Saved III* Baron. Action for work and labor donn in cutting a ditch on defendant’s land. Pica, payment and set off in bacon and corn nionl. Plaintiff's son on the stand. Recollects the ditching perfectly, but seems to forget all about the bacon. •You say your daddy did all this ditching 1 l)o you know what he got in pay for it !’ in' quired Co!. (With considerable excitement ami in tones of thunder.) ‘Answer the question sir, and no more of this (Tilling with your oath. Did your dad dy, or did he not, get corn and bacon from tbo defendant for ditching 1’ ‘Well, now ho inought ; it don’t eerur adzaotly, you know.’ Here his honor interferes, and with astern, unjudicial frown, addresses witness thus : ‘Witness, you must answer tile question, or the Court will be compelled to deal with you. Can’t you say yes or no V ‘I recken.’ Well, then answer yes or no. The postage betweeu the United Stutes and Hamburg, under the arrangement, is ten cents the single letter of half an ounce iu weight or under, prepayment optional, and two cents on newspapers, prepayment required.— The rates to all countries and places beyond Hamburg, whether upon letters or printed matter, are identically the Burne in all respects as the rates charged via Bremen, under the United States and Bremen postal convention. New York, Aug, 18. President Litchfield, of the Michigan Southern railroad has resigned, and the stock has declined Irotn thirty two to twenty five. Tho market was excited, and one iiundred thousand bags had been taken in a few days for tbo Euro pean market, and 37,000 bags for the U, States, Flour is improving m price. Phu.adei.phu, Aug. la. An unknown girl, about twenty years ot age, threw herself on the track of the Ger mantown railroad, in advance of tho morn ing train and was torn to pieces. She step ped off the track as the train approached and then on again when it was to near for a stoppage of the train. It was an evident eastTCT suicide. New York, Aug. 18.
