise around to render guidance, if possible, to any odc that might by chance be found alloat upon spars or life- preservers from the wreck. The night was clear, and a beautiful moon, light rested upon tbe Sound, revealing the Struggles of the lost, und all the heart rending sosoe attending such u catastrophe, in moat appaling colors. gf£,The Louisville Journal gives .1.
